William being born 21 Nov 1921 in Decatur. I don't know who your ATWOOD grandparents were, but would be happy to help you. The spelling of the Atwood name does not have a pattern. In fact there are families where one child, spells it with 2 T's and another will spell with 1 T. Henry Wood of Marlborough, Massachusetts had children go by ATWOOD, ATTWOOD and WOOD... so no rhyme or reason. Tracing you tree can be fun and frustrating. First start with your parents BIRTH and MARRIAGE RECORDS, and trace back from there.
