    3. Atwood Ancestors v12 #2a (1994) by Claudette Maerz - --------------------------------------------- Contents History of the Atwood Family (#2a) Hamstead County New Hampshire (#2b) Queries (#2c) - -------------------------------------------- History of the Atwood Family Introduction by Julian Atwood, DDiv [This is a very long article, introduced by Dr Julian Atwood, and written by Floden Parks Troutman. She sites many of the books and articles previously mentioned in this publication. She reports of a visit to Sanderstead in 1947. She then goes on to state her family tree, which appears to be purely conjecture. I'll summarize the FACTS, anyone interested in more should contact me.. [email protected]] "During World War II, the large house which has stood for centuries was used as barracks for soldiers. One night fire was discovered so far advanced, the inside of the large three story mansion was literally burned out, leaving only outside walls and part of the inside walls and stair cases...... In a very prominent place on a tablet in the wall isa memorial to King Atwood, pastor in 1630.... When I was there the sexton showed me where the tomb had been moved several feet away to make room for a new addition to the building. He explained that the floor of the building would extend out over all the graound in which the dead were, so that upon its completion they would be beneath the floor. The plan will be to transfer the inscriptions now on the tobm to marble or stone slabs placed in the floor of the new addition directily over the graves of those who are buried there. The old tomb which has been there for centuries will probably remain where it is now placed, near the wallof the new addition." The Illinois Atwoods "Edwin Y Atwood was born in Virginia in 1795, and moved to Tennesseein 1819, and settled in Wilson County where he bought 100 acres of land, the deed being conveyed by one James Witherspoon. His Will was probated in 1846. One third of the estate was given to his wife Sarah. The balance was divided among his children equally. Their names were Nancy Courtney, Sarah Whitlock, Edwin Atwood, Moses Atwood, (my grandfather- Julian's) Newton Atwood and Jane Henderson. HERE AGAIN WE IDENTIFY OUR LINE WITH THE HARMAN LINE BY THIS NAME MOSES ATWOOD, GRANDFATHER OF MANY OF THE ATWOODS IN ILLINOIS. BY THE SAME TOKEN WE ESTABLISH THE HARMAN LINE IN VIRGINIA."
