The father of Mehitable Atwood was cousin to Moses Atwood, who was married to Mary Tenney, who were the parents of Mrs Newell (see Atwood sketch)" Atwood Mr Charles Atwood, distinguished scholar and prominent lawyer, who died in Boston in 1887, made an extensive research of the Atwood family in England and America. From his MS, in the possession of Mrs George W Warren, of Somerville, Mass, a niece of Mr Atwood, we read: "The name of Atwood originated in Coulsdon, a parish in Surrey county, twelve miles south of London, and adjoining Croydon and Sanderstead. As early as 1313 tenants of estates of the Abbey of Cherster were Peter, John, and Geoffrey Atte-Wodee, named from their residence "at the wood". This estate had 150 acres of land, and had been in the family 150 years. The first Atwood buried in the church in the village of Sanderstead was in 1520 AD.
