I ran across this on the SPENNYMOOR UNITED A.F.C. Web Site http://www.spennymoorunited.fsnet.co.uk/crest.htm The crest emblazoned on the shirts and blazers of the players and club officials, is also the coat of arms granted to the town in 1952. The significance of the coat of arms may have little interest to the football supporter but will give an insight into the history of the town and the surrounding area. The coat of arms bears the inscription " Spe Nemo Ruet" which apart from having a striking similarity to the name Spennymoor, means, "With hope no one shall fail." On the arms, in the first and fourth quarters, appears a lion rampant on red ground set about a cross in the arms of the Attwood family. The gold fleur-de-lys in the second and third quarters is taken from the arms of the Coulson family. These quarters surround the gold cross from the arms of Durham County, with the addition of ten drops of blood, representing the combat at Butchers Race, which played a great part in the Battle of Neville's Cross.
