Atwood Ancestors Vol VII No 1c Published by Claudette (Atwood) Maerz, Spring 1989 TRIP TO BROOMFIELD [ENGLAND] Submitted by Dr. Charles Attwood, 621 N Ave K, Crowley LA 70526 [NOTE: These trip notes were so interesting I decided to transcribe them in full. /rea] In March 1988, Jo Ann and I went to London. While there we wanted to visit Broomfield in Essex, where records indicated that Thomas Atwood was born. He was the first emigrant to the United States in my direct lineage. His birthdate was 1610 and the year of his arrival in Plymouth was 1650. We couldn't find the city of Broomfield on any map of the county of Essex. No one we talked to had ever heard of it. As a last resort we planned a train trip across Essex to the city of Cholchester located near the coast. When we reached the station of Chelmsford, a town about 25 miles from London, there was a delay in the schedule, because of work on the tracks ahead. We sat in the train, waiting, when finally a lady boarded the train and sat across from us. She overheard us talking about our search for Broomfield and said "Broomfield is right here. It's now a small suburb of Chelmsford." We thanked her and got off the train, taking a taxi to the little suburban cillage of Broomfield where the center of things seemed to be old St. Mary's Church built in the 11th century. The old stone church was surrounded by great oak trees and the grounds were covered with ancient gravesites. It was getting dark and we couldn't find any Atwood sites, but didn't have time to look at many of them. Photographs were taken of the Church and grounds. We next went to the Chelmsford Public Library where some booklets were found on the ancient history of Bloomfield. In one of the booklets, Broomfield 1974, the following was found: January 30th 1649, "after King Charles I was executed at Whitehall, his librarian, Patrick Young, retired to the obscurity of the parsonage at Broomfield. His daughter Elizabeth had married John ATTWOOD, Esq., and it was at his son-in-law's house that he spend [sic] the last three years of his life. The Attwood's house stood on mound, clearly visible. It was a substantial house." We have no way of knowing if John Attwood was the brother of our own Thomas who left for Plymouth in 1650, but there was probably very few people of this name in the small village of Broomfield at that time. Thomas' father's name was also Thomas. If so, since Thomas had served under Oliver Cromwell (who had ordered King Charles I executed, it could have been uncomfortable for Thomas to remain in Broomsfield. He was 40 years old when he left for America in 1650. We called the current paster of St. Mary's Church who told us that all church records for that period were now at the Essex Record Office. We did not have time on this trip to go there. He gave me a name of a local citizen, a Mr. Ken Searles, who does a lot of work on genealogy as a sort of hobby. His address is 19 Glebe Crescent, Broomfield 004770. The St. Mary's pastor is Rev. A. D. Ritson, of Broomsfield (telephone number is 0245440318). Another name that may be helpful is Mr. W.H.D. Clark, 33 Mill Lane, Broomfield. We located a Mormon Church in Chelmsford. We called from London and left some of the information we were interested in. We have made no further contact, but plan to in the near future. TRIP TO GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA Submitted by Dr. Charles Attwood, 621 N Ave K, Crowley LA 70526 On December 28th, 1988, Jo Ann and I flew to Greenville in search of more information about my Great, Great, Great Grandfather, Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood. I had been under the impression that he was the first Atwood to leave the vicinity of Woodbury, Conn. He attended Yale and there met John Calhoun who convinced him to settle in South Carolina. This is the same John Calhoun who later became vice president of the United States. They apparently remained friends. My first stop and site of most of my Greenville visit was the Greenville County Main Library, a wonderful place with an entire area, the South Carolina Room, devoted to local history. This is presided over by Mrs. Penny Forester, a genealogist. She helped me do the census searches with the microfilm. We found Dr. Curtis Atwood in the 1850 census. We also found him as one of the founders of the Buncombe Street Methodist Church. The church still exists and is a massive structure. According to the diary of Mr. Robert McKAy (who married Dr. Attwood's daughter, Octavia) the Sunday School was organized in 1836. Dr. Attwood was listed as one of the Sunday School Managers. One of the teachers was Martha Attwood, another daughter of Dr. Attwood. Judith Attwood, his wife, was listed as belonging to "Class 1". Nancy Attwood was listed as belonging to "Class 2". This was apparently another daughter of Dr. Attwood. Martha was married on Nov 16th 1838 to Mr. James D. Henderson of Newberry District (by Rev. Mr. Crowell). I later found a note that Martha Henderson, wife of James Henderson and daughter of Dr. CB Atwood, died after a short illness, leaving two small children, one of which was only 6 months old. She was 26 years old when she died. I noted in the 1850 census that the household of dr. Curtis Burke Attwood in Greenville contained himself, aged 67, his wife Judith, aged 60, and a little girl by the name of Martha Henderson, his granddaughter. His real estate owned at that time was valued in this census at $5000.00. Married on 28 March, 1845 in Greenville: Miss Octavia Virginia, daughter of Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood, to Robert McKay, Esq. Some land transactions were found indicating that he probably donated the land for the Buncombe Avenue Methodist Church. Several land transactions were found on Buncombe Road. Some of the records [I] already had showed that Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood [was] buried at Springwood Cemetery in Greenville. I found this cemetery a few blocks from the library in the center of the downtown area. It was a giant cemetery and the records of gravesites of people buried that long ago had been destroyed by fire in the 1950s. I started looking at the oldest gravesites near the entrance. I found nothing for nearly an hour. Then I caught the name "Octavia" boldly engraved across the bottom of a gravestone about 50 feet from where I was looking, a site just adjacent to the busy downtown street. As I approached it, I could easily read the inscription on the stone: "Octavia Attwood McKay, buried next to her mother." The next gravesite was a bricksided rectangular structure with a large slab stone covering it: Judith Attwood. Next to it on the far right facing the road was another gravesite similar in size and made of brick and stone slab cover. Its slab top was engraved: Sacred to the Memory of Curtis Burke Attwood Born 10th April 1783 In Woodbury, Connecticut And Died 28 Oct 1851 Lived 71 Years, 6 Months, and 13 Days Leaving A Wife and Four Children And Thirteen Grandchildren The Deceased Was a Practicing Physician for Many Years In Newberry District And In All The Relations of Life Respected and Esteemed By All Who Knew Him I believe the reason that few records exsited in Greenville of the early life of Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood is indicated on the stone. He spent those early years in Newberry. This is probably why a listing of all practicing physicians in Greenville during this time contained no listing of Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood. He had apparently retired to Greenville, and was no longer a practicing physician. This lettering was in good condition and covered by deep layers of green moss.I could read it only after scrubbing off the moss with an old pair of pants found nearby. I could not get the inscriptions cleared very well on the graves of Judith and Octavia. I hadn't noticed it at first, but there were two small children's graves beside Octavia's grave. These were on the extreme right of the family plot facing the street. Across a small sidewalk was a tomb engraved with the name of McKAy containing about 7 or 8 spaces. The names of these were not recorded by me on this visit, but certainly belonged to Octavia's husband and in-laws. Someone at the Library told me there was a street downtown in Greenville named after Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood. I found Atwood Street just a few blocks away from the cemetery. It seemed to be several blocks long, and according to Mrs. Forester (at the library) it was the old street leading up to the Attwood home. Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood apparently added the extra "T" to the name when he came to South Carolina. I find it spelled both with one and two T's in most records. On the gravestones it appears with two "T"s. All the records of his ancestors in Connecticut, including Thomas from Broomfield , England used one "T". For more information on Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood I will look to Newberry SC where he must have lived and practiced. His son Rocius lived here before he moved to Arkansas shortly after the Civil War. If anyone has further information , or is interested, please contact me. ---------- LETTERS From: Sandra Jerome Atwood, 2205 Country Club Drive, La Place LA 70068 Seeking more information on: 1 Austin L.
