They were living in Rowley in 1752 (3 children, not transcribed /rea) These names are common to Philip Atwood line; the name Boynton occurs later among Atwoods of this line, but, location Rowley was perhaps nearer Anthony, son of Thomas of Ipswich.) ----- Thomas Atwood (Stephen 2, Stephen 1) 3 Thomas Atwood of Mansfield CT was son of Stephen 2 and Apphia (Bangs, Knowles) and is named in the will of Stephen, probated at Barnstable Mass. He removed to Mansfield after 1735. For instance, an Elijah Atwood married 2 Sep 1790, (church record is August without day of month) to Rebecca Prince, at Killingly CT and, he followed other sons of Francis 4 Atwood to Shoreham VT. This Elijah, son of Thomas was evidently not old enough to be him of Killingly, but the latter is not certainly placed; has been confused with an Elisha, of the Thomas of Essex line, who married Mary Skilton. (See Skilton book.) ----- Chester, Vermont Census of 1790 shows these Atwood families in Chester, VT: William Atwood with 2 male over 16 one under 16 and three females Anthony Atwood with 1 male over 16 and one female Oliver Atwood with 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16 and 2 females Jeremiah Atwood with 1 male over 16 and 2 females Family record of descendants of Esek Atwood, of Chester, give Oliver and Miram as oldest known generation, their son Jeremiah and his son Esek. My best guess is that these were descendants of Philip Atwood, but there is a possibility that they came from Connecticut, of the Essex Line, and, that there may have been more than one family of the older generation, or, that more than one line is represented here. Vermont Vital Records show this data: Oliver Atwood died in Chester, 3 Mar 1845, at the age of 87. If age is correct, he was born 1757/8. Record names no widow, so probably Miriam was dead. (I recall someone reporting that, between 1775 and 1780 "Mr. Atwood buried a child at Chester, VT"). Jeremiah Atwood died in Chester 26 Feb 1883 aged 86; his age shows he was not the Jeremiah of Census of 1790. Oliver Atwood died in Chester, 6 May 1869, aged 64 years, 2 months and 10 days. Record gives father as Oliver Atwood and mother Mary Ann, which latter may, or may not, be meant for Miriam. Oliver Atwood died in Chester, 13 Jun 1847 aged 52. He is called Oliver 2nd, seeming to show he was son of an Oliver, which leaves a puzzle to solve. These three deaths are given at Chester, without ages: Stephen Atwood, son of Oliver and Miriam, 6 Aug 1788. Susannah Atwood, Feb 1791, dau of Oliver William Atwood d 1 Oct 1796. The latter may have been him of census of 1790 and probably brother of Oliver, whose wife was Miriam. "Eseck" Atwood son of Jeremiah Atwood and Zilpha Willard d 15 Aug 1872 in Brattleboro, VT, age 62 years and 10 months. If this age is correct, he signed two deeds at Chester before he was 21, and this age does not agree with family record, which is doubted because of those deeds. However, it is likely he signed one before he was of age and the other, for same lands, with a little additional, after he was of age. ----- QUERIES ATWOOD * WOODHOUSE * TIMMONS (VA, IN, OH, WI) Henry Woodhouse m Jacqueline Atwood, dau of William Atwood.
