John Atwood, brickmaker, of Medford, and Lydia his wife, sell house and lot, in Charlestown, to William Heathers, 1731 Joseph Atwood, mariner, of Charlestown, bought house and land of Frothingham, in Charlestown, 1741. He may have been child brought by Ann 1715, but ancestry is unknown. Elijah Atwood, b 1724 d 1806, of East Haddam CT, had brother Andrew and sisters Elizabeth, Hannah, and a Mrs, Comstock, but has not been placed as to ancestry. Elizabeth Atwood was admitted to church, Charlestown, MA 1633 Francis Atwood, Havehill MA 1691 had daughter Hannah baptised George Atwood was an extensive landowner in Coleton Co. SC after 1701 Harman Atwood b 1613 d 1653 in Boston 1642; son of John, son of Nicholas of Sanderstead, Co., Surrey, Eng. In Atwood Family 1888; Ye Atte Wode Annals, 1928; and separately, as Harman Atwood, 1930; last two by author of this book on Philip Atwood Henry Wood was of Plymouth, 1641; had sons named Wood and others named Atwood, probably a brother of Harman; in Ye Atte Wode Annals, 1928; fairly complete geneaology of Henry Wood family in preparation, to be published by Atwood publishing Co., Sisseton, So. Dakota. Isaac Atwood, Roxbury MA, 1640, buried son John. John Wood, alias atwood, baptized as Johanem, 1582, son of Nicholas of Sanderstead, and father of Harman, John, Stephen, Henry and William. Probably of Saugus (Lynn) MA, 1628-9, but of London 1630-31; death not found. Mr. John Atwood b 1576 d 1644, baptised Johanies of Nicholas of Sanderstead, was of Plymouth by 1636; no descendants. John Atwood b 1614 d 1675, son of John, son of Nicholas was of Plymouth 1641; see Ye Atte Wode Annals, 1928; Stephen Atwood d 1693 was of Plymouth 1641; son of John, son of Nicholas; see Ye Atte Wode Annals, 1928, and Author has much more material not yet published. Thomas Atwood 1650, witness, Middlesex Co MA, not certainly identified Thomas and Mary Atwood had son John baptized, Boston 1686 not identified Thomas Atwood, Gent. sailed Bristol, Eng. to Boston 1714, and next year came Ann Atwood, with child; child may have been Edward of Middleboro, but really not identified. Thomas Atwood, from Barbadoes [sic], probate in Boston 1695; no children Thomas Atwood b 1610 d 1682, from Co. Essex, Eng., was in Hartford CT, 1644; ancestor of most of the Connecticut Atwoods. See Skilton book; and Ye Atte Wode Annals, 1928; Atwoods of Essex line, in preparation by author of Phillip Atwood, etc. Edward Atwood, nephew of next preceding Thomas, was lost at sea, on an Atwood ship from Connecticut; no issue William Atwood, freeman 1650, Charlestown MA; was doubtless the other brother of John Atwood, son of John, son of Nicholas, but left no male descendants, if any. See Shurtleff book which has many Atwoods of the John line. ----- Additions Page 29 gives a Lois Atwood, who doubtless was a sister or cousin of Philip of Nelson Page 9, John Atwood b 1704 d 1745 m Lydia Richardson, and it was she who married John Giles, rather than her daughter Lydia b 1723 who married Jasher Richardson, for latter was born 1724. See Richardson genealogy. Page 12, John Atwood b 1729 d 1814 married Elizabeth Lawrence and her stone at Nelson NH is now so weatherworn as to be illegible. ----- Philip, of Nelson NH Philip and Ruth (Gates) Atwood had these children: 1 Lucy Atwood b 26 Nov 1784 2 Silas Atwood b 23 Nov 1785 3 Ruth Atwood b 16 ??? 1787 4 John Atwood b 23 Aug 1789 5 Rufus Atwood b 24 Sep 1791 6 Hannah Atwood b 3 Apr 1794 7 Salome Atwood b 11 Jun 1797 8 Lois Atwood b 29 Sep 1799 see page 17 ------- Atwoods of Boston Mary Atwood (John, Harman) bapt. 6 Sep 1691, married 3 Dec 1714 to Sampson Jarvis and by 1729 to John Chamberlain; children not traced Her sister Ann Atwood b 19 Jun 1697 married 26 Nov 1730 to "Nath. Hodgdon". Her sister Abigail Atwood b 1699 married 4 Apr 1722 to John Earle; children not traced Joshua Atwood, brother to these, b 10 Aug 1701 d 31 Aug 1770 married 18 Apr 1723, Boston, to Elizabeth Atkins who died 15 Jan 1768, aged 63 and both have stones in Copp's Hill, Boston. Children: 1 Mary Atwood b 26 Dec 1723 m 30 Apr 1747 to Benjamin Varney, Boston 2 Joshua Atwood b 1 Jan 1725. (Some Joshua married in 1752 to Elizabeth Campbell of Bradford.) 3 Elizabeth Atwood b 1727 died 4 John Atwood b 22 Apr 1729; m 29 Sep 1750 to Ruth Morrison 5 Elizabeth Atwood b 21 Aug 1731 m 28 Dec 1764 to Benjamin Varney. (He is on Boston records twice.) 6 Timothy Atwood b 21 Feb 1733 (an unknown Timothy appears at Killingly CT) 7 Richard Atwood b 10 Oct 1736 8 Abigail Atwood b 4 Aug 1743 Practically all other branches of Harman Atwood are known. These are given here that records may be compared for possible conflicts in tracing descendants of Philip Atwood. Another brother, John 3 (John, Harman) was of Groveland, a part of Haverhill, as is Braduord, but his descendants are proven. His nephew, John b 1714 d 1812 (son of James) was of Haverhill where correction of state lines put him in Hampstead NH and descendants are fairly well traced. -----continued at Vol X No 2b
