Nancy Atwood & Uriah Humphries 2 Sep 1811 ----- John Atwood Sr. and wife Sarah (Coleman?) John Atwood, Sr. and wife Sarah (family history says Coleman) came through the state of GA as noted in Passport issued by Gov. of GA Wed, 28 Oct 1801 to pass through the Creek Nation to the western lands for John Atwood and family. John Atwood, Sr. was granted land in what is now Amite Co., MS in 1807. (Amite Co. MS 1699-1890, Vol III, pg 394) and was listed in census for 1810 in Amite Co., MS. In 1820, John Atwood was living in covington Co. MS per 1820 C and tax list of Covington Co., MS He is shown on the tax list of Covington Co MS for 1821 as 1 white poll, 1 slave, tax $.75. In 1822 tax list, John Atwood, Sr. is shown as 0 white poll, 1 slave, and tax $.75. (This would help to establish his birth date, as after 60 no poll was charged.) Prob. born 1761/62. John Atwood Sr. is shown on this tax list through 1829. There is no list available for 1830 but he was listed on census of Covington Co. MS for 1830. In 1831 tax list, his wife, Sarah Atwood, is shown as being taxed for the same property. So John Atwood died between the census of 1830 and the tax time of 1831. Sarah Atwood pays tax on this property through 1834. 1850 Mort. Schedule Miss, by Gillis: ATTWOOD, Sarah, age 80 female, b VA d Sep 1849 Cov. Co. Nor have I been able to learn the parents of his wife Sarah, or where they married. According to family tradition he and his wife are buried in Covington Co. MS at what was Lowe's graveyard.
