Peggy Ashby ashp@chariot.net.au posted on the Attwood List: Hi, I am researching the Ashby family as my gg grandfather was Adam Ashby. His sister married George Attwood and they moved to the USA. A descendant, who I had contact with a few years ago, had a message on one of the boards. This was her message, but I am not sure if her email address is still valid. "Seeking information on Amy Ashby Born 11 Jan 1820 or 1821 in Westerham, Kent, England. Her father was William Ashby she had a brother named Thomas and a sister Lucy. She was married to George Attwood. Migrated to the U.S. and settled in Kansas. Please contact me by e-mail ja291@earthlink.net" Adam Ashby is an enigma. His parents were William and Susannah Ashby nee Latter and the rest of the children were christened in Sussex or Kent (William was a millwright and built or owned mills). Adam was not christened and in the censuses he was never sure of his birth date but it was c. 1804 and he always named Frant, Sussex as his birth place. Whilst looking through the Frant register on the Hugh Wallis's IGI batches, I found the item below and feel Adam may have been cared for by William and Susannah, but be the natural son of Elizabeth Mepham as Adam is an extremely rare Christian name for that era and it seems a big coincidence. "Adam Mepham born to Elizabeth Mepham on 3/4/1803 in Frant Church Register." I found your Attwood Family History on Rootsweb and noticed that you mentioned an Elizabeth Mepham, who was married a year after Adam was born. "John Attwood's father was Samuel Attwood born 1779 Waldron and married Elizabeth Mepham born 1780. They married 1804 at Wadhurst". Wadhurst is the next village to Frant. Incidentally if you type in Sussexweald in Google, there is an enormous amount of information on a lot of the people of the area including Attwoods. Hoping that you can clear things up a bit, Peggy Ashby, Australia
Chris Attwood cattwood53@blueyonder.co.uk wrote on the Attwood List: Sir William Dugdale's "Antiquities of Warwickshire" 1656 lists Members of Parliament for the County of Warwick - named for the 21st Year of the reign of Edward iii (1347/8) one "John de Saundersted" is summoned to attend the Parliament at Westminster from the County of Warwick. Given the well documented link between the Attwoods and Saundersted, particularly at this time, I wonder if this John also used the name Atte Wode and is possibly responsible for the Warwickshire dynasty of the name? Sadly I cant find any other references to a John de Saundersted in WAR. My "One Name Study" proceeds slowly but steadily - I will soon be posting a transcription of Attwood/ Atwoods in the 1841 census on my website and am continuing to enhance (with spouse details, dates, locations etc) the GRO index of Marriages from 1837. I am happy to share any information I have. Please also consider donating your information to my master database and in particular marriage details from 1837. Thank you Juanita. Rule #1.... always check your links. Here is the correct link to the Charles Atwood Tintype Photo: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160275937545 I also 'spoke' with the owner and she seems to think it is Charles Richmond Atwood, born 1804 in Taunton, MA. She has not yet offered her reasons, so BUYER BEWARE ! FYI: The link did not work for me -- said "invalid item." At first, I thought it had either sold or been removed, but I searched using "tintype Atwood" and the item appeared. I hope the family recovers it. Hi Brad, By the looks of the number Obits you have been sending, Atwoods seem to have been dropping like flies! I know that you have the Warwick book, so it won't help if I check there, And, I have no data on these people in my files. But, I thought that you should know that the Kingman family has a VERY good researcher in the Boston area who (as Loring's mother was a Kingman) might have some data on this line. I had (deceased) a distant cousin who's "other" side was Kingman. That's how I know about that site. I'm not home so I don't have the URL at my fingertips, but a search should find the Kingman WebSite. If not, when I'm home later this week I can find the URL for you. I hope that all is well with you. Allen E.
