She formerly resided on Rensselaer Street in Hoosick Falls and was the wife of the late Raymond Atwood who died in 2002. Mary was born on August 1, 1923, in Mechanicville, N.Y., daughter of the late John and Crencenza (Romanelli) Notro. She was educated at schools in Mechanicville and was employed at the Hoosick Falls High School for many years. Mary was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Hoosick Falls. Survivors include her daughter, Mary Lou Goyette of Colonie, N.Y.; her son, Raymond Atwood of Albany; sister, Jennie Lawyer of Mechanicville, N.Y.; also survived by five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by two sisters, Lucy Lembo and Josephine Notro; also three brothers, Dominick, James and John Notro. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, August 8 at 10:00 a.m. from the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street in Hoosick Falls. Burial will follow the Mass in St. Paul's Cemetery in Mechanicville. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the care of the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main Street in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to the through the funeral home.

Atwood, 87, formerly of Old Ferry Road, Haverhill, died Sunday morning, Aug. 2, 2009 at Brooksby Village Peabody. He was born in Methuen, Feb. 10, 1922, son of the late Burton H. and Leona F. (Rolfe) Atwood, and at an early age moved to Haverhill. Earle was educated in the Haverhill Public Schools and was a graduate of Haverhill High School, Class of 1940. He also attended Franklin Institute. During World War II, he was a member of the 1st Headquarters Army Corp. of Engineers, and served as Tech 4th class, in Normandy, Northern France, Central Europe Ardennes and Rhineland and was awarded the European African Medal and the Eastern Theatre Ribbon with five Bronze Stars. Upon returning to Haverhill he worked in the City of Haverhill's Engineers Office as a Draftsman and Surveyor until 1951. Earle then began working for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Highway Engineer until his retirement in 1985. Active in Masonic Lodges, he was a member and Past Master of the Saggahew Lodge, Past High Priest of Pentucket Chapter R.A.M.,Past Illustrious Master of Haverhill Council R&SM Treasurer of Haverhill Commandery KT14 and the Aleppo Temple, Member of M.O.S.E.S, Newburyport 10th Past Master's Association,was a member of AM Vets Lorraine Post 87 of Haverhill and the Riverside Memorial Church. His survivors include his wife, Charlene (Crosby) Atwood of Peabody; daughters, Mrs. Carolyn J. Bramhall of Lady Lake, Fla., Judith L Atwood of Del Rio, Texas, Cynthia G. and her husband Walter Day of Woburn; five grandchildren, Rebecca J. Najjar, Russell G Bramhall, Sarah D. Bramhall, Laurie A. Leftwitch, Suzanne E. Hemann; six great-grandchildren and several cousins. ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill, will be Friday from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Linwood Cemetery. Mr. Bill was a retired farmer, enjoyed hunting, fishing, was a member of the Sinkhole Hunting Club and always look forward to shad season. Many will remember his walks to the store accompanied by his Labrador, Inky, to get the morning paper. He attended the Lake Church and Metter Primitive Baptist Church. He loved and took care of his family, including his parents, brothers and sisters. He was predeceased by his parents; Annie Vadie Hall and Benjamin Turner Atwood Sr. also; 3 Brothers and 1 Sister. Survivors; His wife of 52 years; Versie Glisson Atwood of Metter, Son and Daughter in-law; Denver and Stephanie Atwood, Grandsons; Alex, Stephen and Turner Atwood all of Birmingham AL. Cousin; Clara Bowen of Statesboro. Funeral services will be 11:00 Monday July 20, in the chapel with visitation to begin at 9:30 the morning of the service. Burial will be in the Lake Cemetery. I have no connections to the seller, and offer this for informational purposes only (RBP) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370222098671 Original, not a reprint, 1877, 1st edition Francis Gilbert Attwood, "Manners and Customs of Ye Harvard Students" compilation of sketches 1876 to 1877 from the Harvard Lampoon, the first years of it's existence; fascinating humor- sketches only, no commentary except captions- approx 35 pp, 8" x 11"-boards have some scuffing, fading, soiling; inside cover page is torn off- spine is shot and is in really badly worn; boards are almost torn off, but are barely hanging on; still the pages are well bound and solid; sketches are good quality; interior pages have some discoloration, age yellowing and a few water stains; some very slight edge tears; some creasing in spots, but decent overall ; I'm offering several other similar Harvard items in other auctions.

The News & Observer <www.newsobserver.com> 6 July 2009 Phyllis Ruth Atwood Phyllis Ruth Atwood, 80, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2009, at the Hospice at the Meadowlands, after a short battle with lung cancer. Born February 13, 1929 in Brockton, MA to Joseph Barron and Jennie Schwabski Barron. Phyllis graduated with her BS in Nutrition from the University of Vermont and earned her Masters in Public Health from Tulane University. She worked as a clinical dietician at hospitals in Connecticut and Vermont. She is survived by her daughter LCDR (USNR) Jennifer Bachman and her husband (Glen) and her only grandchild Isabelle. Phyllis was predeceased in death by her husband Phillip and her sister Harriet Isaac. Phyllis moved to Durham from Phoenix, AZ four years ago to be closer to her family and was very active in the Summit Church. While here she forged great friendships and often referred to this period as "the best four years of her life." An avid Bridge player, Phyllis stayed active in her seniors group, traveled, and loved doing water aerobics. A memorial service celebrating her life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at the Summit Church on the corner of Club Blvd. and Carolina Ave. in Durham. The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough for the extraordinary care and compassion shown not only to Phyllis but to her family during this difficult time.

Victoria Times-Colonist <www.timescolonist.com> 14 June 2009 Phyllis (Jessop) Atwood March 16, 1923 - June 5, 2009 Phyllis (Jessop) Atwood passed away peacefully at the Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion in Victoria BC. She was born in North Battleford, Sask. Moved to England in 1936 where she worked and served with the Allied forces as a driver in the motor pool during WWII, returning to Canada in 1947 with her English husband Michael Bruce. During her life she lived in several Canadian and American cities before settling on Saltspring Island in 1975 with her husband Richard Atwood. Their home at Southey Point for twenty five years was a haven of beauty, respite, vitality and stimulating conversation for friends and family. An avid gardener and needle artist her sense of beauty and caring for others made a significant contribution to everyone who knew her. She is survived by her daughter Paddy Bruce, brother Mervyn Jessop, stepsons Duncan and Colby Atwood, four grandchildren and one great grandson. Her brothers Walter and Don Jessop predeceased her. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be sent to the Oak Bay Kiwanis Pavilion, 3034 Cedar Hill Rd. Victoria BC V8T 3J3.

    3. The Daily Sentinel <www.gjsentinel.com> 14 June 2009 Hazel May Brown Atwood June 19, 1917 - June 9, 2009 Hazel May Brown Atwood passed quietly away in Hemet, California on June 9, 2009. She was almost 92. She was born in Canon City, Colorado on June 19th, 1917. As the fourth child in the Brown family of three sisters and one brother, she grew up in Victor, Colorado, the "city of mines" in the Cripple Creek Mining District. She was a member of a pioneer Colorado family. Her maternal grandfather brought his family to the area before it achieved statehood, practicing law and later serving as a state senator from Custer County. Her father, Charles Norman Brown worked in gold mining in various capacities, serving for many years as the stationary engineer on the Vindicator Mine in Victor. Her mother, Lillian McNeeley Brown was a talented amateur musician. Hazel learned to love books from her father, who was an inveterate reader, and she developed a true passion for historical fiction and biography, as well as for classical music and history. She loved flower gardening, and engaging in conversation about politics and world events. In her final years, she enjoyed many peaceful, contemplative hours sitting in the out of doors, and to the end carried herself with great dignity and poise. She graduated from high school in 1935, and in 1940, while attending nursing school, married Richard Johnson Atwood of Watertown, Connecticut. During the war years, while her husband, a veteran of the D-Day invasion on Omaha Beach, was in Europe, she lived and worked in Colorado Springs. After the war, they returned to England, raising three children as her husband continued a career with the Air Force. They enjoyed many years of the good life, travelling in Europe, collecting antiques and becoming true Anglophiles. After retiring, they returned to the East Coast, moving to Newport, Maine where they enjoyed fishing, travel and a group of wonderful friends as members of St. Martin's Episcopal Church in Palmyra. Hazel and Richard moved to Grand Junction in 1997 to be near their daughter. They were married 66 years until his passing in January, 2007. Hazel is survived by her son, Mark B. Atwood and wife, Linda of Nazareth, PA; son, David F. Atwood of Idyllwild, CA and daughter, Cary A. Atwood and husband, Jim Landis of Grand Junction; three grandchildren, Matthew W. Atwood of East Windsor, CT; Todd F. Atwood of Woodland, CA and David F. Atwood Jr. of Santa Clarita, CA, and four great grandchildren. In the last years she very much appreciated the caring companionship of Gloria Clark, Kent Keith and the caring staff of Comfort Care, and Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado.

She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Lee Atwood Smith; grandson, Jeffrey Alan Smith; two great-granddaughters, Ashley and Courtney Smith; many loving nieces, nephews, and friends, as well as her loyal companion, Sophie. Mrs. Atwood was born December 13, 1924 in Rileyville, Va. Mrs. Atwood worked for Liggett and Myers Corporation as an inspector for many years. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Mechanicsville Chapel Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Graveside services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Westhampton Memorial Park. Arlene L Atwood Los Angeles Times <www.latimes.com> 21 June 2009 ATWOOD, Arlene L Beloved sister, mother, and grandmother, Arlene Louise Hawkins Atwood, 63, passed away on June 11th, 2009 after a short, three-month battle with lung cancer. She was born on November 30th, 1945 in Poughkeepsie, New York to Edna Koester and Luther Hawkins. She grew up in Poughkeepsie with her brothers, Denny, Neil, and Bruce. Arlene married and moved to California in 1967 and shortly thereafter gave birth to her son Colin Atwood. Arlene took a job with UCLA where she worked for over 30 years as an Administrative Assistant. She was the proud grandmother to Michael and Amanda Atwood. Arlene enjoyed traveling and dancing the Argentine Tango. Arlene passed away peacefully with her family at her side. A celebration of her life will be held at the Westwood United Methodist Church at 10497 Wilshire Boulevard in the City of Los Angeles on June 27th, 2009 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the San Diego Hospice in Arlene's memory to thank those caregivers who helped both Arlene and her family in so many ways.
