Are the Atwoods from Buckingham County VA related to the Atwoods in Shenandoah VA? This is what I have found: The first one is a Catharine "Kitty" Atwood that was born abt 23 Oct 1762 in Buckingham County Virginia. Her father's name may have been William Atwood born in 1740 and her mother's name may have been Sarah Ligon? Catharine married Samuel Ridgeway in Laurens SC. In 1803 they moved to Ohio in 1803 from Laurens County SC. I also have a Nehemiah Atwood born 07 Dec 1792 in Shenandoah VA. He married a Permelia Ridgway 07 May 1818 Gallia County Ohio. They founded the Rio Grande (College)University in Gallia County Ohio. My research shows that Nehemiah Atwood's father was Sinnett Harry Atwood and mother was Letitia Wood. If anyone would be able to give me clarification on the Atwoods, it would be greatly appreciated. Could these two Atwoods that married Ridgeways be related? William being born 21 Nov 1921 in Decatur. I don't know who your ATWOOD grandparents were, but would be happy to help you. The spelling of the Atwood name does not have a pattern. In fact there are families where one child, spells it with 2 T's and another will spell with 1 T. Henry Wood of Marlborough, Massachusetts had children go by ATWOOD, ATTWOOD and WOOD... so no rhyme or reason. Tracing you tree can be fun and frustrating. First start with your parents BIRTH and MARRIAGE RECORDS, and trace back from there. I have some conflicts to birth dates and such, and even some parent conflicts. I show a John W and Mary Polly having a son in Vinton Co that are related to Richard M. Nixon, but show Thomas and mary Otterson being married on 12-04-1794 in Princess Anne Co, VA. Has anyone reviewed the book 'Nehemiah Wood of Shenandoah Co, VA', I have a copy and it contains quite a bit of Atwood Genealogy out of Va. Any corrections (on either side of the fence) to the above data would be appreciatted. I'm just looking for the data at my website to be correct, but have already connected them with my family and have been working in that area to improve things. Spokesman-Review <www.spokesman.com> 20 Jan 2010 ATWOOD, Kathryn "Kay" (Age 91) Kay Atwood passed to peace on January 13, 2010 after extended loving care at Rockwood South, in Spokane, Washington. Her parents were originallyfrom Spokane, but father, Clarence, was working in Waldo, BC for lumber companies and managing a semi pro baseball team. Kay's mother returned to her parent's home in Spokane anticipating Kay's birth. Kay was born July 1, 1918. After her birth, the family lived in the Waldo BC, and Medicine Hat, Alberta areas. The family returned to Spokane where she attended and graduated from North Central High School. She was an early Cougar, graduating in Pharmacy from WSU in 1940. She fell in love and married George Atwood in Spokane. When George returned from his WWII service in the Seabees, Kay and George moved to Coulee Dam Washington for construction of that project and later to Bridgeport, Washington. Central Washington was developing and she worked as a relief pharmacist for several rural pharmacies in the region, including Bridgeport and Omak, making many long term friends. She was friendly and hard working and truly enjoyed her work, giving small pharmacies in the area the opportunity to take some time off and still have their customers (sometimes very urgent) needs met. She also applied her skills as Mayor of Bridgeport. After some retirement, the couple returned to Spokane and renewed friendships there too. Kay loved living in Central and Eastern Washington and did many things from hunting to golf, playing cards with friends and planning to attend the next rodeo. She also loved her dogs and wildlife. The couple had a passion for exploring. They traveled in the NW, driving the Alcan Highway in the early years. They also ventured around the world with explorations that led them to places including Ngorongoro Crater in Africa, Shanghai, the Sepik River in New Guinea, the outback of Australia and New Zealand. Many friendships rounded out a very full life. Kay is survived by several loving nieces and nephews with whom she shared many adventures over the years. Kay and George were a particularly active part of the lives of nephew Mike Henderson, his wife Diana and children Dan and Denise. She was greatly loved. Kay was preceded in death by her sister, Doris Henderson and dearly loved husband George. Memorial Services will be held at Rockwood South Manor Social Hall at 1:00 pm Monday, January 25, 2010. Memorial contributions in Kay's name may be made to Merry Glen Home and School, 2917 N. Cincinnati, Spokane, WA 99207. Arrangements entrusted to HAZEN & JAEGER FUNERAL HOME, 1306 N. MONROE ST
