Author: KirkBogle58 Surnames: Atwood, Russell, Pratt Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.atwood/1291.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, Sorry, but I don't have a 1850 census record of Warren. There is a record in NY City of Jenette Russel and Jane A Russel in the 1850 census. The only problem with the 1850 Census in NY, NY is that "Jane A Russel" is listed with a date of birth of 1824. They are living in the household of or in the same apartment building as a William M Pratt, b1797 in CT and Julia S Pratt b1801 in CT. Jeanet has a sister Julia born 1801 in CT who married William Pratt from CT on 19 Feb, 1817, so It is certain that "Jenette" and "Jane A Russel" were living with jeanet's sister Julie in NY, NY in 1850 and Warren was not living with them at that time. I learned the information about Jeanet's family from a book scanned into Google bBooks called "The Chapman family: By Frederick William Chapman. There are 6 children, including Jeanet, of Oliver Atwood and Dorothy Chapman listed with dates of birth and spouses with dates of marriage. I should not jump to speak before thinking, but before I found that book I was assuming he died between 1851 and 1860 because Jane A Russell married SB Prentiss in 1851, and she and her mother both lived in the Prentiss household by 1860. Now that I see the record from NY it seems that he was gone from the household by 1850, whether they separated or he died is still a mystery, as is the reason Jeanet had dropped the Russell surname by 1860 and gone by just Atwood. Thanks for the link to the "find a grave" site! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: KirkBogle58 Surnames: Atwood, Prentiss, Russell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.atwood/1291.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks very much! I've been tracing Prentiss family of Vermont. I ran across a publication called the "Gazetteer of Washington County Vermont" that reports Jane Atwood Russel, b 1819 in Connecticut as having married Samuel Blake Prentiss 14 April, 1851 in Cleveland, Ward 2, Cuyahoga, Ohio. They resided there according to the 1860 US Census in the Frederick James Prentiss household. Frederick J. is the brother of Samuel B. Prentiss. S.B. Prentiss is shown as living with F.J. Prentiss in the same census district on the 1950 US Census. "Jane Atwood" b. 1799 in CT, apparently the mother of Jane Atwood Russell, is also in the F.J. Prentiss household on the 1860 US Census, so I assume that she either separated from or became widow of Warren Russell sometime between 1851 and 1860. I wonder why she chose to be called Jane Atwood as opposed to Jeanette Russell. The publication, "Third record Book of The National Society of Colonial Dames In The State Of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" 1908, Snow and Farnham Co., Printers, mentions on page 416 "Ellen the daughter of Judge Samuel Blake Prentiss and Jane Atwood, daughter of Warren Russell and Jeanette Atwood of East Haddam, Connecticut" I hope that all helps you as much as your information did me.
