This is a quote from a web page about Mr. Atwood. It includes 2 newspaper articles about Mr. Atwood's war service and memorial service.. "Two members of the Tenth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment had the singular honor of being in the Massachusetts State Color Guard for President Lincoln as he delivered the Gettysburg Address. One was William Mason, Co. K, a 34 year old Englishman who served as a nurse throughout the war. He died in Spencer, MA. in 1873. The other was John Atwood of North Adams, MA., whose account follows." http://members.aol.com/Mass10th/atwood.html The above is a link from a page about the 10th Mass. Wales and Lucy Atwood as parents of Russel Wales. Other known siblings identified are Elisha Wales and Vine Wales. Other son's names not located yet, and there was also one daughter. Charles, John and William not known as related, yet. Russel Wales was an intinerant farmer between Whitehall, NY and Wells, VT. He married Lucy Ann Sumner in Middlebury in 1860. Now while we are working on the siblings of Russel, we'd also like to find the parents of both Frederick W. Wales and Lucy Atwood.

Gwen I never heard of Lowell, NH..... BUT I checked the Atlas and I could not find any town or village by the name of Lowell in New Hampshire. Hillsborough County is located in southern NH, and about mid-state. Manchester and Nashua are the two largest cities.. Just east of Nashua are Hudson, NH and Pelham, NH. Just south of Nashua are Tyngsboro, MA and Lowell, MA I was in error yesterday when I stated Weare was near Hampstead..... I was off by about 30 miles Weare is located north and west of Nashua and is bordered by Francestown, NH. It would be interesting to find out why the Atwoods of Hampstead removed to Weare. Valerie Your Joshua Atwood (b~1770) who married Thankful ( ), and lived in the Reading and Pittsford, Vermont area, in the early 1800s, may not be a member of either Philip or Harmon Atwoods descendants. I can't, as of yet, place him. Can anyone help us ?? Brad (Researching Atwood, Berner, Pereira, and Potts) (also Kelly, MacDonald, Novotny, and Page) [email protected] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~genesis
I double checked and on the Hillsborough Co. Gen Web cemetery page http://www.rootsweb.com/~nhhillsb/hillscem.htm the cemetery is listed as being in Lowell NH. I think the entire geography of that area is giving me fits. Thanks for the verification. Gwen

There are basically two ATWOOD families that are found north of Boston, MA.... Philip ATWOOD, who originally settled in Malden, MA and Harman ATWOOD, who was from Boston, MA proper. ------------------------ The families are very intermingled in the Haverhill, MA area around 1700, but Philip's descendants migrated west toward Templeton, MA. Harman's descendants remained in the Haverhill, MA area which includes Bradford, MA, and Groveland, MA. But another Harman branch settled in the Hampstead, NH area, which includes Weare, NH And Haverhill/Groveland/Bradford Massachusetts is only about 10 miles from the Hampstead/Weare New Hampshire area. The only "Atwood Cemetery" that I know of in Hillsborough County New Hampshire is the one in Pelham. Its located on Atwood Road just off of Rte 28. This is where John and Hannah (Bond) Atwood and their descendants are buried. Although a few (including Hannah Bond) are reported to be in both Pelham, NH AND Bradford, MA !!! This is about 3 miles from Lowell, Massachusetts Brad (Researching Atwood, Berner, Pereira, and Potts) (also Kelly, MacDonald, Novotny, and Page) [email protected] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~genesis

I just found a reference to this Cemetery in Hillsborough County, NH. Does anyone know anything about it? Gwen Brooks
Thank you Brad for looking into this for me. I am happy to add to the puzzle of Atwoods and I'd appreciate any help from those more knowledgeable than me on the family history. Could someone explain the geography of the MA/NH area to me? (Apart from the list if not appropriate.) I understand that some MA area was "split" off at one time to NH. I found a reference to that and a list of people including an Atwood who ended up on the NH side. I think it was just listed as a John Atwood. I'll double-check. Could this be complicating things? Judy Rhodes in her genealogy work notes a Jonathan Atwood & Mary Wood as Mary "Polly"'s parents and Mary "Polly"'s brother as a Jesse Atwood born in Weare, NH about 1749. http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/b/o/w/Judy-H-BowmanRhodes/GENE3-0001.ht ml I had forwarded her the information about the possible tie-in to John Atwood & Mary of Bradford and asked her opinion but didn't hear back. Does anyone have a Jesse Atwood, b. in Weare NH around 1749? And does he have a sister, Mary? That might help in tracking down Mary "Polly"'s line. I also found some Atwoods here: http://genweb.net/~books/savage/SavageVol1.txt "A GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY of THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND,SHOWING THREE GENERATIONS OF THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE MAY, 1692,ON THE BASIS OF FARMER'S REGISTER." Gwen I hope someone else can shed some light on this. I've been working on this very problem for the past two weeks. As you know, I had your Mary "Polly" Atwood married to a Charles Walker in 1773, in Bradford. It was the information that you supplied that I 'hitched' her up with Adam Nichols. I assumed this to be a second marriage for her. I have no other information to support the marriage of Mary Atwood (daughter of John and Mary (Wood) Atwood) to Adam Nichols. I'm sifting through the Bradford, Groveland, Newburyport records; trying to find spouses and death records to confirm or negate these unions...... Nothing thus far. I hope to get up to Bradford and Groveland in the next few weeks and see if I can get more information from the cemetery records. Would love to hear some other thoughts on this branch !! Brad (Researching Atwood, Berner, Pereira, and Potts) (also Kelly, MacDonald, Novotny, and Page) [email protected] http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~genesis
I hope someone can help clear up a problem I've found concerning one of my Atwood ancestors. I have an Atwood who married my ancestor Adam Nichols about 1782 in NH. Rev. W. R. Cochrane's book, "History of the Town of Antrim, New Hampshire" says "He (Adam) married ____Atwood, probably of Francestown (NH); moved to New York...." My family history passed down by a great aunt in the early '80s says it was a Mary "Polly" Atwood born in Hillsborough Co., NH daughter of a John Atwood & Mary Wood about April 15, 1752. I'm not certain of that year of birth though because their last child was born in 1798. That would put her at 46 years of age. Mr . Potts verified this through his records. However I just discovered something that has confused me and I would like some help. See information below. This came from the web page: http://genweb.net/~blackwell/ma/groveland/Groveland1ChurchRecords.html I'm including all the Atwood information that I copied. If I follow this information correctly I have: John marries Hannah Bond==son John(218) marries Mary Wood==daughter Mary (418). That would be my Mary right? Her birthday matches my information except the year is off by one. However this Mary is shown marrying someone else. Can't be my Mary per this information. Can someone help me straighten this out?
