Following is a brief sketch of his life: S B Atwood was born in Cortland County, New York, February 27, 1820, son of Mills and Charlotte (Day) Atwood, both natives of the Empire State. The father, a weaver by trade, passed his life and died in Columbia County, New York, at the age of eighty-three years. The mother died in 1823. She was a member of the Friends Church. They had four children: David, Gideon, Stephen B, and Jane, all of whom have passed away save the subject of this sketch. Mr Atwood was educated in Onondaga County, New York, and in erie County, Pennsylvania, having resided at the latter place from 1837 until 1843. The last named year he came to Conneaut and engaged in the harness and carriage business, continueing the same until 1878. That year he turned his attention to the granite business, and as traveling agent for the Ryegate Granite Works of Vermont, was on the road for five years. In 1887 he was appointed Postmaster of Conneaut, which position he filled until 1891, when his commission expired. As the incumbent of that office he rendered excellent service, giving entire satisfaction to all. Since 1891 he has been engaged in the insurance business, and since 1892 has been a Justice of the Peace. He was married in Conneaut, January 15, 1843, to Miss Charlotte E Phillips, daughter of Gardner Phillips of Perrington, Monroe County, New York. They had three children: Edwin Gardner, Minnie C, and Lee C. Edwin C Atwood was associated with his father in the carriage business for many years, and was afterward and up to the time of his death in the employ of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad Company, as freight agent, being a man of excellent business qualifications. He was a member of the Masonic Order and also of the I O O F. Of the last named lodge he was elected Noble Grand and his death occurred the very evening he would have been installed in office, January 21, 1891. He died at the age of forty-three. His wife, nee Marion Brown, a native of Scotland, is also deceased. They left three children: Charlotte D, William S, who is in the office of E A Miller, master mechanic of Nickel Plate Railroad Company, at Conneaut, and Burt. Minnie C, the daughter of our subject, was engaged in teaching in Conneaut for several years, but at present presides over her father's home. Lee C, is Deputy Postmaster of Conneaut, having occupied this position for nearly ten years, which circumstance in itself speaks well for his ability. S B Atwood has taken a deep interest in the moral and educational development of Conneaut. He has served as Mayor of the city, for twenty-five years has been a member of the School Board, and has also held other minor offices in the city. He is a member of the I O O F, having filled all the chairs in the subordinate lodge. He takes little active interest in politics, but vots with the Democratic party. Alonzo Atwood, MD, a resident of Middlefield township and one of the large land owners there, was born in Huntsburg township, Geaga county, Ohio, March 11, 1832, a son of Lemuel Atwood, a native of New York state. His grandfather, Joseph Atwood, was also a native of New York, but belonged to an old New England family whose first ancestors in this country settled at Salisbury, Connecticut; he was a farmer by occupation, and lived to the age of ninety years. Lemuel Atwood, father of the Doctor, followed agricultural pursuits. He was married in Pensylvania, but afterward removed to Geauga county, when there were few families residing in Middlefield township. He built a log cabin in the woods and began the task of clearing a farm fro the heart of the forest. He died at the age of seventy-seven years, having led an industrious and useful life. He married Lydia Butler, of Pennsylvania, and they had a family of four children. The mother died at the age of seventy years; she was a member of the Disciples' Church, the first religious organization in the township. Mr Atwood was a Whig and later a Republican in his political belief. Dr Atwood is the fourth of the family. His opportunities for acquiring an education in his youth were limited, although he enjoyed the advantages afforded by the select schools. At the age of nineteen years he began reading medicine, and made a special study of the drugs and herbs growing in the section. He attended the old Eclectic Medical College at Cincinnati for one term, and was graduated from the American Eclectic College at Cincinnati. He began practicing his profession at the age of thirty-two years, being associated with his brothers, who were both physicians. He married in 1860 to Cordelia S Gray, who was born in this township, and they have a family of two children, Harley J and John L. Dr Atwood was engaged in practice at Whitehall, Muskegon county, Michigan, but returned to this county, where he has a good practice, in Middlefield township and West Farmington, his professional service being in demand throughout a wide territory. In addition to his professional work he superintends the cultivation of 273 acres in Middlefield township and fifty-three acres in another tract south of the main body. Some of the farm is grazing land, and it is the Doctor's purpose to put it all in grass. He spends his winters in Florida and has made some investments in the "Sunny South", owning 160 acres in Polk county, Florida. ALthough he began without capital he has accumulated a handsome estate. He has aided largely in the development of his own county's agricultural resources, and is numbered among the most enterprising citizens, both in farming and professional circles. Politically, he supports the principles of the Republican party. - --------------------------------------- Wisconsin, Dodge Cemetery submitted by Eugene Emery Beaver Dam Cemetery - Lot 45 B1 L William H Atwood, born 1812, died May 13, 1907, age 94 Delana , born 1816, buried Feb 3, 1895 Edgar J , born 1848, buried Dec 19, 1917 Mrs Ruth , born 1855, buried Jan 3, 1927 Ethel (Etta) , born 1875, died June 2, 1904, age 28 - ------------------------------------- We Get Letters Dear Claudette I have still not managed to find the birth of my 2 Great Grandfather Charles Attwood, born 1828, though there is a possibility I may have found his parents in the 1851 Cesus, Charles and Ann, who were living in Stepney [England], he was born in Great Hampton, Worcester and she in St Anne, Middlesex, so they probably met and married in London. His occupation was a Sawyer, but all the references I have to Charles' father on the marriage certificate say he was a Labourer, though he would have been in his fifties by that time and may have been infirm and not able to follow his trade. I cannot prove anything until I know the christian name of his mother, it will turn up one day. If it proves positive the Registers fro Great Hampton are still with the Vicar, so I shall either have to visit him or order a microfilm from Salt Lake City as they are not on the IGI yet but have been filmed. I have not been able to copy the Births from St Catherine House Indexes... but I am enclosing the ATWOODs from 1837 to September 1851..... In the search engine I put in the word Atwood and came up with 62 documents that contain the word Atwood among them these: George Washington Papers Series 4. General Correspondence. 1697-1799 (Hard to read) John Atwood, July 22, 1777, Deposition on British Military Operations Ebenezer Atwood, July 17, 1777, Deposition on British Military Operations Print of W.Q. Atwood (1839- ), lumber merchant and orator. Freed from slavery by the will of his master (father), Atwood journeyed to Ripley, Ohio in 1853. He attended an African-American school in Ripley. The Abraham Lincoln Papers at the Library of Congress Series 1. General Correspondence. 1833-1916. David Atwood to Abraham Lincoln, May 23, 1860 (Congratulations) That's all I had a chance to look through. There's several stories or life histories given by people, govt. documents, newspaper articles, etc. that came up. I don't know if they're mentioning specific Atwoods or not but it's worth a look. Cindy The site for the painting: http://www.stockton.edu/~gilmorew/0amnhist/comuhis3.htm Thanks Gwen Brooks !! The Reverand John Atwood's line is a bit obscure.... His parents were from Hudson, NH and I suspect that John was from Pelham, NH and descended from John and Hannah (Bond) Atwood of Bradford, MA but I can't place him so I'm looking for more information.... ANYONE ? John Atwood (~1768-1840) m~1794 Elizabeth Blodgett of Hudson, NH John Atwood (1795-1873) m 1826 Lydia Dodge, whose father was the Rev Solomon Dodge. Documentation for the Atwood Coat of Arms design can be found in Burkes General Amory. Heraldic artists of old, developed their own unique language to describe an individual Coat of Arms. In their language, the Arms (Shield) is as follows: "Ar. on a fesse raguly az. three fleurs-de-lis or." Above the shield and helmet is the Crest which is described as: "On a branch of a tree trunked lying fesscays or, a fleur-de-lis az. betw. two sprigs vert." When translated the blazon also describes the original colors of the Atwood Arms and Crest as it appeared centuries ago. Family mottos are believed to have originated as battle cries in medieval times. A motto was not recorded with this Atwood Coat of Arms. Individual surnames originated for the purpose of more specific identification. The four primary sources for second names were: occupation, location, father's name, or personal characteristic. The surname Atwood appears to be locational in origin meaning "at the Wood", from residence thereby. Every English county has representatives of this surname. Differant spellings of the same origianal surname are a common occurence. Dictionaries of surnames indicate probable spelling variations of Atwood to be Attwood, Atewode, Attewode. Although bearers of the old and distinguished Atwood name comprise a small fraction of the population, there are a number who have established for it a significant place in history. The include: PETER ATWOOD (1643- 1712), Dominican friar, condemned to death because of his sacerdotal character; Charles II sent him a reprieve when on his way to be executed. Atwood governed his brethren as provincial from 1698-1706. GEORGE ATWOOD (1746-1807), English mathematician and physicist, Royal Society member, Cambridge (1776). Author of mathematical works and inventor of Atwood's Machine for verifying laws of acceleration of motion. CHARLES B ATWOOD (1849-1895), American architect, noted principally as the designer of the W H Vanderbilt House, Fifth Avenue, NYC; Chief of Design, of the World's Fair in Chicago (Columbia Museum) and Peristyle Court. WALLACE WALTER ATWOOD (1872-1949), American geologist and geographer, Professor of Physiology, Harvard (1913), President, Clark University (1920), Founder and editor of "Economic Geography" (1925), his chief work was the coal measures of Alaska. Dear Claudette - Vol 4 #4 p44 at the bottom has an inconsistency, in the first two sentences. In William Bradford's "History of Plimoth Plantation" (1651) it is stated that John Atwood was the treasurer. My understanding is that he arrived in Plymouth in 1635 and died without issue. I am descended from John Atwood and Sarah Masterson and would gladly claim the colony's treasurer if it were justified. I realize that this is a quotation from a work by W M Newton (1928) and that you are not responsible for the inconsistency. I continue to be grateful for your work. It is not only interesting but also very helpful. John S Atwood, 620 Plymouth Rd #4, Claremont, CA 91711 Dear Claudette - Have you ever been exposed to cup plates ? They were in fashion during the first two thirds of the 18th century, when it was fashionable to drink your hot tea out of a saucer and needed a place to put your handleless cup. It was handleless because it was made that way, since the handles broke off during the sea voyage from England. Sometime around 1860 some dude wrote that it was uncouth to drink out of the saucer, that you always drank out of the cup, so cup plates went out of fashion. About 100 years later, some enterprising individual began makeing cup plates again, but as fund raisers for exempt organizations. I have been wondering if the Atwood Crest might not be a logical choice for a cup plate subject. The price would be something in the neighborhood of $6-8 depending on who makes the plate. Early plates were of leaded glass and current leaded glass is more costly than the more common soda ash glass. Direct costs would be between $3-5, so the amount above that might be used to support the paper. I will be interested to hear your views on this matter, without any consideration of financing or logistics in connection with the distribution of a plate. There is a Pairpoint plate from the Atwood House, a museum on Cape Cod, that represents one branch of the family. I have enclosed some info on this plate... (Chatham Historical Society honored their headquarters and museum on this plate. The Atwood House was built in 1752 and is one of the older houses in Chatham, Massachusetts. It is architecturally unique in the Cape Cod area for its gambrel roof. It now has twenty rooms showing period furniture, local artifacts and memorabilia. The Tea Cup Plate was made by Andrew Bourbon in clear, emerald, white opal, or ruby glass.) Simeon and Melissa had the following children: Alonzo T, William, Walter H, Charles B, Chloe A, Stephen T, Doctor T, Hannah M, Melissa A, and George N. Simeon and Melissa joined the Mormon Church in 1861 and moved to Utah in 1865. - -------------------------------------------- Queries ATWOOD Massachusetts Can anyone tell me anything about Moses Atwood of Atwood's Bitters fame. The bottle I have says: "ATWOOD'S JAUNDICE BITTERS, formerly made by Moses Atwood, Georgetown, Mass". This is a 12 sided bottle of bluish-green color... This is the last e-mail from me today, I promise, but this is just so good I had to share. It's a portrait by Henry F. Darby of Rev. John Atwood & Family. Scroll down to #R3 and click on thumbnail for bigger picture. http://www.stockton.edu/~gilmorew/0amnhist/comuhis3.htm I know Henry Darby also did portraits of Henry Clay & John Calhoun which are part of the U.S. Senate Collection and hang in the Capitol in Washington but I don't know anything else about him or his work.
