I have written to the list in the past with a mystery as to which Atwood my Adam Nichols ancestor married. I just received confirmation from a kind gentleman, Bill Curtis, who went to New Hampshire Vital Records & pulled this marriage record for me: "It is Certificate # 534 of Hillsborough County. It records a record of marriage between Adam Nichols and Ruth Atwood. No ages are given. The wedding was performed in the town of Hillsborough (just next to Antrim). The service was conducted by the Rev. Jonathan Barnes; clergyman in Hillsborough on May 4, 1786. The document is signed by the town clerk: William H. Story." My Adam was born in MA/NH in 1754. Ruth is his first marriage. I have no idea which Ruth Atwood she is or when she died. I show Adam left Hillsborough County, NH and had moved to Ontario Co., NY by 1819 where he applied for his Rev. War Pension. I'm pretty sure Ruth had died by then. DAR Rev. Records show a second marriage to a Polly Andrews and a child born to them, Mary in 1809. I believe my ancestor Daniel Nichols, born June 1790 is Adam & Ruth's child but I have no proof of that yet. In Cochrane's "History of the Town of Antrim New Hampshire" Daniel is listed as being the child of Adam & __?__ Atwood of Francestown or Weare. Now I know the Atwood was Ruth Atwood. Bill is sending me the copy of the record he made. Isn't this hobby wonderful when there are so many people willing to help strangers? Thanks to everyone. Hi All you Atwoods out there. I have been searching for my Atwoods for quite some time now and could only go back as far at Hiram H. Atwood b. 1839 in Fairview, PA, but have recently found out that Hiram's father was Charles Atwood b. in VT. Where in VT I do not know yet! I believe he may be the son of Peter Atwood and Abigail Silver, but don't have proof yet. However we are going to a "Family" reunion in Branson, MO in June, and I am taking my information and am planning to "PICK some ATWOOD Brains". There is suppose to be over 100 Atwood Desendants there and surely someone can tell me something that they might know. I found in the 1850 PA Census that there was a Charles ATWOOD b. in VT with a wife Elizabeth, a son Hiram 7, a son Alonzo 3 and a daughter Sarah 1. That would mean a difference of 4 years in what I believe Hiram's age to be. According to what I found on the internet Peter Atwood and Abigail Silver, had sons named Hiram and Alonzo. Coinsidence? Could be! But families did pass down names. Anyway, I am going to the reunion and if anyone out there is seeking info on this same family please contact me, I may be able to ask some questions for you too. My line of this family settled in Butte, NE in the early 1900's. Lots of ATWOODS are buried in the Butte, NE cemetery. I would also appreciate any suggestions anyone might have as what I should check out before I go. Thanks Joyce Also seeking information of the DIX, and HANSHEW families that are connected to the ATWOODS. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Atwood, born June 16, 1863, in Sacramento. Lewis Napoleon settled and married in Tulare County, California, but was not married until 1887. He raised his family in Lemon Cove, Tulare County, and passed away in Bakersfield in 1934. His brother Frank lived for a while in Tulare County, and later moved to Arizona with wife, Cassie, where he died. They were both farmers. Lewis N. Atwood married Eliza Marilla Cole (Roberts)on 29 June 1887, and they had three children, Frank, Rose, and Robert Cole Atwood. Family information has always been very sketchy, and nobody knows exactly why. My grandfather, youngest son of Lewis N. Atwood, thought that the mother of Lewis N. Atwood was named Catherine, but my Grandma thought it to be Martha. Some old family pictures have a picture of a woman in front of a tall sundial sitting on the back of a turtle on top of a classic column, and the pictures are labelled Mrs. Conly, [my grandfather's] paternal grandmother. My grandfather, however, never actually met his grandmother, that he remembered. And nobody ever knew exactly why the photographs labeled her Mrs. Conly -- rather than Grandmother or Mother or something. Now you pretty much know everything about Lewis N. Atwood's family that we know. Obviously, this latest information placing the younger brother's birth in Sacramento is about the most concrete thing we DO know about anything before Lewis N. Atwood's marriage and family in Tulare County. deb Christensen

Source: [email protected] From: John & Jackie <[email protected]> Subject: [GLS] ROSS - ATWOOD My 2 Great grandparents were James ROSS, tailor journeyman, and Hannah ATWOOD. They had a daughter (Hannah) born in Cheltenham abt 1848 and then a son (James) also born in Cheltenham about 1850, then another daughter (Mary Ann) born abt 1852 in Cheltenham but they are not in the 1851 census in Cheltenham. They continued to have children born in Cheltenham. I found them in the 1861 census and it says they were both from Cheltenham. Looked in the 1841 Cheltenham census and did not find James ROSS. Hannah was in the 1841 Winchcombe census living with her parents. James died before the 1871 census. In 1871 and 1881 Hannah was said to be from Winchcombe. I have found her and all her ancestors. I have not been able to find a marriage of James and Hannah anywhere. I have had someone look at the BMD indexes for me and have had no success. Found the marriage of Hannah's sister Ann (she was married in Cheltenham) but not the one I am looking for. If anyone can help with with what else to look at would love to hear. Cannot trace James until I know a little more about him. From the 1861 census James was born abt. 1814.
Source: [email protected] From: "Graham, Jenny" <[email protected]> Subject: [NAFAMLEG] 1820s KY/IN poss Indian ancestor I have an ancestor named Mary (surname unk, or may be Rafferty), who is said by one branch of the family to have been an Indian, possibly Cherokee or Shawnee. My branch of the family didn't even know the history back that far. I don't know if this means anything or not, but Mary was said to have been a practitioner of folk medicine who was looked to for help in the community she and her children settled in in northwest AR. Mary _____, b. ca 1790s/1800 in KY set up housekeeping (prob did not marry) ca 1819 in KY or IN with - Hugh McGary, b. ca 1790 in KY, probably a son of Robert McGary and Betsy Womack and thus a grandson of Maj. Hugh McGary who hung out with Daniel Boone, and a nephew of Hugh McGary Jr., who founded Evansville, IN. They had the following 3 children, all born in IN, Posey and/or Warrick County: 1) Eliza McGary, b. ca 1820; married Simeon ATWOOD in IN. 2) Mathew McGary, b. ca 1824; married Martha Graham Clark in AR. 3) Keturah McGary, b. ca 1827; married Nelson Reed Graham, Jr. in AR. Hugh McGary disappeared in 1830 from the family's home in KY, leaving Mary and the kids to fend for themselves. We think he went to IN and married a white woman. Mary and the kids went to IN, then IL, then AR by 1840. She never remarried. Mary and Hugh's granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Graham Ralls lived in MO and was said to have been known publicly as being part Indian. A picture of her makes it plausible, but not definite. Several of her grandchildren had stated emphatically that she was 1/4 Indian. We know of no Indian blood whatsoever on her father's side. Mary Elizabeth had two nieces who also looked part Indian, but no one else in the family did or does. We have no pictures of Mary and Hugh's children except for a picture of their son as an old man with a bushy beard; can't tell what he looks like.
Wonderful, and if so, I'd love to see a picture too. Of course it would have to be sent directly to my e-mail. At this point I'm looking for ANY clues. Judi, I am not positive about this but I am looking into it; I belive that my mother owns a very old picture album from the 1860's. It has the old Carte Visite type cards. I believe there's a photograph of an older woman--as I remember she looks to be in her sixties or so--named "Olivia Atwood". The book is from the Massachusetts area and has been passed down from my grandfather, Clyde Wood. I will check this weekend to see if I can locate it and positively identify this woman as an "Olivia". There are also a James Atwood and several photos of a young girl named Etta Atwood.
