    2. Jeffrey Atwood
    3. My ggrandfather George Washington Atwood had two children in Panama, Lancaster, Nebraska in 1895 and 1896. It is unknown how long he lived there prior to 1895 but he had his next two children in Brush Colorado in 1899 and 1902. He eventually ended up in Oregon, retiring from the railroad and settling in Scofield, Oregon. His first wife Sarah Hedges may have been from Nebraska, she died in child birth and there is little information on her line. George later married Sarah's cousin Maud VanWinkle. It has been my assumption that George travelled with another Atwood and Frye relative in his railroad career. It seems that everywhere he went, there are a substantial amount of Atwood's and Frye's that are not descendants of his. His mothers maiden name was Frye. Perhaps there will be some common threads to link our families in Nebraska. My best guess is that George travelled with one of the children of his fathers half brother Alonzo but I can't seem to find any evidence of that. George's father William was in the beer manufacturing business with Alonzo. Let me know if you find something in common, the migration of George W. Atwood has been my primary focus for the last 6 months. John Atwood, Sr. was granted land in what is now Amite Co., MS in 1807. (Amite Co. MS 1699-1890, Vol III, pg 394) and was listed in census for 1810 in Amite Co., MS. In 1822 tax list, John Atwood, Sr. is shown as 0 white poll, 1 slave, and tax $.75. (This would help to establish his birth date, as after 60 no poll was charged.) Prob. born 1761/62. John Atwood Sr. is shown on this tax list through 1829. There is no list available for 1830 but he was listed on census of Covington Co. MS for 1830. For instance, an Elijah Atwood married 2 Sep 1790, (church record is August without day of month) to Rebecca Prince, at Killingly CT and, he followed other sons of Francis 4 Atwood to Shoreham VT. This Elijah, son of Thomas was evidently not old enough to be him of Killingly, but the latter is not certainly placed; has been confused with an Elisha, of the Thomas of Essex line, who married Mary Skilton. (See Skilton book.) ----- Chester, Vermont Census of 1790 shows these Atwood families in Chester, VT: William Atwood with 2 male over 16 one under 16 and three females Anthony Atwood with 1 male over 16 and one female Oliver Atwood with 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16 and 2 females Jeremiah Atwood with 1 male over 16 and 2 females Family record of descendants of Esek Atwood, of Chester, give Oliver and Miram as oldest known generation, their son Jeremiah and his son Esek. My best guess is that these were descendants of Philip Atwood, but there is a possibility that they came from Connecticut, of the Essex Line, and, that there may have been more than one family of the older generation, or, that more than one line is represented here. Vermont Vital Records show this data: Oliver Atwood died in Chester, 3 Mar 1845, at the age of 87. If age is correct, he was born 1757/8. Record names no widow, so probably Miriam was dead. (I recall someone reporting that, between 1775 and 1780 "Mr. Atwood buried a child at Chester, VT"). Jeremiah Atwood died in Chester 26 Feb 1883 aged 86; his age shows he was not the Jeremiah of Census of 1790. Oliver Atwood died in Chester, 6 May 1869, aged 64 years, 2 months and 10 days. Record gives father as Oliver Atwood and mother Mary Ann, which latter may, or may not, be meant for Miriam. Oliver Atwood died in Chester, 13 Jun 1847 aged 52. He is called Oliver 2nd, seeming to show he was son of an Oliver, which leaves a puzzle to solve. These three deaths are given at Chester, without ages: Stephen Atwood, son of Oliver and Miriam, 6 Aug 1788. Susannah Atwood, Feb 1791, dau of Oliver William Atwood d 1 Oct 1796. The latter may have been him of census of 1790 and probably brother of Oliver, whose wife was Miriam. "Eseck" Atwood son of Jeremiah Atwood and Zilpha Willard d 15 Aug 1872 in Brattleboro, VT, age 62 years and 10 months. If this age is correct, he signed two deeds at Chester before he was 21, and this age does not agree with family record, which is doubted because of those deeds. However, it is likely he signed one before he was of age and the other, for same lands, with a little additional, after he was of age. ----- QUERIES ATWOOD * WOODHOUSE * TIMMONS (VA, IN, OH, WI) Henry Woodhouse m Jacqueline Atwood, dau of William Atwood. John lived at Woburn, removed to Templeton before 1758; evidently joined his sons in NH where deeds would tell more as to dates. There is some uncertainty as to whether all the children I give here, were his, and descendants are advised to search origianl records of Malden, Woburn, Templeton, in Mass., Nelson NH, then to consult "Nelson and The Flag". 5i James Atwood (no record found) m at Woburn to a Richardson; removed to Templeton abt 1773/4 5ii John Atwood b 3 Dec 1752 Malden (records add Jr. to his name) 5iii Philip Atwood 4 Jan 1756 Woburn 5iv Josiah Atwood b 24 Jan 1760 Templeton 5v Nathaniel Atwood b 28 Apr 1766 d 3 Jul 1769 Templeton 5vi Ebenezer Atwood b 6 Jan 1769 d same month 5vii Elizabeth Atwood b 17 Apr 1770 m 3 Jan 1793 to Benjamin Gates of Westminister. His last name may have been Eaton rather than Gates, through an error in my own records. 5viii Lydia Atwood b 25 May 1772 5ix Olive Atwood b 5 Jul 1775 These [following] were also of Templeton and may, due to migrations be children of John and Elizabeth, not recorded. They may also be relatives, or, may even be descendants of Harman of Boston, through his grandson, Joshua. ..5x Esther Atwood m 11 Jun 1778 to Nathan Boynton of Hubbardston ..5xi Thomas Atwood m 10 Dec 1783 to Ruth Barrett This seems a Templeton marriage; but he may have been a stray from Connecticut, and, it would be well to go over records of Phillipston, where lived Capt. John Atwood, probably of the Stephen line, from Cape Cod. [see 5iii Thomas, son of Joshua, marrying Ruth Barrett 4 Jun 1782 /rea] 5xii Isaac Atwood b abt 1763 by his military record; served in Revolution, as from Warwick, where he is recorded as being from Templeton. Searchers will find another Isaac Atwood, soldier, in Warwick, who married Elizabeth Dodge and removed to Brandon VT, son of Francis Atwood of Killingly CT of Nathaniel 3, Nathaniel 2, John 1. From cemetery at Town Hall, Nelson, NH we get this: "Mr. John Atwood, Departed this life Dec 1814 in the 86th year of his age" 4iii Joshua Atwood b 1735 (unconfirmed); m1 1758 to Esther Chamberlain m2 1780 to Mrs Martha Barrett Joshua Atwood perhaps was son of John 3, Oliver 2, Philip 1, but places of residence suggest this, while the name Joshua, and his wife's name, Chamberlain, suggest descent from Joshua, grandson of Harman. He was evidently born around 1734-7 and perhaps was of Woburn, but, 16 Feb 1758 he was published in Westford to Esther Chamberlain; but took up his residence in Chelmsford, and, somewhere before 1766, removed to Templeton. He married 2nd 27 Mar 1780, Mrs. Martha Barrett of Chelmsford, in Templeton, Rev. Ebenezer Sparhawk officiating. 5i Esther Atwood b 27 May 1759; m 11 Jun 1778 to Nathan Boynton of Hopkinton 5ii Sarah Atwood b 22 Jan 1760 5iii Thomas Atwood b abt 1761/2; m 4 Jun 1782 to Ruth Barrett (may be of another family) [see 5xi Thomas, just above - also marrying Ruth Barrett 10 Dec 1783 /rea] 5iv Lydia Atwood b 21 Apr 1765 5v Joshua Atwood bap. 6 Sep 1767 5vi Abigail Chamberlain Atwood bap 16 May 1773 Note (Joshua Atwood (John, Harman) m 18 Apr 1723 to Elizabeth Atkins and among their children was Joshua b 1 Jan 1725 in Boston, but we do not find his marriage there. Meacham 4iv John Atwood (Joseph 3, Oliver 2, Philip 1) b 1 Aug 1749 Newburyport; m at Newburyport 17 Nov 1779 to Hannah Goodhue. I think there is no doubt as to his ancestral line, despite note given, connection with his father. His children: 5i Susan Atwood b 11 May 1780 5ii Thomas Atwood b 18 Sep 1782 5iii John Atwood b 20 May 1786 5iv Hannah Atwood b 16 Nov 1789 5v Mary Atwood b 22 Jan 1792 d 31 Oct 1809 Philip Atwood of Warwick, Mass. lived among sons of Francis 4 Atwood of Killingly CT and may have been one of them, but given names do not seem to be of John line. If of Philip line, I do not attempt to place him. A diary kept for many years by a local justice, and copied in History of Warwick, says Philip Atwood died 2 Aug 1843 and gives his age so close that his birth would seen to have been 31 Dec 1758. His wife Sarah, died 7 Feb 1816. His children: i Asa Atwood b 1784 d 1854 m Sarah Unknown ii Lavina Atwood b 1786 d 1812, unmarried iii Nathan Atwood b 1788 d 1869 m Rhoda Unknown iv Silas Atwood b 1790. At Nelson NH where known descendants of the colonist Philip Atwood lived, is stone: "In Memory of Mr Silas Atwood who died Feb 2, 1818". Silas, son of above Philip, was living in Warwick in 1800. v Nancy P. Atwood b 1804 vi Sarah Atwood b 1809 Ye Atte Wode Annals gives further descendants of this Philip. John Atwood (Joseph 3, Stephen 2, Stephen 1) was born 26 Feb 1726/7 and at time of his father's probate, 1740, apparently was living, but we cannot trace him further on "The Cape". Captain John Atwood died in Phillipston, Mass. 3 Apr 1800, aged 73; correct age to fit, and there seems no evidence to place him otherwise. This may well have been the father of Isaac Atwood, of Templeton, soldier from Warwick. Here are two items from Phillipston records: Intention, 25 Feb 1803, John Atwood and Sukey Lane Intention 4 Feb 1799, Abraham Knight and Martha Atwood Fifth Generation 5i James Atwood (probably John 4, John 3, Oliver 2, Philip 1) probably b abt 1752 Woburn, [removed] to Templeton 1773/4; m at Woburn 10 Feb 1773 to Phebe Richardson. 6i Mary Atwood b 24 May 1774 m 16 Jan 1797 to Samuel Simonds 6ii James Atwood b 6 May 1776 6iii Huldah Atwood b 23 May 1778 5iii Philip Atwood (John 4, John 3, Oliver 2, Philip 1) b 4 Jan 1756 Woburn, bap. Templeton 1758; m at Templeton 17 Apr 1782 to Ruth Gates of Templeton. Bought land at Packardstown 1780 and probably removed there by 1793; (this is now Nelson. See "Nelson and the Flag"). This Philip was a Revolutionary soldier. He died 8 Oct 1841, aged 85, and Ruth died 7 Oct 1819, age 68. They had eight children, among them (according to Gazetteer of Cheshire NH): 6i Silas Atwood 6ii John Atwood 6iii Rufus Atwood From cemetery on Old Town Common, Nelson, NH: "Philip Atwood died Oct 8, 1841 Aged 85 Years" "In Memory of Mrs Ruth Wife of Mr Philip Atwood who died Oct 7, 1819 aged 68" There are two more Atwood stones, one being to Mr. Silas Atwood, who died 2 Feb 1818, who was more likely son of Philip and Ruth than son of Philip and Sarah, of Warwick. The other stone is a boulder, smoothed for the inscription, of which only the words "Mrs. Atwood" could be read in 1925. 5iii Thomas Atwood (may have been son of Joshua 4, John 3, Oliver 2, Philip 1) b abt 1761/2; m at Hubbardston, Mass. 10 Dec 1783 to Ruth Barrett [ note from transcriber: also Thomas 5xi, John 3ii, Oliver 2, Philip 1 marrying Ruth Barrett Dec 1782 /rea] 6i Joseph Atwood b 20 Feb 1784 6ii Asa Atwood b 17 Dec 1789 Philip of Warwick had son Asa.
