Good evening to the ATWOOD list members, I have the subject THANKFUL ATWOOD in my database with neither parents nor siblings. Hopefully someone on the list can assist. THANKFUL married SETH HINCKLEY October 10, 1727, in Truro, MA and I show that they had at least five children. SETH was born December 25, 1707 in Barnstable, a son of SAMUEL and MARY (FREEMAN) HINCKLEY. Any information on the parents and siblings of THANKFUL would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. The following query was on the Plymouth Co., MA board today. You will find two responses to the query below. Can anyone help? Cindy Kostka ====Original Message==== >>> [email protected] 6/18/00 1:47:28 AM >>> Does anyone know where Alice ATWOOD (who m. Wm. MULLINS) was born? Was she born abt. 1573? Was ATWOOD her maiden name or the name of her first husband? I have seen so many places where she was said to be born that perhaps no one knows. Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks. Betty, Middleboro ====First response==== I think this is the person that the Mayflower Descendents groups say her maiden name is not known, and that the Atwood name given to her is not based on sound research. Roberta Casper Watson Direct line (813) 227-7487 ====Second response==== You are absolutely correct. The following comes from Mayflower authority Caleb Johnson's web page: "Further, the maiden name of his wife Alice is not known. It has not been shown to be Atwood, Poretiers, or any of the other identifications that are floating around. [Mayflower Descendant 44:44]. The identification of her as Alice Atwood is based solely on the fact that William Mullins mentions a "Goodman Woodes" in his will. That is clearly not enough evidence to make a genealogical connection! There is no evidence at all to show that Alice was the daughter of Nicholas Atwood of Westminster, Middlesex as claimed by the I.G.I. and Ancestral Files of the Morman church." Hi! Welcome! Your name really surprised me -- my brother's name is Don Atwood and we live in Oklahoma! Hope you're able to find out everything you want. Darla Atwood Boyd
Hello from Albuquerque NM. My name is Don Atwood. My wife Vickiand I are delighted to join the list. My father was adopted into the Atwood family from Mangum OK. Although I do not know his birth family, I suspect it's not far from his adopted family. His adoption seemed to be a big cover up so I may be a direct Atwood decedent. Who knows.... I'd love to talk with anyone from OK or NM. Don ===== Don [email protected] __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages with Yahoo! Don, I live in Kansas City but also have a home in Tucson. Where do you live in New Mexico?
I'm looking for Atwoods in Oregon. My gr-grandmother or was that great-great Olivia Atwood is still missing, after 2 plus years on this list (aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh and pulling my hair) Judi At 04:13 PM 6/16/00 EDT, [email protected] wrote: >Jeffrey, > >My George Washington ATWOOD was born in 1849. My great grandfather, George Washington Atwood, had a son, Homer Bain Atwood in Curlie or Arlie Oregon in 1904. Whichever name it really was, the town was converted to Camp Adair which is near Corvalis. I also, am trying to find out why my ggrandfather was in that region. Most of George's older children ended up in Canby, Oregon where their descendants still reside. His youngest child, my grandfather moved with him to Scofield, Oregon which is between Vernonia and Highway 26 in the coast range. My assumption is that he was working for a railroad company. My grandfather was issued a RR Retirement Social Security Card and he always migrated along railroad lines in Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado and Oregon. If you find a connection to any of these locations or names I would be very interested in continuing dialog. The migration path and reason for his many relocations are my primary genealogical interest at this time. Jeffrey, My George Washington ATWOOD was born in 1849. He is my great Grandfather as well. However, he had no son named Homer. He had 8 other children, though. Are we talking different ATWOODS? If so, I can give you the name of someone who knows of a person looking up Atwoods in the Oregon area. If you would like it, please let me know. Carol Keppen
There are several books where Atwood of Connecticut can be found. Try looking in "History of Ancient Wethersfield, Connecticut", "Early Connecticut Probate Records, Hartford District 1700-1729". New England Historical and Genealogical Register for the year 1861. Vol 15" I found the following on my Atwoods Jedediah Atwood possibly born in Massachusetts in 1718. Married Susannah Deming on November 29, 1747 by David Goodrich, Esquire, Justice of the Peace. She died September 16, 1758. He then married Sarah Loomis of Newington, CT on November 22, 1759 by Silas Loomis, Justice of the Peace. Jedediah was fined in November of 1745 for criticizing the doctrines of Reverend Mr. Wadsworth of the Hartford First Church. Jedediah was probably an adherent of Reverend Mr. Frothingham, a Baptist Separatist. Frothingham started the Baptist Society Church in Wethersfield. Jedediah removed to New York. (this is where William Atwood in his family history says Jedediah died - 12/1810 in Hartford, Washington County, NY) Children of Jedediah - Timothy born 9/9/1749, Bathsheba died 2/20/1761 according to Newington church records. The following was found in a book titled "History of Ancient Wethersfield, Connecticut, Vol. 2 and another book called "New England Families, Vol 3 - Thomas Atwood (Doctor) was said to have been a captain of a company raised by himself in Cromwell's "Ironsides" Regiment and that at the battle of Marston Moor (7/2/1644), a spent bullet knocked out two front teeth and lodged in his mouth. Others say he wasn't a captain but only a physician. He is supposed to have descended from Thomas "Gent" of Broomfield, Essex, England and came to Plymouth, Mass. about 1640 and married Abigail in 1667. She was 17 and he was 57 years of age. He built a log cabin and later on the same site built a brick mansion which was destroyed by fire. A nephew, Edward from England joined him. They built the first sea-going vessel at Rocky Hill and later they built more and engaged in the West India Trade, bu the nephew died at sea and their property was lost. He came to Wethersfield as early as 1663 and was a householder there in 1670. He died probably early part of 1682 as the inventory of his estate was taken on October 24 of that year. As a physician, Thomas Atwood had an extensive "ride" extending from Saybrook on the south to Woodbury on the west; and he owned land in Rocky Hill and also west of the mountain in Newington where his youngest son settled. Children of Thomas and Abigail - Abigail born 9/30/1668 Andrew born 9/1/1671 - Andrew got land in the allotment of 1694. He died without issue Jonathan, born 6/8/1675, settled in Woodbury, CT. Jonathan became at doctor at age 19. Was among the earliest settlers in Woodbury. Josiah, born 10/4/1678 Mary, born 5/29/1681 Josiah is my ancestor. He married Bathsheba Lattimer and had the following children - Abigail, born 12/6/1710 in Wethersfield, CT Oliver, born 3/1/1715 or 1716 in Wethersfield, CT. He married Dorothy Curtis Jedediah, born 6/28/1719 in Wethersfield, CT. He married Susannah Deming Josiah, born 4/12/1727 in Wethersfield, CT. He married Caroline Mygatt Hezekiah, born 4/12/1727 in Wethersfield, CT. He married Abigail Hun. Arthur, born 12/27/1729 in Wethersfield, CT . He married Mary Mitchelson
