That was me, Stephen. Although I've been to Ted's corner once before, I couldn't figure out how to search or find anything. I'll go back this morning and look again. Thank you for remembering my little quest for Frank Atwood. :) deb - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - deb Christensen ([email protected]) Graphics Connection Forum http://www.computingcentral.com/topics/graphics/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeal & Steve Atwood" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, July 22, 2000 6:54 AM Subject: [ATWOOD] Frank Atwood > I have lost an address. (From a letter from Dan Atwood 1980 Salt Lake City UT) Richland County was completely un-inhabited (except by Indians)in 1832 when Chief Blackhawk led his defeated band of Sauk Indians in retreat down the Wisconsin River to what was to be Richland City, and then across Richland County up Pine River to Rockbridge and then up the west branch to near West Lima. In 1836, John R. Coumbe from the lead and zinc mines in southern Grant County crossed the Wisconsin River near Port Andrew and laid out a farm near there, where he lived for the summer. He returned in 1838 with 6 other families to make the first permananet settlement. Richland County Wisconsin was organized as a seperate county in 1850, and when John R. Coumbe too the first census in that year he found 977 population, including the family Solomon Pippinger, his sister, Susannah and her husband Henry Fazel, came in 1853 and settled in Sylvan twp., Henry dying in 1854. Before 1860, another sister, Mary Ann, with husband Dickerson Fazel, settled next door and probably on the land of the Widow Christina Cooper, where he may have worked for her, although he did have a trade that of, strangly enough cooper--barrel maker. Solomon moved to Cerro Gordo IL, in early 1860s and Dickerson and Mary Ann took over his farm, and when Israel Davis and Rebecca (Pippenger) came in 1864, they moved into a house just vacated on the Cooper farm. In 1866, the widow Cooper married my ggf, William Harrison Atwood, and the same year Elizabeth Ann Davis md. Chas.Marshall Atwood. In 1870 census Israel and Rebecca Pippenger Davis were living next door to her sister Susannah Pippenger Fazel in Sylvan Twp. Before 1870 came Elizabeth Pippenger and her husband and cousin, Levi Pippenger settling next door to Dickerson Fazel, probably also on Solomon's Land. In Elizabeth's family was her father Peter. Levi and Elizabeth Pippenger were in Forest Twp in 1880 Census and also her nephew Levi and Susa Caylor Davis. It is interesting tome as some indication of short span of time involved, that when I lived on our farm in Richwood in 1916, the widow of John R. Coumbe was living in the house next door at the age of 95. (the above was written in 1980 by Dan Atwood to our cousin Gene Sawyer) The Pippengers, Fazel, Davis families came from Pyrmont Carroll County IN. I hope that someone somewhere can get a little information out of this letter. Happy Digging Catherine Leinbach
Catherine: Oh, I'm looking for Frank/Francis Atwood who married Melissa Catherine Reymore (also spelled Remore, or Rima) in 1857-8ish and had a son named Lewis N. Atwood in 1858-9ish. I know, I know, you're looking at this mail and saying, Yeah, and WHERE did this happen, deb? So far, I don't know. Might have been NY, WI, MI, or, on a long shot, MO or IA. They headed to California by Wagon train, through whatever the name of the route was that took you through Salt Lake City and then through Nevada. Frank never made it to California. Family stories are VERY few and far between about that, and about him. Heck, our branch of the family didn't even know what either one of their names were until two months ago. And we're the ones descended from him. I learned their names from descendants of her second husband two months ago. He vanished before they crossed the Sierras. She had his second son in CA July of 1863. She named the baby Francis M. Atwood -- which seems to indicate to me that's a good sign he didn't abandon them, or I think she might have named him *anything* else. :) I cannot locate this small family on an 1860 census so far, cannot locate a birth record for either son in any place they were "said" to have been, cannot locate a marriage record for them in any place where family lores said they were married. So ... I'm down to scouring the likely places for likely Francis/Frank Atwoods. Grandma Melissa died with whatever secret she was keeping. >From that point forward, I can find everything right where we expect it, her second marriage, census listings for the family, everything is right on the money from 1864 to 1934 when both the sons die, Lewis here in CA, and Frank M. in AZ. So...which Frank/Francis Atwood ... is a good question. ::grin:: I have a couple NY and WI counties films on order I'm going to look at next. I just thought I'd toss a note here in case someone else had lost a Francis/Frank Atwood... :) I'm wondering if something DID happen to him out on the trail, whether it was an accident, or he did something that got himself into serious trouble, or whatever, where such records would even be. :( Are there lists of people in wagon trails, the equivalent of passenger ship lists? I look at the bright side, with so little to go on, I don't have to chase too many false leads... deb (Atwood) Christensen - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - deb Christensen ([email protected]) Graphics Connection Forum http://www.computingcentral.com/topics/graphics/ ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, July 18, 2000 11:39 PM Subject: Re: [ATWOOD] Misc. I spent a bit of quality time with my friendly 1860 census films today, and found several Atwood families that are obviously not the ones I was looking for. But in case YOU are looking for them: Grass Valley, Nevada County, CA, 1860 M. Atwood, age 43, Male White. Miner. Property: $2,000 3,000, born in England J.A. Atwood, age 34, Female born in England F. Atwood, age 13, Female, born in England Frank Atwood, age 11, Male, born in England M. Atwood, age 5, Female, born in Calif D. Atwood, age 4, Male, born in Calif (At least it was closer to the letter "D" than anything else I could figure out...) and a M. Murphy, age 33, Female, born in Ireland was living with them. San Francisco, 8th District, CA 1860 Francis Atwood, age 11, Male, Born in England Enumerated with a Rev born in England, Minister of the P. E. Church, whatever that is, three teachers, and 5 other students with various surnames and places of birth, all around the same age. Grandby Township, Newton County, Missouri, 1860: Francis Atwood, age 33, Male, White, Miner ... born in Kentucky Milly Atwood, age 20, F, born in Tenn Mary Atwood, age 1/12, F, born in MO David Dans?n?, age 3, M, born in MO [WHAT do you mine in Missouri?!] Some people collect stamps. I collect Frank and Francis Atwoods... deb - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - deb Christensen ([email protected]) Graphics Connection Forum http://www.computingcentral.com/topics/graphics/

Brad, I lived in Atwood, Tennessee some years ago and still live near there. I was quite interested in the origin of the name even then because my surname is Atwood. All I could ever find out about the history of Atwood is that it was given its moniker by the railroaders who stopped there to pick up pulpwood. Or "at wood". Much the same as the origin of the Atwood name in England. I know that my line of Atwoods came through this part of Tennessee. Several settled in Paris, Tennessee. It is possible that the town took its name from the Atwoods, but to date all I can find is the account of a pulp wood pick up point for the railroad. I hope we here from some others about towns named Atwood. Thanks Brad. This is a great webring. Stephen R.
