She 'published' the newsletter until 1997. It is primarily queries and group sheets from its subscribers, with a spattering of old records and books. Ruth Atwood and I have uploaded (almost) the first 12 volumes, out of 15 that I'm aware of...... Hopefully, we will get ALL volumes online by the end of this year ! Brad

    1. [ATWOOD] Atwood Family Crest
    2. Jeffrey Atwood
    3. I ran across this on the SPENNYMOOR UNITED A.F.C. Web Site http://www.spennymoorunited.fsnet.co.uk/crest.htm The crest emblazoned on the shirts and blazers of the players and club officials, is also the coat of arms granted to the town in 1952. The significance of the coat of arms may have little interest to the football supporter but will give an insight into the history of the town and the surrounding area. The coat of arms bears the inscription " Spe Nemo Ruet" which apart from having a striking similarity to the name Spennymoor, means, "With hope no one shall fail." On the arms, in the first and fourth quarters, appears a lion rampant on red ground set about a cross in the arms of the Attwood family. The gold fleur-de-lys in the second and third quarters is taken from the arms of the Coulson family. These quarters surround the gold cross from the arms of Durham County, with the addition of ten drops of blood, representing the combat at Butchers Race, which played a great part in the Battle of Neville's Cross.

    3. Hi Kate, Our paths cross again! I do not have ATWOOD ancestry, however, my lady friend is an ATWOOD descendant. I am following her family lines as they so often mingle with my own. I have the ancestry, back to 1195, of a Stephen ATWOOD, supposedly (weak sourcing) born March 9, 1748/49 in Plympton. I don't show his spouse. I show his parents as Nathaniel ATWOOD Jr. & Abigail Shaw. Does any of this sound like it might be of interest to you? As the March 9 is pretty solid but the year is weak, it concievably could be correct one. I'm willing to send you whatever data I have. I have resources available here that might shed more light on this. I'll check them. It will take me a while. (Life is hectic - it's more hectic in the good weather! I'm not home much.) Do you have, or have access to, "Ye Atte Wode Annals"? That has a LOT of data. However, it is hard to follow. It is a collection of bits & pices of data & jumps around. Libraries in your area should have it. Higginson sells it for $16.50. (I have it.) Do you have, or have access to "The Mayflower Descendant"? Again, libraries in your area should have it. I have it on a "Broderbund / Family Tree Maker" CD. That is where you are most likely to find data of use to you with this family line.
