    1. [ATWOOD] Harriet Atwood
    2. Brad Potts
    3. Diane I've searched my database for any Harriet married to an Atwood or born to an Atwood in that time frame and .... nix I suspect she was named after Harriet Atwood Newell, who was a missionary from New England to India and died there in 1812. She was married to the Rev Samuel Newell. Many, many Harriet Newell Atwoods (as well as other surnames) named after her. 3. Atwood Ancestors Vol VII No 1c Published by Claudette (Atwood) Maerz, Spring 1989 TRIP TO BROOMFIELD [ENGLAND] Submitted by Dr. Charles Attwood, 621 N Ave K, Crowley LA 70526 [NOTE: These trip notes were so interesting I decided to transcribe them in full. /rea] In March 1988, Jo Ann and I went to London. While there we wanted to visit Broomfield in Essex, where records indicated that Thomas Atwood was born. He was the first emigrant to the United States in my direct lineage. His birthdate was 1610 and the year of his arrival in Plymouth was 1650. We couldn't find the city of Broomfield on any map of the county of Essex. No one we talked to had ever heard of it. As a last resort we planned a train trip across Essex to the city of Cholchester located near the coast. When we reached the station of Chelmsford, a town about 25 miles from London, there was a delay in the schedule, because of work on the tracks ahead. We sat in the train, waiting, when finally a lady boarded the train and sat across from us. She overheard us talking about our search for Broomfield and said "Broomfield is right here. It's now a small suburb of Chelmsford." We thanked her and got off the train, taking a taxi to the little suburban cillage of Broomfield where the center of things seemed to be old St. Mary's Church built in the 11th century. The old stone church was surrounded by great oak trees and the grounds were covered with ancient gravesites. It was getting dark and we couldn't find any Atwood sites, but didn't have time to look at many of them. Photographs were taken of the Church and grounds. We next went to the Chelmsford Public Library where some booklets were found on the ancient history of Bloomfield. In one of the booklets, Broomfield 1974, the following was found: January 30th 1649, "after King Charles I was executed at Whitehall, his librarian, Patrick Young, retired to the obscurity of the parsonage at Broomfield. His daughter Elizabeth had married John ATTWOOD, Esq., and it was at his son-in-law's house that he spend [sic] the last three years of his life. The Attwood's house stood on mound, clearly visible. It was a substantial house." We have no way of knowing if John Attwood was the brother of our own Thomas who left for Plymouth in 1650, but there was probably very few people of this name in the small village of Broomfield at that time. Thomas' father's name was also Thomas. If so, since Thomas had served under Oliver Cromwell (who had ordered King Charles I executed, it could have been uncomfortable for Thomas to remain in Broomsfield. He was 40 years old when he left for America in 1650. We called the current paster of St. Mary's Church who told us that all church records for that period were now at the Essex Record Office. We did not have time on this trip to go there. He gave me a name of a local citizen, a Mr. Ken Searles, who does a lot of work on genealogy as a sort of hobby. His address is 19 Glebe Crescent, Broomfield 004770. The St. Mary's pastor is Rev. A. D. Ritson, of Broomsfield (telephone number is 0245440318). Another name that may be helpful is Mr. W.H.D. Clark, 33 Mill Lane, Broomfield. We located a Mormon Church in Chelmsford. We called from London and left some of the information we were interested in. We have made no further contact, but plan to in the near future. TRIP TO GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA Submitted by Dr. Charles Attwood, 621 N Ave K, Crowley LA 70526 On December 28th, 1988, Jo Ann and I flew to Greenville in search of more information about my Great, Great, Great Grandfather, Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood. I had been under the impression that he was the first Atwood to leave the vicinity of Woodbury, Conn. He attended Yale and there met John Calhoun who convinced him to settle in South Carolina. This is the same John Calhoun who later became vice president of the United States. They apparently remained friends. My first stop and site of most of my Greenville visit was the Greenville County Main Library, a wonderful place with an entire area, the South Carolina Room, devoted to local history. This is presided over by Mrs. Penny Forester, a genealogist. She helped me do the census searches with the microfilm. We found Dr. Curtis Atwood in the 1850 census. We also found him as one of the founders of the Buncombe Street Methodist Church. The church still exists and is a massive structure. According to the diary of Mr. Robert McKAy (who married Dr. Attwood's daughter, Octavia) the Sunday School was organized in 1836. Dr. Attwood was listed as one of the Sunday School Managers. One of the teachers was Martha Attwood, another daughter of Dr. Attwood. Judith Attwood, his wife, was listed as belonging to "Class 1". Nancy Attwood was listed as belonging to "Class 2". This was apparently another daughter of Dr. Attwood. Martha was married on Nov 16th 1838 to Mr. James D. Henderson of Newberry District (by Rev. Mr. Crowell). I later found a note that Martha Henderson, wife of James Henderson and daughter of Dr. CB Atwood, died after a short illness, leaving two small children, one of which was only 6 months old. She was 26 years old when she died. I noted in the 1850 census that the household of dr. Curtis Burke Attwood in Greenville contained himself, aged 67, his wife Judith, aged 60, and a little girl by the name of Martha Henderson, his granddaughter. His real estate owned at that time was valued in this census at $5000.00. Married on 28 March, 1845 in Greenville: Miss Octavia Virginia, daughter of Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood, to Robert McKay, Esq. Some land transactions were found indicating that he probably donated the land for the Buncombe Avenue Methodist Church. Several land transactions were found on Buncombe Road. Some of the records [I] already had showed that Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood [was] buried at Springwood Cemetery in Greenville. I found this cemetery a few blocks from the library in the center of the downtown area. It was a giant cemetery and the records of gravesites of people buried that long ago had been destroyed by fire in the 1950s. I started looking at the oldest gravesites near the entrance. I found nothing for nearly an hour. Then I caught the name "Octavia" boldly engraved across the bottom of a gravestone about 50 feet from where I was looking, a site just adjacent to the busy downtown street. As I approached it, I could easily read the inscription on the stone: "Octavia Attwood McKay, buried next to her mother." The next gravesite was a bricksided rectangular structure with a large slab stone covering it: Judith Attwood. Next to it on the far right facing the road was another gravesite similar in size and made of brick and stone slab cover. Its slab top was engraved: Sacred to the Memory of Curtis Burke Attwood Born 10th April 1783 In Woodbury, Connecticut And Died 28 Oct 1851 Lived 71 Years, 6 Months, and 13 Days Leaving A Wife and Four Children And Thirteen Grandchildren The Deceased Was a Practicing Physician for Many Years In Newberry District And In All The Relations of Life Respected and Esteemed By All Who Knew Him I believe the reason that few records exsited in Greenville of the early life of Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood is indicated on the stone. He spent those early years in Newberry. This is probably why a listing of all practicing physicians in Greenville during this time contained no listing of Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood. He had apparently retired to Greenville, and was no longer a practicing physician. This lettering was in good condition and covered by deep layers of green moss.I could read it only after scrubbing off the moss with an old pair of pants found nearby. I could not get the inscriptions cleared very well on the graves of Judith and Octavia. I hadn't noticed it at first, but there were two small children's graves beside Octavia's grave. These were on the extreme right of the family plot facing the street. Across a small sidewalk was a tomb engraved with the name of McKAy containing about 7 or 8 spaces. The names of these were not recorded by me on this visit, but certainly belonged to Octavia's husband and in-laws. Someone at the Library told me there was a street downtown in Greenville named after Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood. I found Atwood Street just a few blocks away from the cemetery. It seemed to be several blocks long, and according to Mrs. Forester (at the library) it was the old street leading up to the Attwood home. Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood apparently added the extra "T" to the name when he came to South Carolina. I find it spelled both with one and two T's in most records. On the gravestones it appears with two "T"s. All the records of his ancestors in Connecticut, including Thomas from Broomfield , England used one "T". For more information on Dr. Curtis Burke Attwood I will look to Newberry SC where he must have lived and practiced. His son Rocius lived here before he moved to Arkansas shortly after the Civil War. If anyone has further information , or is interested, please contact me. ---------- LETTERS From: Sandra Jerome Atwood, 2205 Country Club Drive, La Place LA 70068 Seeking more information on: 1 Austin L. 1. [ATWOOD] Peter Atwood
    2. Does anyone have any idea who the parents of Peter Atwood, born September 10, 1791 were? We think (because of what is stated on some censuses) he was born in New York State, but aren't sure. Finding records on him is next to impossible. He married Laura Whitney in Chester, MA in 1814. His first child of record was born from that marriage....Sophia Atwood (Daniels), born 1814 (she is my ggg-grandmother). Peter and Laura were on the 1820 Russell, MA census....looks like they may have even run a boarding house by the number in their household. We don't know what ever happened to Laura. Peter remarried in 1825 to Mehitable Phebe Clark and had another family. They were on the 1850 Wyoming County, NY census. We think he died somewhere in New York State between 1850 and 1860 because (I was told) M. Phebe was listed on the next census as a widow. We believe that Peter's mother may have been Native American. I would very much like to find out who his parents were....where he was born....if he had siblings.....where/when he died. Any information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Bev ([email protected])

I am sorry, but I don't have sources noted very consistently, but I did note under Oliver: "contact Mary Fournier Atwood [email protected]" and with Elijah and Anna Jocelyn I had as source of the numbered comments "Ref: EARLY PURITAN SETTLERS OF CONNECTICUT (A Catalogue of the Names of the) by Royal R. Hinman; Press of Case, Tiffany and Company. 1852. pp. 74-5, 77-81 [from Atwood Ancestors Vol 3] also lists as Elijah's child: 4 Molly m Elijah Weller Children: Huldah Weller, Benjamin Weller, Orry Weller m Cady Benjamin Weller enlisted into the U.S. Army." ----- I also have a note that there was some confusion about whether Elijah was son of this or another Jonathan, but I suspect Brad's database will be able to clear things up Ruth Atwood [email protected] ===== 5i Thomas Atwood b 1610 Broomfield, Essex, England d 1682 Wethersfield, Hartford, CT m abt 1667 to Abigail Unknown b 1650 Wethersfield, Hartford, CT 1713 6iii Jonathan (Dr) Atwood b 8 Jun 1675 d 1 Jan 1733 or 11 Feb 1733 m 5 Nov 1701 to Sarah Terrill dau. of Roger Terrill and Sarah Scott 7i Nathan Atwood b: 6-Sep-1702 Woodbury, CT d: Abt. 1726 Woodbury, CT 8i Elijah Atwood b 11 Apr 1724 d 29 Nov 1804 Woodbury, CT m Anna Jocelyn b 29 Jun 1729 New Haven, CT d 1814 9vi Elijah Atwood b 20 Jan 1765 m Abigail Atwood (see Jonathan 7iv, David 8v) b Woodbury, CT d 29 Jan 1834 10i Washington H. m Maria Stone 10ii Harriet b abt 1797 m Philo Atwood (see Oliver 7v, John 8v) Philo and Harriet's probable children: 11i Possibly, Abigail born April 4, 1816, she married July 6, 1847, John Tyler 11ii Minerva married- had issue- Ellen md. Minerva Atwood #454 ELIJAH ATWOOD Elijah and Annah's son Elijah was born March 15, 1765. He was nicknamed "Hardhead." #227 HARRIET ATWOOD Elijah and Abigail's daughter Harriet was born around 1797. She married Philo Atwood. #226 PHILO ATWOOD John and Martha's oldest child was born in 1782. He married first Ms. Fairchild, and secondly by 1816 (per deed) Harriet Atwood (see Atwood family). According to the 1840 census of Woodbury, Litchfield, Connecticut he was 50 to 60 years-old, his wife was 40-50, they had eleven children, including a female, Harriet's (#113) age. He is not listed in the 1850 census. Harriet supposedly died when Harriet Maria was young, which if she died between 1840 and 1850, Harriet Maria would have been between 10 and 20. Harriet Atwood Atwood's Grandfather David Atwood left his daughter Abigail's share of his estate to her heirs (one-fifth each). In 1816 Philo and Harriet Atwood deeded the rights to the property that was left to her Grandmother Martha Atwood to Harriet's Uncle Elijah Dailey. #113 HARRIET MARIA ATWOOD Philip and Harriet's daughter Harriet was born in Woodbury, Litchfield Co., Connecticut on July 28, 1830. Supposedly her Atwood family lost their land in Connecticut due to back taxes. Her mother died young so her sister Minerva raised her. I suspect she traveled to Lima, Washtenaw Co., Michigan with her sister and other Atwood cousins, as Chauncey Atwood (a second cousin) witnessed her marriage (as did Samuel and Annor Webster). She married Joseph Needham (see Needham family). There is also speculation that the family lived near Concord, Merrimack Co., New Hampshire. Harriet's death certificate said her father's name was Philip, but maybe she was the daughter of Philo and Harriet Atwood (226/227). The pedigree in Keith Harvey's baby book that would have been written around 1955 shows her father as Lord Johnathan Atwood of London, England, I think a few generations must have been skipped for this to be possibly the case.

I do NOT have vol VII No 2, so my next offering is Vol XIII No 1, which is 80% done. Ruth Atwood [email protected] I don't suffer from stress; I'm a carrier

    2. Anyone have info on this line?: PHILO ATWOOD John and Martha's oldest child was born May 19, 1782, in Bethlehem, Litchfield, Connecticut. Philo and Harriet's probable children: 1. Possibly, Abigail born April 4, 1816, she married July 6, 1847, John Tyler . 2. Minerva married Mr. Webster - had issue- Ellen md. Horace Andrus (had children- Clarence, Archie, Ward, Myrtle, Percy, Blanche md. Gilbert Blue), Viola md. George Washington Napoleon Bonaparte Hepler(had children- Myrtle, Arthur, Iva md. Mr. Ralston, Clifford, Chamberlain, Clara md. Mr. Hakes of Homer)- note that Philo had a sister named Minerva, so that helps support the contention of Minerva and Harrie being the daughter of Philo and Harriet. 3. Harriet, see below (#113). ELIJAH ATWOOD Elijah and Annah's son Elijah was born March 15, 1765. He was nicknamed "Hardhead." He married Abigail Atwood (see Atwood family). They had five children. She died January 29, 1834. Elijah and Abigail's children: 1. Washington Harry was born around 1788, he married Maria Stone, had issue- Mary md. Levi Crouch Jr., Edward md. Eliza Pitt, Walter, Henry. 2. David was born around 1791, he married Huldah Manvill, had issue- Henry md. Hannah Thomas, George, Charles md. Ms. Russell, Sarah, Elizabeth. 3. Harriet, see below. 4. Henry Clinton was born March 13, 1801, he married October 6, 1822, Jane Lum, he was the Inspector of Customs in New York City, after that he was a Surveyor and a Gauger, had issue- Charles W. md. Henrietta A. Hammond, Henrietta. 5. Annor "Abigail" married George Ketchum, had issue- Frederick, Mary, Rollin. I have a letter that refers to a round-robin letter written May 23, 1877, from Henry C. Atwood (as in Henry Clinton) to his sister Abigail, the other side is from Harriet M. Atwood, the letter says "I am at Samuels", "love to Frederick, and Wallace and his wife", and then says to "direct the letter to Dexter, Washtenaw County" but then says "I am coming back in the spring for I do not like Michigan", they also refer to "father not being well" another letter in the package that is addressed to Ridgeway, Orleans Co., New York says "Harriet is getting married" #227 HARRIET ATWOOD Elijah and Abigail's daughter Harriet was born around 1797. She married Philo Atwood (see Atwood family).

Yes, this is the same Joe E. Atwood, and Nora Blakeney was wife number 4. He had five known wives, and at least 20 known or acknowledged children. Isn't that something? But some of the census records do not give the right ages for the children. Mack Cennon Atwood was my grandfather. He was son of Joe by his second wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Crosby Green Atwood. I do have a picture of Joe with his son Pleasant Henry, Sr. (Pleas), and I have a picture of Betty, also. If you would like, I can send them to you! What do you know of these folks, are you connected? I have gotten lots of info on this family, but would love to know more. Hope to hear from you! __________________________________________________ FREE voicemail, email, and fax...all in one place. Sign Up Now! http://www.onebox.com

    1. [ATWOOD] William H. Atwood

    3. It's been awhile so I thought I would see if anyone remembers the above fella. William was born in 1852, in North Carolina, the census sez. I found him on the 1880 Tazewell Co., VA. census, single at 28. (Here he sez he was born in VA) The LDS record show his son, Thomas, being born in 1884 in Tazewell Co., and he is married to a lady called 'Munar'. I later find both of the men in Giles County, VA. Can anyone help with William's marriage and parents? or just anything? Siblings, children, whatever? Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give.
