    1. [ATWOOD] Re: Chemung Co NY deeds & Seneca John Atwood

    3. I believe I found a connection!!! In an email sent several months ago, C.F. Barenbrugge <charle4780 @aol.com> wrote: "Lovertus Stanley Felter married Frances M. Atwood b 14 Jan 1897 NY d Oct 1985 NY; m 8 Aug 1919 in Binghamton, N.Y in Christ Church. They had 2 children, Charla Elizabeth Felter & John Wesley Felter. There are 8 children all living between Charla & John. Most of the Felters still reside in New York. Frances Atwood's father's name was Seneca John Atwood & he was a diabetic who died in the 1930s. She played the piano & Seneca John Atwood played the cello. He also smoked cigars & was the proprieter of a general store. Frances was an only child." About 2 weeks ago, Brad forwarded information from Margaret James [email protected] who was researching Deeds for Michael & Lucinda (Livingston) Smith. >From the Chemung Co NY deeds submitted by Maragaret James I (Ruth) found this family line described: 1 Abram Atwood b d 10 Feb 1866 m Betsey Livingston 2 Seneca John Atwood b 4 Apr 1861 m Eliza () 2 Elanah B Atwood b 21 Dec 1864 m David Sanford (in 1892 living in Troupsburg, Steuben Co, NY) I suspect the Abram Atwood mentioned here is of the following line (link is marked ==>): 1 Benjamin Atwood b abt 1750/60 in CT d 20/28 Oct 1828 at Big Flats, NY; m 13 Jun 1774 at the New Windsor (Orange County, then Ulster Co) NY Presbyterian Church to Deborah Mosher/Mosier (m2? Ruth Ensign). They first appear in Orange County, NY 1790 - 1800. Abt 1800, they remove to Tioga, now Cheming Co., NY. 2i Joseph Atwood b bef 1780, Orange Co, NY, d shortly after marrying Sarah Rockwell (who m2 John Bennett m3 Benjamin Atwood 2iii) ==>2ii John Atwood b 1780 Orange Co NY d 4 Mar 1868 Catlin NY; m 9 Jan 1809 in Big Flats, Chumung Co., NY to Betsey Whitney b 12 Jan 1790 Chemung Co NY d 20 Apr 1871 E. They lived at Horseheads, NY. 2iii Benjamin Atwood m Sarah Rockwell Atwood Bennett (see 2ii) 2iv Martha Atwood m Mr. Mores 2v Mary Atwood b 13 Dec 1779 near Montreal, Canada, d 4 Feb 1865 Fairfield Twp, Lenawee County, MI; m 18 Apr 1802 in Big Flats (Chumung Co., NY) to Abraham Low b 2 Feb 1777 NJ d May 1834, Lenawee County, MI. (This info from a Low Web-Site by Ann Hood who lives near Ann Arbor, MI). 2vi Ruth Atwood M Mr Pound or Pond 2vii Elizabeth Atwood m Mr. Turner. --- 2ii John Atwood b 1780 Orange Co NY d 4 Mar 1868 Catlin NY; m 9 Jan 1809 to Betsey Whitney b 12 Jan 1790 Chemung Co NY d 20 Apr 1871 E. Leroy MI 3i David Atwood b b 17 Feb 1810 Big Flats, NY ; m Emily Unknown b abt 1809 NY 3ii Hector Atwood b 10 Oct 1812 Elmira, NY. 3iii Benjamin Atwood b 26 Jun 1816 Big Flats, NY d 4 Apr 1874 East Leroy, Kalamazoo Co., NY; m 30 Nov 1834 in Big Flats, NY to Mary Abigail Olney (d/o of Zelotus Olney and Dorcas Saunders). They removed to Lycoming Co., Pa, then Calhoun Co., MI, then Kalamazoo Co. MI 3iv William Atwood b 15 Feb 1818, Elmira, NY. ==>3v Abram Atwood, b 1821, Big Flats, NY. 3vi Thomas Atwood b 17 Jan 1827, Big Flats, NY; m Mary Jane Yoemans 3vii Jeremiah Atwood b 14 Jan 1827, Big Flats, NY. 3viii Hannah Atwood b 17 Oct 1830, Elmira, NY. ----- The deeds certainly seem to tell a story of a family that invested in property and eventually fell on hard times and had to sell everything. When I sent this information to Charles Barenbrugge, he wrote: "...you have found my great grandfather & his side of the family. Elizabeth Atwood mentioned in deed of 1899 was my great grandmother. The property that was sold on court house steps in 1899 was sold to my great grandmothers brother in law, David Sanford who was married to one of her sisters [sic - should be sister-in-law /rea]. My grandmother was born in Van Etten,New York in 1898. I have always heard from my mother how her mother, Frances Atwood, told her that she was related to the explorers Livingston of Stanley & Livingston. This fits with the Livingston name mentioned in info you sent to me. MY grandmother told my mother that her parents had lost a lot of land when she was young & her father, Senecca John Atwood had to work in a cigar factory & also ran a hotel which is where my grandmother was raised in as a young girl. Well I have pictures of my great great grandmother, Betsy (Livingston) Atwood if you are interested. " Now, if anyone has proof that the Abram of the deeds is the Abram of the Benjamin & Deborah Mosher/Mosier line, that would complete this little connection! Ruth E. Atwood [email protected]

    2. Several weeks ago, Brad asked if anyone knew how Atwood, Kansas got its name. I finally looked it up at the library yesterday in a book on the history of Rawlins County, Kansas. Here's what it said: "In April 1879, T.A. Andrews and J.M. Matheny came to Rawlins County. They established a townsite about two miles east of the present location of Atwood, and named the town Attwood for Matheny's fourteen-year-old son who accompanied his father on the move west." ========== Valerie Williams

    3. Hello, This was extracted from the History of Georgetown, MA (on the Web). http://www.gsbgrafx.com/georgetown/gthist.html During the latter part of the nineteenth century, Georgetown continued to prosper as more industries and shops, such as the manufacturing of clothing, cigars, soap, furniture, coffins and caskets, began their businesses here. ..... Moses Atwood made patent medicines and was best known for his "Atwood ’s Bitters". A New York City firm bought the Bitters formula and, under another name, sold the medicine nationally until the mid-1900’s. Atwood also made the first daguerreotypes in town in 1847. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Thursday, August 31, 2000 5:14 PM Subject: [ATWOOD] Moses Atwood, Georgetown, MA Does anyone know who >the Moses Atwood of ATWOOD"S JAUNDICE BITTERS, of Georgetown, MA was?
