Hello Folks. In scouring the countryside for my ATWOOD ancestor, I ran across one Buel Atwood and wife, in an 1863 Oregon Trail mention from the Autobiography of Mrs. Oscar F. Thompson, "Reminiscences of Oregon Pioneers" Edited by Mary E. Johnson; Published Pendleton, OR: East Oregonia Pub. Comp, 1937 It's just a citation, but I thought I'd pass that along to anyone who may need it. Nope, I have no idea what it says, or who Buel Atwood was. But he wasn't Frank Atwood, who didn't go to Oregon, so I didn't pursue it any further. :) deb - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - deb Christensen ([email protected]) Graphics Connection Forum http://www.computingcentral.com/topics/graphics/
Valerie-Just had to send you these items I found in the Brandon (VT) Union a weekly newspaper- Brandon Union, 31 July 1896 (Brandon News) "Mr. Joshua Atwood of Milwaukee Wisc. is stopping at home of Mr. Perry on Grove ST " Same paper Nov. 27,1896 "Mr. Joshua Atwood, formerly of Shoreham VT and well known in Brandon but later of Milwaukee was struck by a train at Middlebury and fatally injured" I think he was descended from the Warwick Mass. Atwoods some of whom went to Shoreham VT. My line, Osaac 4, came to Brandon Vt Shirley ---------- > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: [ATWOOD] Joshua & Thankful STONE(!!!) Atwood ------------------------- In the Genealogy of the Gilbert Atwood Family by Raymond Thomas Atwood... James Atwood, born 10-23-1832, died 1-16-1866, married Elvira J. McQuaid on 2-8-1851 in Marshall, KY. They had three children: 1. Mary Hester, who married James K Mabry on 10-21-1869 in Trigg Co., KY; 2. George E. who married Susan Adeline (Lina) Jones, born 12-16-1862, died 8-19-1948, (George and Susan buried in the Atwood Cemetery in Trigg Co., KY), no children; 3. Martha Mattie)who married Ted (T.P.) Walleridge on 11-6-1879, no children. James R. Atwood is buried on the Whie Farm on Long Creek Road (and there is a picture in the book of his tombstone) - when you get to the Old Baptist cemetery off Highway 68 to the left take the same little road to the right and go about 1-1/4 miles. You will see two large elm trees standing close together just over the fence on the left side of the road and you will find his marker there under the trees. It is broken but was still there in 1970. From: Alice Nicholson <[email protected]> ------------------------ Marqua, thank you so much for your response. You have certainly helped in filling out some blanks, and I know I am definitely on the right track. __________________________________________________ FREE voicemail, email, and fax...all in one place. Wonderful News! Through PML I received the following excerpt from the book, "History of Portage County, Ohio" published by Warner, Beers & Co., Chicago, 1885 JOSHUA ATWOOD, retired, P.O. Freedom, was born February 29, 1812, in Pittsfield, Vt., son of Joshua and Thankful (Stone) Atwood, the former a native of Massachusetts, the latter of Vermont. Our subject was educated in the country schools, and was a farmer until seventeen years old, when he began to learn the blacksmith's trade with a Mr. Egleston in Pittsfield, Vt., with whom he continued for three years and then worked for himself a few months in Rutland, same State, and at Pittsford one year, after which he engaged with Mr. Egleston one year, and then for a time worked for himself. He came to Ohio in 1836 and opened a blacksmith shop at Freedom, this county. In 1844 he added a carriage manufacturing department and soon employed as many as eight men, and supplied the demand within a large radius. He was very successful, and in 1875 he retired from active labors to enjoy the fruits of many years' hard and persistent toil. Mr. Atwood was married in 1838 to Aurelia Birge, who died in 1874, leaving no children. He and she were among the first members of the Congregational Church at Freedom. Our subject has served the township honorably as Treasurer and Trustee. He is a pleasant gentleman; in politics a representative Republican. His brothers-in-law, Lasell and Simeon Birge, came to Freedom Township, this county, the former in 1832, bought 400 acres of land and erected many of the buildings in Freedom Center. Simeon Birge, who was a physician, moved away in 1838, while Lasell remained until 1846 or 1847. The father of our subject was in the war of 1812, and participated in the battle of Plattsburg. I "talked" with the person who posted this on OH-FOOTSTEPS-L and she said that there are no references listed for this book. But at least it will give me a surname to look for since there were an unbelievable number of Thankfuls in New England back in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It also suggests that Joshua was from Massachusetts -- before I had no idea where he'd come from before Vermont! I sure hope someone else is as excited about this as I am! Valerie
