    1. [ATWOOD] Jacob M Atwood (1933 - 2008), Sandwich, MA
    2. R Bradley Potts
    3. Cape Cod Times <www.capecodtimes.com> The Boston Globe <www.boston.com> 7 June 2008 Jacob M. Atwood EAST SANDWICH When Jacob M. Atwood first joined the bar, colleagues counseled him to learn to play golf. The links, they said, would help him build a flourishing practice. Heeding their advice, he bought a used set of clubs, found three partners who promised patient instruction and headed to a public course in Melrose. And on the third tee of his very first game, he hit a hole in one. Unfortunately for him, but to the enduring benefit of thousands of clients for the next 52 years, the ball had sliced badly to the right and landed in the wrong hole on an adjacent green. He decided then and there that the best way to become a successful lawyer was to become a great lawyer. That afternoon, he retired the golf clubs forever. Mr. Atwood, a founding partner of the Boston law firm of Atwood & Cherny, P.C., passed away at his home in East Sandwich on June 4, 2008. He was 74 years old. Mr. Atwood practiced law for more than 50 years. He developed a national reputation in the practice of family law and trial of high profile divorce cases and custody disputes. During his more than 50 years of practice, he helped formulate precedent-setting cases that Massachusetts lawyers rely upon in nearly every aspect of family law, including child custody, pre-marital agreements, inherited wealth, Fifth Amendment privilege in divorce matters as well as other significant cases. Mr. Atwood often appeared on "Larry King Live" and provided frequent television, radio and newspaper interviews in connection with his high-profile cases. He also authored many learned treatises and articles involving family law that are still relied on today by family law attorneys. Mr. Atwood was a 1956 graduate of Boston University School of Law, where he served as a senior editor of the Law Review. He also received an honorary degree from New England School of Law, where he also served on the Board of Trustees. He was a founder of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He served as president of the Massachusetts chapter for two years. He was also a longtime member and former officer of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the Massachusetts Trial Lawyers Association. He was consistently certified in The Best Lawyers in America. While Mr. Atwood enjoyed a most distinguished legal career, he maintained an active interest outside the law restoring and building representations of authentic 18th-century homes and raised Scottish highland cattle on his Cape Cod farm. He has been featured in Yankee Magazine and other national publications. He was also a devoted member of The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts, as well as The Order of the Founders and Patriots of America. Mr. Atwood was quoted as saying, "Divorce is the single most traumatic event anyone will go through in their life, even more so than death because that person is gone. Through the years in representing literally thousands of divorcing women and men, I have tried to give them some hope that eventually life will get better again. As lawyers involved in this emotional area of the law, our duty is to not only get our clients a good result, but to protect them from themselves in doing so." He leaves two sons, Jonathan of Boxford, and Bradford and wife, Lorraine, of Sharon, Vt.; a daughter, Heather; and husband David Rabin, M.D., of Rockport. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Julia of Boxford, Caleb, Abra, Caroline and Bruce of Vermont, and Isabelle and Georgia of Rockport. A gathering to celebrate his life will be held in the gardens and orchards he planted and nurtured in East Sandwich, on June 22, at 1 p.m. Donations may be made in his memory to the Home for Little Wanderers, 271 Huntington Ave., Boston, MA, 02115

    3. The Westford Historical Society Westford, Massachusetts 14 June 2008 (Saturday) 11 am to 1 pm (same day as the STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL on the Town Common, parking at the Congregational Church, J V Fletcher Library, Westford Town Hall, Roudenbush Community Center. Come early, enjoy the Festival, then a short walk to the Atwood House) $5/ticket for Society Members, $7/ticket for non-members [List Members who are interested, are welcome to park at MY house, and walk to the tour. Contact me, Brad Potts brad.potts@mindspring.com.] Atwood-Millett House Tour On Saturday June 14 the Westford Historical Society will provide house tours at the historic Atwood-Millett house at 4 Graniteville Road. The Victorian house retains most of its original architectural features. Although it will be emptied of its contents, the Historical Society will feature various displays highlighting objects from the house and information on the family members who lived there. Daniel and Carolyn Atwood moved to Westford in 1858 from Pelham with five children and Carolyn's father, Edward Carlton of Methuen, and lived on the "Nashoba Farm" at the corner of Hildreth Street and Concord Road. Their sixth child, Mary "May" Atwood was born here in 1860, and their children attended the Westford schools. Daniel and Edward were deacons in the Union Congregational Church, and Daniel also served as its treasurer. In 1878, when Daniel retired from farming, they built the house at 4 Graniteville Road. The barn housed their carriage and horses. The Victorian style home is typical of the period, and it is obvious from papers and objects left in the house that the family enjoyed social occasions, trips to Florida and overseas, and church activities. When Daniel and Carolyn passed on, their three unmarried daughters, Carrie, Lilly and May, lived in the house. Carrie was the choir director at the Congregational Church, Lilly served as its Treasurer after her father's death, and May was the church organist. May Atwood is probably the most remembered in town. She was the benefactor of the Mary Atwood Lecture Fund at the J.V. Fletcher Library, and the upstairs meeting room is named for her. After Carrie and Lilly died in the 1940s, May invited her niece, Grace Millett, and her family to live in the Westford house with her. Grace, her husband Nathan and their son Bill joined May in the house. After 1951, Grace and Bill lived together in the house. Bill, a World War II Navy veteran, was an artist and used the barn as his studio space to paint portraits. His works also include landscapes in oil, pastel and watercolor. Bill Millett lived in the house until his death last November. He was known to many people about town as the ma! n who walked everywhere. Bill frequented the library where he sketched and shared stories with other patrons. The Westford Historical Society is grateful to the heirs of the Atwood-Millett estate who have been very generous in providing this unique opportunity to tour one of Westford Center's historic 19th century homes and in sharing the history of the family with the town. Doors will be open 11am-1pm. Tickets are $5 for adult members of the Historical Society, $7 for non-members. Students and seniors are offered a $2 discount. Children under 13-years are admitted free with an adult. No parking is available at the house, but it is within easy walking distance from Westford Center parking areas.

You say that your grandfather thought he was born on one date and SSI informed him that it was a differant day. What was the birthdate that he thought was correct ? Have you requested his SSDI file ? It seems odd that they would correct his birthdate, so the file should explain any discrepancy. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: cfeason Surnames: Atwood Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.atwood/1236/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to track down an original copy of this wonderful family history manuscript, so far without success, written in 1900 by William Atwood, then in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, but who was born in NY and spent most of his adult life in Illinois. A number of libraries have copies of a typewritten transcript made by Margaret Herberger and Ruth Crim, probably in the 1950s, and I have a copy obtained from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Illinois. I have also seen a transcript dated 2000 and posted online by Sandra K Enkey. There are many differences in the two transcripts, with the Enkey transcript having whole paragraphs missing in the Herberger/Crim version. Thus my interest in finding the original, or at very least, a first-generation transcipt. Also, in his manuscript, William Atwood states that "[t]his portion of my family history is not one half that I have recorded in my book. I have kept a diary account of events transpiring during the last 41 years..." Has anyone come across this diary? There are two clues: The Herberger/Crim transcript says "book now in posssession of: John F. Boose, 807 Western Avenue, Henry, Illinois." Cataloging information in OCLC WorldCat indicates that "original copy in possession of Siphorous Gates, Loveland, Colorado 1958." Thanks much!!
