I'm looking for anyone who might have more information on the descendants of Loring Atwood. He was the son of Nathan and Rhoda (Kingman) Atwood of Warwick, Massachusetts. He was born 17 Jan 1816 in Warwick, MA He married, in 1845, a Mary L Hutchins, she was possibly married to, or related to, a Litchfield. They lived much of their life in Rutland, Vermont. He was in the Chair Making business. They had 3 children: Mary "Irene" Atwood, born 13 May 1848 in Winchester, NH. She lived with her parents all her life. She never married. She was a dressmaker. She died 19 Nov 1903 in Charlestown, NH. John P Atwood, born 10 Oct 1853, in Winhall, VT. He lived in Springfield, VT. He was in the Lumbering Business. He married in 1884, Jennie M Stickles. They had one daughter, Susie I Atwood, born 19 Aug 1885 in Shaftsbury, VT. Susie lived at home most of her life. She was a Music Teacher. Sometime before 1959, she became the second or third wife of William A McIntosh. She had no known children. Susie (Atwood) McIntosh died in 1971. John P Atwood, died 27 Jan 1933 in Springfield, VT. Jennie (Stickles) Atwood died in 1950. Alice C Atwood, born 4 Feb 1861, in Rutland, VT. She married William J Bassett, of New Haven, CT, 26 Jul 1887. She died 31 Mar 1890. No known children. There is a William J Bassett, living in Milford, CT in 1900. He is listed as married, but no wife or children are living with him. She was born on February 8, 1929 in Temple, Texas. For the next 18 years, Nita lived with her parents, Covert and Irene Reynolds in Freer, Texas. Nita graduated Valedictorian from Freer High School in 1946. She married Edward Lee Atwood on June 6, 1947 and moved to Edinburg and began their amazing 61 year marriage. She finished her education at Pan American with a Masters of Education. She started her 31 year teaching career at Sam Houston Elementary in 1957. When Freddy Gonzalez Elementary opened, Nita transferred to the new school, where she continued to teach 3rd grade until her retirement. She then substituted in Edinburg schools for an additional 8 more years during her retirement. Nita loved children and it was reflected in the manner in which she taught. Nita was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Edinburg for over 50 years. She was active in teaching Sunday School, Children's Church, and organizing and teaching Vacation Bible School. The Houston Chronicle <www.chron.com> 17 July 2008 John Horton Atwood JOHN HORTON ATWOOD, a descendant of two passengers on the Mayflower, and twenty-two American Revolutionary soldiers, peacefully passed away at home, at the age of 85, on July 13, 2008, in Houston, TX. Born January 27, 1923, in Janesville, WI, the son of Leo Holmes Atwood & Besse Burch Atwood, John spent his formative years in Janesville & Fort Atkinson, WI, Evanston & Chicago, IL, and South Bend & Mishawaka, IN. John graduated from Wisconsin's Delavan High School in 1940, where he lettered in football, baseball, & basketball. After high school, John attended engineering school at the University of Wisconsin, where he played first-string half-back on the freshman football team. In 1942, John enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He made two assault landings on the Pacific Atolls of Engebi and Eniwetok, which are part of the Marshall Islands. Wounded in action, John received the Purple Heart. John was honorably discharged at the rank of Tech Sgt. After the war, John played football & baseball at Purdue University. John was a Pi Tau Sigma Scholastic Mechanical Engineering student at Purdue, where he graduated with honors in 1951 with a BSME degree. In 2007, Purdue recognized John as one of its outstanding mechanical engineers. John played two seasons of professional football for the NFL's New York Giants. John played running back, cornerback, and handled kick-off and punt returns. John spent his entire career in the petroleum industry. He was an Exec. VP with Global Marine, & founded Atwood Oceanics. Both companies were international offshore oil & gas drilling corporations & became members of the NYSE. John finished his career operating various Atwood drilling & service companies, including consulting work. John married Janet Morrissey in Elkhorn, WI on January 8, 1949. During their 59 years of marriage, John & Janet had six children, and became grandparents to twelve grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Jane Borchert & Carol Wentworth, his daughter, Marjorie Jane Atwood, his father & mother-in-laws, five brother-in-laws, and one sister-in-law. She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Stephanie Atwood; her parents, David N. and Dora J., nee Wickerham, Lucas; two sisters, Thelma Thompson and Helen Arnold; three infant sisters, Cindy Jean, Juanita, and Anita; a brother, Richard Lucas; and an infant brother, Eugene. Surviving are her husband, George R. Our Dad, Husband, Grandpa, Uncle and Friend. Jim died unexpectedly Monday surrounded by his family and friends. He fought a long courageous battle living with cancer. He always had hope, a smile and a never ending sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his father John Atwood, Step-father Leonard Forward and Sister Eileen Johnson. Survived by his Mother Fannie Forward of Fort Bragg, his Wife Evelyn of 16 years, a sister Darlene Thomas of Fort Bragg and brother John Atwood of Olympia. He was blessed with 12 children. Survived by 3 daughters, Deborah (Jon) Cyr, Diana (Jim) Roark, Pinole, Denise Atwood, Rio Vista, Grandchildren Taryn & Kyle Cyr, Jessica & Shawna Roark and Amanda Brutto, Dennis (Sandy) Bowen, Antioch, David, Brent Jeff Bowen, Minnesota, Randy Bowen, Illinois, Bruce, Sacramento, Tim Bowen, Antioch, Paula (Jimmy) McCullar, Roxanne Brown, LA, Chrissy & Brian Bowen, Shane, Gabrielle Tommy (Oliver), Antioch and numerous more. Devoted husband of Mary (nee Densmore). They had been looking forward to the celebration of their 50th anniversary in July. Loving father of Margo (Germain Labonte) and Cindy (Sean McConnell). Sadly missed by grandchildren Kelan and Aiven, Gabrielle and Camille. Survived by brothers David and Evatt. Predeceased by his parents and sister Ruth. Affectionately remembered by extended family. Retired instrumental music teacher of John Rennie High School, Pointe Claire, QC where he taught for thirty years and was fondly known as Uncle Wally. Wally enjoyed sharing his time and talents with both the church and community. Friends and family may visit at Murray Street Baptist Church, 175 Murray Street, Peterborough from 7 to 9 p.m. on June 12 or at the same location on June 13 one hour prior to a 2 p.m. memorial service.
