Sorry, I do not know about the NY Atwells. My Atwells were in Virginia in the 1700s. I am looking for Laetitia Atwell who married Major John Lee in 1770 or so in Culpeper VA. She died in childbirth March 29, 1775. John remarried Elizabeth Bell. Laetitia Atwell's son, Willis Atwell Lee was raised by his uncle Hancock Lee and was an early settler of Frankfort KY. I have no clues as to her parentage. Perhaps she hailed from Northumberland or George County. There was a Thomas Atwell who served under Richard Lee, Major John's great grandfather. Major John was born at Horsepen Ridge George County VA. His mother was Mary Willis. His father was Hancock Lee II of Ditchley. His grandfather was Hancock I of Ditchley and his grandmother was Sarah Allerton, grandaughter of Issac Allerton of the Mayflower and of Fear Brewster, daughter of William Brewster. Willis Atwell Lee had one child, a girl, Laetitia Atwell Lee. Atwell is still a family first name, here and there. Thanks for any help.
