    3. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------6CD619E23C0D Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi Everyone! Trying once again to organize my files, which I have been trying unsucessfully to do for about 12 years now! Have finally typed into a text file some of the info I have on the Atwell line. Hope this helps someone! If you can make a connection to any of this info would appreciate hearing from you. My Atwell line starts in Metcalfe Co., Ky. with my grandmother, Hallie Brown Atwell m. James Henry Hubbard. Her father was James Findley Atwell m America Slinker. James F. Atwell's father was James Quinton Atwell, and his father was Joel Atwell. From here, the only proof I can find of Joel Atwell's father is a letter from Mrs. Elsie Atwell Smith written in 1987, (she was in her 90's at the time), and said that Joel's father was John Atwell. Later will post the letter with her information in it. She corresponded with me for several years before her death, and helped me tremendously to sort out the Atwell lines in Metcalfe & Green County, Ky. I'm still looking for documentation that John is Joel's father. Any help would be appreciated. Merry Christmas to all! Such names were employed in France at an early date (such as La Porte "at the entrance to") and were introduced into England by the Normans, many of whom were known by the titles of their estates. The surnames adopted by the nobility were chiefly of this type, being used with the particles "de", "de la" or "del" (meaning "of" or "of the"). The Saxon equivalent was the word "atte" ("at the"), found in such names as John atte Brook, Edmund atte Lane, Godwin atte Brigg, and William Atwood, John Atwell and Atwater; in other cases The Norman "de" was substituted; and in still others, such as Wood, Briggs, and Lane, the particle was dropped. The surnames of some of the Pilgrim Fathers illustrate place designations. Winthrop, for instance, means "of the friendly village"; Endicott. "an end cottage"; and Bradford, "a broad for". The suffixes "ford", "ham", "ley", and "ton", denoting locality, are of frequent occurrence in such English names as Ashford, Bingham, Burley, and Norton....." ****************** 1635 - Original Lists of Persons of Quality - 1600-1700; 25 Decembris 1635, Ye Port of London, "Theis vnder-written names pames passed in a Catch to the Dowwnes: and were put aboard the aforesaid Shipp. Wm. 3. Greetings, I thought I would try my hand at finding the ATWELL connection that has eluded me for 16 years. I am searching for the ancestros of Almarinda "Marinda" ATWELL. She probably died in Newton Co., Missouri, but I have no proof of that. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. 2. Jackie Clifford
    3. My ancestor, John Atwell, came to Nova Scotia ca. 1761 as part of the New England Planters. He was a cabinet maker, his wife's name was Ruth and he had children: Holthum?, Nancy, Esther, Richard. He died before March 1785, as documented in the book "Planters and Pioneers" Nova Scotia 1749 - 1775, Ester Clark Wright Revised Edition 1978. My gggrandfather was named Cyrus Atwell, wife Maria (1821-1917). Cyrus died at age 76 in 1892, which would make his year of birth 1816. I do not know yet which of John's sons was his father. Do you, Steve, have any information in your documents about John Atwell, he could have been from Connecticut, Rhode Island or Mass.? Any light you can shed on this subject would be much appreciated. Thank you. Jackie Atwell Clifford

    3. Hi, Thanks for your reply re: Anna Atwell and George Atwell. Somehow I believe there may be a connection; but do not know at this point. When I get more information I'll send it to the Atwell Rootsweb. Just moved into my new house here and I have the birth cert of Anna Atwell Cool's daughter Florence Topeka Cool. I will take a look at it and find out just where in Iowa she was born. This is just the beginning of a search for me. Do any of you have any Atwells with American Indian Ancestry? Just a long shot; however, you know how family lore is--everyone these days believes that they have American Indian ancestory and some do; however, we are looking at the Cool/Atwell family closely to see if there are any connection there to family rumors. Anyway, thanks for your response and I will be in touch as soon as I get more data. Annie

    3. Hi all, Jackie, you might want to talk with Steve in Richmond at svonhitrit@dscr.dla.mil He has info on the Atwell family in New England area. Annie, All the Atwells I have were born and died in Georgia, except maybe George W. He may have come from Alabama, I'm not sure just guessing. The only info I have on George W. Atwell is from the obits of his children. He married Sarah Keel abt 1860 and thier children were born between 1860-77, but I can't find any census record of George and Sarah together. You mentioned the name Anna. The Anna in my file was born Nov 1860, five or ten years after your Anna. It could have been a family name, maybe an aunt of the Anna in my file, still just guessing. Mickey, the Atwells might be quite, but we have to get u'm talkin' and sharing what we know. Michelle, I know what you mean about college and time. I started college jan of 98, it's tough holding a job, family, Boy Scouts, genealogy, and college. Good luck. 3. I agree! Can you (LPN25@aol.com) provide geographical locations for your ATWELLs? My own ATWELL ancestors/relatives moved from Maryland to NC to KY, with the move from NC to KY occurring around 1810-1830, depending on which particular family group is tracked. ATWELL, by the way, is also the maiden name of my wife. Though I have accumulated bits and pieces on her genealogy, I have not found the time to enter it all into my computer and coordinate those bits and pieces of information. With some of the given names in your overview, your ATWELLs might very well look as if they could provide a connection, but then some of the given names were very common in the past, so that it always is helpful to have some places or regions come along with any name. 2. Russell & Nancy Jones
    3. Hi all, I just subscribed to the Atwell board Saturday evening, I was going to wait and read a few messages before I jumped in, but havent seen any yet!! Anyway here goes. Ny name is Russell Jones, I live in Lizella, Ga. The Atwells that I am researching are George W. Atwell married to Sarah Keel. The only info I have on George is from the obituary of their children. Sarah Keel was born abt 1841, in Georgia, Alabama, or Ireland depending on which obit you read and died April 27, 1908 in Macon Ga. Their children are Anna b 1860, Josephine b 1864, Mattie b 186, Jessie b 1868, George Dorris b 1870, and James William b 1877. Sarah is listed in the 1880 Upson Co., Ga. census with children all listed as born in Ga. There is no record of George in 1880. Around 1888 they move the family to Macon. I have found a listing for George W. Atwell married to Sarah Peterson Feb 1850, but if this Sarah is mine she would be 9 years old. Also George is listed as marring Mary Jane Peterson in 1848, probably a sister. Well thats my story, and I am STUCK.
