    3. Sorry, I do not know about the NY Atwells. My Atwells were in Virginia in the 1700s. I am looking for Laetitia Atwell who married Major John Lee in 1770 or so in Culpeper VA. She died in childbirth March 29, 1775. John remarried Elizabeth Bell. Laetitia Atwell's son, Willis Atwell Lee was raised by his uncle Hancock Lee and was an early settler of Frankfort KY. I have no clues as to her parentage. Perhaps she hailed from Northumberland or George County. There was a Thomas Atwell who served under Richard Lee, Major John's great grandfather. Major John was born at Horsepen Ridge George County VA. His mother was Mary Willis. His father was Hancock Lee II of Ditchley. His grandfather was Hancock I of Ditchley and his grandmother was Sarah Allerton, grandaughter of Issac Allerton of the Mayflower and of Fear Brewster, daughter of William Brewster. Willis Atwell Lee had one child, a girl, Laetitia Atwell Lee. Atwell is still a family first name, here and there. Thanks for any help. 2. Is anyone out there researching Atwells in Dutchess Co, NY in the late 1700s and/or early 1800s? I just got a clue that my Atwell family, which settled in PA, may have come from Connecticut to PA via Dutchess Co, NY since the maternal line had cousins (surnamed PEPPER) who followed this same route. My Atwells bought land in PA from these same cousins in 1834, making me think they may have traveled together. I am looking for a WILLIAM ATWELL b.1790c who married ESTHER PEPPER b.1790, both from New Fairfield Co, CT. They were in Luzerne Co. (in what is now Lackawanna Co) PA by the 1830s. 1. Obituary: Tarah Scott Rock, 86, Horse Cave, KY
    2. Gary Bastin
    3. I regret to report the passing of cousin to many on the BASTIN-L and ATWELL-L lists, Tarah Scott Rock. She was a double cousin to many on these two lists, through her dual ATWELL descent. Her BASTIN ancestry has been traced as follows: Floyd Rock == Tarah Scott Charlie Scott == Donia Wilcoxson Ulysses Grant Scott == Emma Lydia Bastin James Bluford 'Bluford' Bastin == Margaret Jane Atwell Thomas 'Tommie' Bastin, III == Louanna 'Annie' Shofner Thomas Bastin, Jr. == Mary W. 'Nancy' Atwell Thomas Bastin == Hannah Brockman It is also possible to outline another connection through the ATWELL family to the descendants of Thomas Bastin, Jr and Mary W. 'Nancy' (Atwell) Bastin. Going back from Tarah's great grandparents, and specifically tracing just her ATWELL ancestry: James Bluford 'Bluford' Bastin == Margaret Jane Atwell Benjamin Atwell == Susannah 'Lucinda' Erwin John 'Jack' Atwell, Jr. == ??? ??? John Atwell, Sr. == Elizabeth ??? (her maiden name could have been Wayson) John Atwell, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth were the parents of Mary W. 'Nancy' (Atwell) Bastin, who was Tarah's third great grandmother through the BASTIN descent described earlier. Tarah was therefore descended from her earlier ATWELL ancestors through two paths of descent. The following obituary appeared in the Glasgow (KY) Daily Times on Wednesday, June 7th, 2000. " Tarah Scott Rock Horse Cave, KY- Tarah Scott Rock, 86, of the Shady Grove community, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000 at the T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow. She was a Green County native, a housewife and a member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Donie Wilcoxson Scott. Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Floyd Rock of Shady Grove, and a host of friends and relatives. The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Shady Grove Baptist Church with burial in the Houk Cemetary. Visitation will be 1:30 to 9 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Winn Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. until time for services Thursday at the church. " (Note: Although I don't know for sure, I also believe that her husband, Floyd Rock, is likely related to the many BASTINs who are descendants of David Walker SMITH through David Walker SMITH's mother, Sarah 'Molly' ROCK. Five of David Walker SMITH's children married BASTINs.) -- Gary Bastin BASTIN-L List Administrator ATWELL-L List Administrator BASTIN Family Website http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/9714/

    1. Atwell & Houk
    2. Hello Gary and everyone. I hope that I might be able to add a bit to the story of John T. Atwell and Henry C Houk/Hawk. The 1850 Barren County census lists John and Sally Atwell along with their son Richard J. Also in the household were: Nancy L Williams, 17; Catherine Williams, 4; Henry C Houk, 2; and a newborn 5 day old Lucretia Atwell, born on August 20, 1850 if the census date is correct. John B Atwell, 20, is in a separate household nearby. Interestingly, Sarah "Sally" Houk's next oldest brother, William Samuel Houk (b 20 Sep 1810) had a son by his thrid wife, Cynthia Ann Dennison, named Henry Clay Houk, b 4 May 1848. Cynthia must have died in childbirth with little Henry C since William Samuel Houk married for a fourth time that October. All of this is recorded in the family bible which also contains information on some Hisers and some of my McCubbins. The bible also says that Henry Clay Houk married Perlina T Rhea on 6 May 1866 and also married Eliza Gooden, no date given. No location appears for either of the marriages. COuld be the same Henry C Houk/Hawk, but I have no evidence that he went to MO or that he stayed in KY. I'd love to hear more if anyone can supply it. Thanks, Mike Vance

Instead, I believe that he was probably a nephew, or other near relative, of Sarah 'Sallie' (HOUK) ATWELL. 1. ATWELL, JEWELL, NUNN, and BASTIN family/collateral lines
    2. Gary Bastin
    3. Greetings All, In going over some newly found information on the ATWELL, JEWELL, NUNN, and BASTIN family lines in South Central Kentucky, and additionally spending some time just re-looking at the 1840 US Census for Barren Co, KY and THINKING, I now recognize additional family connections and names! The Elizabeth Jewell listed on the 1840 US Census for Barren Co, KY is evidently Elizabeth (Hiser) Jewell, the widow of Robert Jewell. Elizabeth (Hiser) Jewell 1 male 5 and under 10 Years 1 male 15 and under 20 Years 1 female under 5 2 females 10 and under 15 1 female 40 and under 50 She is listed one household away from John BASTIN, son of Thomas and Hannah Bastin of Caswell Co, NC, and brother of Thomas Bastin Jr. Relatives of Thomas listed nearby (on the same page of the census, actually) include Wm. H. Nunn, John Johnson, Richard Atwell, James Jewell, Ann W. Carver, Major B. Bastin, Thomas Bastin, Jr., and James Robertson. John Bastin was a son of Thomas and Hannah Bastin of Caswell Co, NC. He and his second wife, Margaret Keath, who he had recently married in 1837, would move to Monroe Co, IN within just a couple of years of this census. Wm. H. Nunn was the husband of Hannah Bastin, daughter of Thomas Bastin, Jr and Mary W. (Atwell) Bastin. After Hannah's death (which was probably around 26 Dec 1844 - Jan 1845, perhaps while giving birth to Lucinda Katherine Nunn), he would marry Catherine Piper on 22 Dec 1845. His name appears in the descendant table listed below. John Johnson was the husband of Margaret 'Peggy' Bastin, daughter of Thomas Bastin, Jr and Mary W. (Atwell) Bastin. Richard Atwell was the husband of Martha B. 'Patsy' Bastin, daughter of Thomas Bastin, Jr and Mary W. (Atwell) Bastin. Richard Atwell and Martha were first cousins. Richard Atwell's parents were John 'Jack' Atwell, Jr. and ???. John 'Jack' Atwell, Jr. was a brother of Mary W. (Atwell) Bastin. James Jewell was the son of Elizabeth Jewell, and the husband of Margaret A. 'Peggy' Atwell, daughter of John 'Jack' Atwell, Jr. and ??? ???. John 'Jack' Atwell, Jr. was a brother of Mary W. (Atwell) Bastin. Ann W. Carver was the widow of Benjamin Flutcher Carver. She was Ann Wayson 'Nancy' (Bastin) Carver, daughter of Thomas Bastin, Jr and Mary W. (Atwell) Bastin. Major Brockman Bastin was a son of Thomas Bastin Jr and Mary W. (Atwell) Bastin. He and his wife Sarah Jane (Pointer) would move to Miami Co, KS in a few years. Thomas Bastin was Thomas Bastin Jr, son of Thomas and Hannah Bastin of Caswell Co, NC. James Robertson was the first husband of Milly Bastin. Milly was a sister to both Thomas Bastin Jr and John Bastin! It now appears that John, Thomas, and Milly may have come together to east Barren Co, KY. Both John and his family and Milly and her family would move to Indiana within a short time after this census. John evidently moved in about 1841-1842 to Monroe County, IN. Milly and her husband, James Robertson, may have also moved at the same time as John and his family. (Can anyone provide any information on this branch of the family? James Robertson obviously died after 1840. Yet, I know that Milly was also married to William Ables within another 10 years or so. When did James Robertson die, and where? What part of Indiana did Milly move to; was it Orange County, IN?) On the census is listed, under James Robertson 1 male of 15 and under 20 years (probably a son, but, perhaps a grandson?) 1 male of 60 and under 70 1 female of 60 and under 70 The more I study this one page of the census, the more it makes 'sense', or should that be 'census' :-) It seems that almost all of the families were related! (Note: The '5th' number on a date below refers to the footnote number. For example, 18344 actually means 1834, footnote 4, for example.) 1. Homer Atwill
    2. My wife recently inherited a family Bible, but the information is not as complete as we had hoped . I'm hoping that someone on this list can fill in some of the gaps. The first entry in the bible lists the marriage of Homer ATWILL to Mary GOODWIN 2-16-1840- we believe this occurred in New York state but no town is listed. My wife's great-grandfather is listed Charles David Atwell born 1-22-1861 in Peekskill NY.In October of 1890 he married Thankful Elizabeth BURGESS the daughter of Andrew Burgess and Agnes Osborn. Charles was a minister and at some point moved to Shreveport La. where he died 8-16-1932. Several of his children are listed in the bible; Gertrude, Gordon, Mildred, and Donald Burgess Atwell who my wife descends from. Donald was born 8-2-1896 in Elmira, NY. and eventually moved to ILL. We believe that the other children were born in New York but traveled to Louisiana. We are interested in info on Homer and Mary; any other children they may have had; more specific info on the birthplace of Gertrude, Gordon and Mildred; and more info on their children and grandchildren.

    1. New to List - Hatwell (Chelsea) and Atwell (Devon)
    2. Ray & Barbara Johnson
    3. As I'm new to the List. may I introduce my interests. My maternal grandmother was born a HATWELL, whose family lived in Chelsea since the early 1800s. The earliest name I have in London is an Andrew Shute HATWELL, who had children around 1801 onwards. I was surprised to find two Christian names as the family were, by all accounts, ordinary working folk. Remembering that my grandmother used to drop her "H"s, I wondered whether a clergyman may have done the reverse and added an H to the name ATWELL. Sure enough, there is an entry on the IGI for the baptism of ANDREW SHUTE ATWILL at Totnes on 23 Feb 1770. Only a mother - Julian - is shown. A few months later, an Andrew Shute married in the same church, but not to Julian Atwill (she later married John CONGDON in Dartmouth on 30 Mar 1777). Julian Atwill appears to have come from a line of Atwells at Rattery, Devon - she was baptised 1737, father Thomas. I would be delighted to hear from anyone researching (h)Atwells in either of these places. Ray Johnson Otley in Sleepy Suffolk

I have a Thomas Atwell (b. ca 1650) who married as possibly his 3rd wife Ann Lee Youell, widow of Thomas Youell. Ann Lee was the dau. of Richard Lee and Ann Constable. I think they had a daughter named Honor, but I don't descend from her. I descend from Mary Atwell dau. of Thomas Atwell and ______ ?, probably his first wife. Mary Atwell married Thomas Tanner. You see, that all of my Atwell material is very sketchy, so I have nothing firm and have stopped researching this line. Much of the material printed on these families is contradictory. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Joe Collins
