Does anyone have any connections or info on the following ATWELL family? Richard ATWELL b.abt 1790 in CT -m- Hannah Betsey (-----) b.abt 1790 in CT. They settled in Neversink, Sullivan Co, NY by 1840. Richard and Hannah had at least 4 children: 1.) (son) ATWELL b.bef 1820 in CT (see below) 2.) (daughter) ATWELL b.1820-1825 in CT 3.) Lucy ATWELL b.abt 1827 in CT 4.) Clark ATWELL b.abt 1830 in CT I don't yet have the name of son #1 above, but from the US census it looks like he had several children who were living with Richard in 1850: James ATWELL b. abt 1838 in NY John ATWELL b. abt 1840 in NY Silah ATWELL b.abt 1844 in NY Melissa ATWELL b.abt 1846 in NY There was also another relative living with Richard in the 1860 census: Alonzo Atwell b.abt 1848 in NY My hunch is that this Richard ATWELL is the same man who was living in Danbury, Fairfield Co, CT in the 1830 census, and possibly the same man living in Sherman, Fairfield Co, CT in the 1820 census. Any info appreciated! Dan Atwell
I've ever seen any mention of Pennsylvania Atwells in the ATWELL-L archives Does anyone have any info on Robert J. Atwell (1837/8 PA) who was in the 1870 census of Venango Co., PA; also said in family tradition to be from (adjoining) Butler Co., PA. There are many Atwell families in this area in 1860 and 1850, but there is no trace of this Robert in any of these Atwell households in 1860 or 1850. Perhaps Robert J. changed his first name or came to this area from eastern PA.. Robert 1st married Sarah J. -----; 2d, Elizabeth Andersosn ; migrated to Butler Co., KS and later to Lincoln Co., OK. Children were: Electra C., Cyrus D., Alexander D., Clyde L., Velenia, Imald J., Floy Zlota (b. Dec 1887.) Floy married Carlos Leander Stanfield. Hello, I am looking for my ancestor Laetitia Atwell, born in 1743 in Culpeper VA, or perhaps in Westomoreland County. Could she have been the child of Sarah and Francis? Do you have a Laetitia listed at all? She married John Lee, who was a cousin of Anne Lee who married Thomas Atwell, Francis' brother. This makes me think that perhaps Laetitia was descended from Francis and Sarah. She died in childbirth in 1775 a few days before the Revolutionary War broke out. Her only child Willis Atwell Lee is my 5th great grandfather. His father gave him to his brother Hancock Lee and went off to fight the War. He served with Washington at Valley Forge. Willis ended up doing fine, and he played a mean fiddle according to family legends. He was clerk for Thomas Todd, US Supreme Court Justice, who married Dolly Madison's sister, the first wedding in the White House. I would love to find Laetitia's ancestors. Thank you, Jan Howell Marx
Dr. Ingham: I ordered "The Genealogist" Fall 2000 issue and I received it today from Picton Press (www.pictonpress.com) It is Vol 14 No., 2 All I can say is terrific job!!! I went through my file and was able to correct and add much info, attributing your data of course. For all those out there who are desc of "Constable Benjamin Atwell of New London", get this edition!! Specifically finding Mary Roberts, spouse of Benjamin Atwell jr. in Colchester deeds. I must ask you if you have any additional details on Mary daughter of William Roberts of Colchester? On page 274, Caulkins mentions a man named William Roberts who died in 1657 (about 13 years before Mary would be born) who lived alone on the outskirts of New London. Also found a William Roberts who married Elizabeth Northam. This William would be the brother of Mary. Both would be the children of William Roberts and Eleanor ??? of Colchester. thanks and again great work! from a Benj. Atwell desc.: Benjamin Atwell and Mary ???
