    3. On the FamilyTreeMaker Passenger list Index, There are several Thomas Ashby's who sailed to America: 1635 to VA (maybe that 1599 Capt Thomas) 1691 to VA ('our' Thomas would have been about 11-probably too young to be sailing alone) 1703 to VA - 'ours' would have been about 23 possible? 1756 to America 1654-1663 to Barbados 1659 to Barbados 1669 to Maryland 1716 to Nevis (where is that?) 1640 to New Haven, CT 1670-1696 to SC (this Thomas is listed with parents John and Constantine) 1690 to VA 1743 to VA I'll throw in the rest of the Ashbys listed for anyone who wants. I can look them up on the index and it will tell me which book this pertains to if you like. Just let me know the name, place and year you want to know more about. 3. Glad to through a new twist into the Thomas Ashby line. (As if there weren't enough already!) Please help me look through this site. It's stuffed full of Old Colonial Virginia Documents. It isn't very easy to get around in it so it will take some time! http://familykinship.com/bookstoreknightgarter.htm I went here because someone looking into Letitia Ashby who married Thomas Neale said they had a note about Letitia saying her Bible had her family listed back into Bible times. I know that the English Royalty is traced back to Adam and Eve so I was looking at this Knight of the Garter site. If you go to 'Surnames', and then at the bottom of that page is 'Colonial Records' Go there and just start digging! Maybe we can find something new! I entered Thomas Ashby and went from there. Go Ashbys! Julia

    3. I'm looking at old colonial VA documents and wondering- Does anyone know who Captain John Ashby of the H.M.S. Rose was? He and Sir John Berry of H.M.S. Bristol convoyed to America with the command to put down Bacon's rebellion in Nov 1676. I wonder if any connection has been found. Also, I saw a Thomas Ashby b. abt 1599 of Aldgate, London. He too was a Captain involved with early VA colonization. Hmmmm Why did these Ashbys have to name all their sons either John or Thomas? Julia

    2. Hi Cousins, Last august during an exchange with Ann (below) we discussed the possibility that Thomas the son of John Jr. of Quinby SC was the one that went to VA based on Dr. TImothy Ashby's research. However notice the message below from Ann that indicates she found a record of that Thomas' death in Berkely Co SC which eliminates him as the one in VA. Patrick Anderson ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Subj: Ashby Date: 98-08-01 18:23:10 EDT From: aschulz@phoenix.net (Ann Schulz) To: patander73@aol.com Patrick, Just wanted to update you on the Ashby info. Thomas Ashby who was married to Eliz. LeJeau in SC (parish records) died in SC 1750 - will bk 6 St. Thomas Parish, Berkley Co., SC). The Va. Thomas d. 1752. I think this will eliminate Eliz LeJeau & Thomas Ashby from SC as being a part of the Va. Ashby family. ann +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    1. Re: Thomas Ashby
    2. Sue
    3. Hi Ann, Yes, there is some information being put on different web sites that say that, Thomas of SC is the same as Thomas of VA, who married Rose. It is said that the Thomas of SC was the son of John. The only Ashby's found in the very early period of SC (1670-80) was a John Ashby Sr and Jr. John Sr.'s wife was Elizabeth Thorowgood and John Jr.'s wife was Constantia ----, John had two daughter's also, named Jemima and Theodosia. John Jr. and his wife went back to Eng. about 1680. I don't know if they came back to VA or not. It is said that John had a son Thomas there also. (I spent two years at Salt Lake City looking in the old microfilms for SC and found no proof of it. If there is one, I sure would like to know the citation for it. I would love for it to be true, just tell me where to find the source !! Anyway, it is said that Thomas ( the purported son of John was married first to a Elizabeth Le Jeu and when she died, he moved to VA and married Rose (Berry?). The problem is that the marriage to Elizabeth Le Jeu took place in 172-- ( I think I'm recalling this date correctly but, whatever it was, I believe it was too late for it to have been our Thomas, anyway. The first son of Thomas and Rose was John b. abt 1707. Plus, according to at least one history book ( and don't ask me now which it was) says that Thomas Ashby was in VA by 1690. Now, there is a Thorowgood family in VA, a fairly well known one. The immigrant was Adam Thorowgood/Thorougood. So, there may be some truth to all of this. I have looked in some of the Thorowgood material trying to see some mention of any Ashby's and found none there. Of course, I'm sure I haven't looked in all the places and possible connections. But, I have been looking for many, many years. So, as I said, I want to believe, so somebody, Please Prove it to me. !! Well, I'll get off my soapbox now, please forgive ! Please don't think I'm directing any of this to you personally, hope I didn't make you think that. Just talking in general, to everyone. Just had to get that off my chest!... And to half way answer your question. No, I don't think Thomas was the immigrant. There were very early Ashby/Ashbie/Asbie/Asby's in the colonies. A John, & Edward/Edmond were here in the 1600's. Then there was a New England branch of the Ashby's (Nathaniel) that became Mormon and they help found Salt Lake City. So, our Thomas may have come from that branch, pre-1700. But, I may be wrong. Thomas May Be the immigrant. Just has never been proven one way or the other. Have I confused everyone enough, yet ? <VBG> Thanks, Sue Ann Schulz wrote: > > I am looking for the parents of Thomas Ashby who was married to Rose of > Va.
