For some reason, I missed getting Digests 39 and 40. Is there somewhere I can go to review them? Thank you very much. Jan in Virginia
Could someone please send me the name of the woman who wrote the two books titled, The Ashby Book. She was/is an Ashby. Thank you. Jan in Virginia mailto:hood@rica.net

Thanks Nellie, for the URL. It's a super place to do research. I was there this spring. Wished I coud have stayed longer. I discovered one thing about it though. All these years I had been told that the archives had all the early records from the county. Not true! I had to go to the county courthouse to get a marriage record, dated 1795. So check before you go all the way to Richmond for something, that may be at the court house level. Thanks for the good info., William Something else folks may not know about the SS index.. If you cannot find your people on the Soc. Sec. death index. They may not have been on Soc. Sec. because they were farmers, teachers, railroad workers, military etc., especially before the 1950's when those occupations did not pay into the Social Security fund. Some of these occupations had their own pensions and were not eligible. NOT farmers, though and that is one of the reasons for social security being started. Also, some people never did file for pensions, or whose deaths were never filed, for whatever reasons and aren't on the the list. ( for instance, deaths in a foreign country are not on the list, in some cases.) The rest of the story is that the Soc. Sec. death index uses only one name for the person. I have found first names, middle names and even nicknames, used. I even found one of my uncles with the wrong death date. SO... use these records the same way you would any other secondary source, VERIFY, VERIFY, VERIFY. They are good as far as they go. Just a little cheery note, to start your Monday morning <VBG> Sue

Seems, that Mollie Fletcher was married to an Ashby and her brothers were Tom and Elbert Fletcher. They were in Williamson Co., Ill. But, not found in the 1870 census for that county. Sue
Does anyone have any information on a Mollie Fletcher Ashby, who had brothers Tom and Elbert, one of which was born in 1870 in S. Illinois. If anyone does know anything about this family would you reply to a lady, that didn't want to sub to the list ?? Her address is: "Deb D" <debd44@hotmail.com> Thanks, Sue Ashby
I know there is alot of confusion on this family. But do we have proof as to the parents of Thomas Ashby 1726-1783 who was married to Mary Ann McCullough in 1738. I have seen him connected to the following over the web Robert b. 1695 who married Elizabeth Botts and connected to Capt Thomas b. 1694. Help me please. :)pam

I thought I had run the spell check on the last post, but, evidently, it dropped out. The name of John Ashby Jr's wife is correctly spelled Constantia. Also, of course is wasn't Dondon that John Sr. went back to but, London. Please excuse the other errors in spelling. Sue
Hello Sue, Tou have the wife of John ASHBY, Jr. listed as Constasntia, should this be Constantina? Thank you, Anne W. Bradshaw Musser Muss@worldnet.att.net Fax: 603 - 849 - 0411
Hi All, ( this is a long one, so hang on) I've been trying to locate all my scattered sources and citations on old Thomas. Haven't found all of them yet, So, if some of you have anything to support or discredit my info. Please, do so (but, please cite your sources) First, of all Jane McBroom sent me a query that said she had two marriages for Thomas Ashby, of VA. One to an Elizabeth La Jeau and the other to Rose Berry. This is to help her and others that may have this wrong info. These are two DIFFERENT Thomas Ashbys. PROOF: The first citation is from a book, but I have also looked at the microfilm of the original documents and the book is correct, in this case. <G> Agnes Leland Baldwin: FIRST SETTLERS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1670-1700 Pg. 6 " JOHN ASHBY, Sr., (Gentleman, Cacique, Merchant) Arrived before 17 November 1680 from London, England. But, we know our Thomas died in VA, so it can't be he. One of them MAY be the husband of the Magdalene, listed above. NEXT ! This from Ann Schulz in TX: Just wanted to update you on the Ashby info. Thomas Ashby who was married to Eliz. LeJeau in SC (parish records) DIED IN SC 1750 - WILL BK 6 St. Thomas Parish, Berkley Co., SC). THE VA THOMAS DIED IN 1752 I think this will eliminate Eliz LeJeau & Thomas Ashby from SC as being a part of the Va. Ashby family. So, here it is. These Thomas Ashbys' are not the same man. There probably is some connection back in England. But, who knows? I hope this will clear up the confusion and speading of misinformation. The other point I want to make it this. There has never been any PROOF of Rose, the wife of Thomas, being a BERRY. That is conjecture, because of his mention in his will of "cousins" Ruebin and Elizabeth? BERRY. Now, there was a lot of casual uses of the term 'cousin' in the colonial time period (probably because there was so much intermarriage that is was true <VBG>) However, if they were 'true' cousins, the Berrys would have been Thomas' Aunt or Uncles' children. If they weren't cousins, in the true meaning, today. Then they could have been merely good friends. So, unless someone has some definite proof ( would really love to see it), then we can't say Rose was a Berry. I put it in my gen. programs with an asterisk beside the name, to show, that it is not proven. NOW, after having been so negative, let me post some positive. There are many Ashby's in the Bermuda, Antiqua, Bahama, etc. records, during the colonial period. I have high hopes that someday, we can make the connection. So, many of the VA planters, did come to VA from these islands. So, don't give up. There are more and more records being extracted and opened up for us. Just a few years ago. there was a whole book of marriages found for a county in AL. that had been ekpt for a generation or longer in a person's home. My family's marriages were in it. Support Rootsweb, with you time and donations, (since it is volunteer) and perhaps, someone will find our proof.
