    1. Re: Ashby Data
    2. Sue, thanks so much for that information. I understand that there were planters named Ashby in both Nevis and Barbados during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. In fact, there is an "Ashby's Fort" in Nevis. Our Thomas may indeed have been the son of a 17th century transportee named John Ashby--if so, he seems to have come up in the world very quickly, for a commission in the Orange Militia is not cheap; nor is the land he bought himself in Stafford. Of course, Thomas' father could also have been transported as a POW from the English Civil War or the Monmouth Rebellion (there are still descendants of these transportees in the West Indies). Next question: is there an online source for marriages in the Caribbean in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries? we could paw through them and see if one of the Ashby fellows named Thomas married a girl named Rose anywhere in the Islands. ~Andy

    3. Hi List It's time to get this list working again. I've found some data on the Ashby in immigration lists that some might find useful. The source is: "The Complete Book of Immigrants, 1607-1776" - Peter Coldham 28 Sept. 1658 - John Ashby bound to ---- Daniell, to serve 4 years in Virginia. 20 May, 1659 - Thomas Ashby of Hopton, Salop, sawyer, bound to William Hammond to serve 4 years in Barbados. (Could this be our Thomas ?) 17 Dec., 1662 - Apprenticed in Bristol: Ann Jones to George AShby, 4 years, Nevis. 2 Sept. 1660 - John Combes, yeoman, bound to George Ashby, mariner, to serve 4 years in Va. 3. Hi, I believe we are distantly related. I am descended through Fielding Ashby whose father I believe was David Ashby. David's father was John Ashby and Jean Coombs. I have very little on your line but do list a Lewis Ashby born to Edward and Margaret on May 15, 1803. However I don't know where I got this info to know if it is accurate. Also I show Margaret as remarrying a William Clark on June 15, 1809. This would go along with your Edward's death date of 1806. I'll look thru my stuff to see why I think Lewis is Edward's son. Also of note Fielding was born in Frederick County, Va and served in the Revolution so there is much on his official record (except a confirmation of his parents' names of course). Fielding spent a lot of his adult life in Jefferson County and Oldham County. From there some of the family wandered off to Monroe County MO with parts of another line of my family. Do you have anything on this line? Barbara

    3. Hello list, I've just been given a copy of a marriage bond for a John R. Ashby to a Diana Johnson, dated 21 May, 1849, in Boyle Co., KY. Diana's guardian was A. H. Parish. In 1850, I find no Ashby/Ashly/Ashley in Boyle Co. However, I find two John Ashby/Ashly's in Mercer Co., (the parent of Boyle Co.) And, wouldn't you know it, both of them are married to a Diana. I believe one of them is the son of Uriah Ashby, age 46, who is on the same page and old enough to be the father of this John, age 24. This John has a 6 month old daughter, Susan. The other John has a daughter, Mary, age 1 and he is 22 years old. I think that this John and Diana may be the ancestor of my husband. But, if he is the same as the one on the marriage bond, then they had the daughter "pretty quick" <g>, for her to be a year old in 1850. Does anyone on the list have a clue about these people? Please respond to the list, if you do. BTW: MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS, TO YOU ALL & HAPPIEST OF NEW YEARS!!! Sue Ashby, your listowner

Three of Thomas and Nancy's sons were Andrew Jackson, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington Ashby. They were in the West Virginia Calvary and Army during the Civil War. Thomas father was in the War of 1812 he served under Harrison and participated in his march to Fort Meigs. Can anyone tell me who Thomas's father was? Has anyone found Thomas and Nancy's Gaskin Ashby marriage date? I think her father was Jessie Gaskin. Thanks Jean Logston Tampa, Florida

State Archives 185 West State St. CN307 Trenton, NJ 08625 and requested a copy of ASHBY, WILLIAM 16983G Inv. 1870 They sent me a form and asked for a fee of $3.00. That was in 1989, so I am sure the price has gone up, but it is a certified copy. This is NOT a will, only an inventory of his household goods. I will need a mailing address to send the copies. Joey

    1. Re: Tinson Ashby
    2. Hi Andy, Maybe I can help here. According to the will of Tinson Ashby, dated December 25, 1822, and recorded August, 1823 in Shelby Co., Kentucky, Stinson left the following sons: Benjamin C.; John S.; and his three youngest sons, James C.; Tinson C.; and Thadeus C. S. C. Ashby. Presumably Benjamin and John are the children of Tinson's first wife, as he gives to them the land left by Benjamin Cooper to my wife, Nancy. He leaves the rest of his property to his wife Sally, for his three youngest sons. I'm not sure what connection you are trying to make but if it is a connection between Stinson K. Ashby, b. about 1810 to Tinson Ashby, it wouldn't seem to fit for two reasons. First, from the will above, it would appear that Tinson's son was Tinson C. Ashby, not Stinson K. Second, the Tinson, Jr. was apparently the child of his second wife, Sally. Tinson Sr. and Sally were married in Shelby Co. on October 31, 1816, so I presume that Tinson C. Ashby was born after this date. Hope this is helpful. Rochelle
