Greetings Yell County! Thank you, to all the people who have responded to my recent postings on the GenConnect board concerning the Westmoreland and Tucker families. I thought I had already subscribed to the Yell Co. list and didn't realise I hadn't until I got Faye Sandy's message. That minor error has been corrected as you can see by this post. With the indulgence of the list, I'd like to clarify the situation concerning Alberty Westmoreland. First, I am not (at least not to me knowledge) a descendant of the Tucker family. My connection comes through the Westmorelands. The Alberty Westmoreland, b. 1808 SC, on the 1860 and 1870 Yell Co., AR census was a brother to my ggg-grandmother, Catherine Westmoreland Harris Walker Gallion (1804-ca. 1881). I've been trying to locate descendants of Uncle Alberty. Here's a brief outline of what I know (or surmise) based on census records (Thanks Mary Leek and Faye Sandy for the additional census readings). Alberty Westmoreland was born in Spartanburg Dist. SC about 1808, the son? of William and Sary Alberty Westmoreland. He moved with father and family to Catawba Co., AL in the summer of 1822 and then to Lauderdale Co., AL in the fall of 1822. I've not been able to find a marriage record for him, but from the estate settlement of the Michael Wilson (d. 1836) estate Wayne Co., TN, I know that Alberty had married to Mary Wilson, dau. of Michael, about 1830. (still haven't determined if Alberty and Mary are the Moses A. Westmoreland listed on the 1830 Wayne Co., TN census or if Moses was Alberty's brother). In 1840 I believe Alberty and family were living in Fayette Co., TN. By 1844 they were in Independence Co., AR (per a deed where Alberty and Mary sold their interest in the Michael Wilson estate). Sometime between 1844 and 1849, Mary Wilson Westmoreland died, probably in Ruddell Twp., Independence Co., AR. I searched for a tombstone some 25 years ago, but never found her burial place. On 11 July 1849, Alberty Westmoreland (age 42) married Martha Turrell (age 23), in Independence Co., AR. In the 1850 Independence Co., AR census, Alberty is listed in Ruddell Twp, household #1038, with 6 children but no wife. From information that Faye Sandy sent, it would appear that Martha Turrell Westmoreland was living with her parents? Oren and Nancy Terrell in 1850. This might indicate that Alberty and Martha had separated, and that may well be true. But in January 1853, Alberty and Martha, his wife, sold 160 acres of land in Independence Co., AR (SE qtr, sec. 23, T 11 N, R 4 W) to Jacob H. Coffman for $250.00. Both Martha and Alberty signed the deed (Martha with a "X". which was witnessed). Alberty appears on the 1860 Yell Co., AR census living in Chickalah Twp with wife Sarah, age 35, b. MS and a house full of children. In 1870 Yell Co., Chickalah Twp, Alberty is still listed with wife Sarah. Don't know if Sarah is Martha or if Sarah was Uncle Alberty's third wife. Have not found, so far, any additional marriages for him. But the arrangement of the children on the census records would indicate that there were THREE wives, Sarah being the third. Alberty Westmoreland appears to have had 15 or more children. Here's how I have them enumerated: 1. Amanda E. Westmoreland, b. ca. 1834, Wayne Co. TN, m. Isaac Robinson 8 July 1852, Independence Co., AR, d. bef. 1853. 2. Levi L. Westmoreland, b. 1836, TN 3. Lidda Margaret Westmoreland, b. 1838 TN, m. 6 Feb 1868 Yell Co., AR to James TOWNSEL. 4. Nancy J. Westmoreland, b. 1840 5. Lincy Catherine Westmoreland, b. 1842 AR 6. Moses B. Westmoreland, b. 1845, AR, m. 1 Nov 1866 Yell Co., AR to Julia C. HARKEY. Living in Johnson Co., AR in 1870 and in Logan Co., AR in 1900. 7. Samuel D. Westmoreland, b. 1847 AR (not listed on 1850 census) 8. Elizabeth Ann Westmoreland, b. Dec. 1849/Jan 1850 (11 in 1860)(listed with mother Martha Terrell/Turrell Westmoreland in the Terrell Household in 1850, age 6/12). 9. Matilda Westmoreland, b. 1851 10. William Westmoreland, b. 1854 11. Martha Westmorealnd, b. 1857 12. Susan Angeline Westmoreland, b. Dec? 1859 13. Lucinda Westmoreland, b. 1862 14. Mary Westmoreland, b. 1864/5 15. Ellen Westmoreland, b. 1868/9. There could be another daughter, Sarah, b. 1832, which would fit with the 1840 census, although cannot be certain of that. A Sarah Westmoreland, age 18 was living in the household of Minerva Tucker, age 31, b. TN, in Jackson Co., Ar in 1850 (Thanks Faye for that information). It is possible that Sarah was the eldest daughter and was named for her grandmother, Sarah (Sary) Alberty Westmoreland, who died about 1831/2, Lauderdale Co. AL. It was the Sarah Westmoreland, b. 1832 we think married Paul Tucker about 1854/5 somewhere in Arkansas. Could they have married in Jackson Co., AR????? I'm sorry this message is so long, but this was a BIG family. Ya'll have been a great help on this family. If anyone is interested in the ancestors of Alberty Westmoreland and his first wife, Mary Wilson, I do have some of that information. And I'm still digging for information on Alberty's descendants.
