Mike, I too traveled from Texas to Moore's Hill Cemetery this month and had not seen it before. It was the most amazing cemetery I have ever seen!!! The bulldozer was parked there and the clearing was being done, we took the NEWLY graded road up the steep hill to the cemetery and I tell you the truth, we were in a full size van and we hung off the new road on the side of the hill and it was an experience....we just drove on back down and didn't get out to view the gravesites. This cemetery reminds me of Indian Mounds I have worked on in my Archelogy work here in the Dallas area. I agree with you, and wish I had seen it in it's original setting. The old "Hugh Johnson" or Samuel Johnson line also Balch mother, originally owned a good part of this land in the area and still do today. My ancestor also had land that ran almost up to the cemetery on the SE all the way back across the highway. Which he patented in 1841...Radford Greenwood. This is all OLD PROSPERITY...right?! I am looking for information on Elijah Henry STAFFORD who, with his wife Mary E., moved to Yell County from TN about 1879. Children's names were: 1) William Henry b. ca. 1859 2) M. Louisa, b. ca. 1868, married H.B. DOWDY, Yell Co., Dec 1882 3) J. Thomas, b. ca1872, married M. R. CHRISTIE, Yell Co., Feb 1893 4) America Ellen, b. Nov 1872, married John W. CHRISTIAN, Oct 1895 5) Sarah Lavina "Vee", b. Jan 1875, married Henry Ed McGUIRE, Yell Co., Dec.1893 6) Lilly Mae, b. May 1879, married (1)Truly Grief GEORGE, Yell Co., Dec. 1893 m. (2) W.H.COLLINS, Aug 1922, Yell Co. 7) E. Pinkney, b. ca 1880 8) Clara M.B., b. May 1882, married James F. McGUIRE, Yell Co., Apr 1899 9) Pearlie Clyde, b. May 1890 I would be most grateful for ANY information on any of these families. The 2 sisters that married 2 McGuire brothers moved to Hughes Co., OK sometime between 1910 and 1920. The Staffords lived on Chichala Mt.,I believe. They are still listed on the 1920 Yell Co. census, but have no ideas about death dates. Elijah Henry, known as Henry, was a minister and farmer; I noticed his name as the minister performing many marriages in Yell County. Does anyone have any ideas about what church or denomination?
Moore's Hill Cemetery (located off CR52 between Ard and Dardanelle), besides being important to me personally, is special, due in no small part to its beautiful setting atop its namesake, which is elevated a couple of hundred feet above the surrounding countryside. Unfortunately, it's remote location was favored by teenagers who drank, partied, and worst of all, committed vandalism. Several years ago there was major damage, a great deal of it irreparable, because of vandals. However, what I saw yesterday while visiting, upsets me as much as the vandalism. All of the surrounding farmland is being cleared and leveled by bulldozer. The sides of the Hill itself, up to where the cemetery begins, have been cleared. The dozer even dug away a sizable chunk of the Hill along CR52, as it appears they intend to widen the road. Not living in the area, I don't know what transpired as far as obtaining permission to do this. And yes, I do believe in individual rights. But to me, this is a travesty of all things decent and a disaster to those who appreciated the beautiful, secluded cemetery. I don't know who is doing the work. If anyone else feels as I do, perhaps we could find out and deluge them with letters of concern about the sanctity of the cemetery. Mike Earls Baytown, Texas

Hi Listmembers -- I would like to request a marriage lookup for Joseph Wesley Carlock to Dora Adaline ? or anyone else. The years would be between 1900 - 1910 maybe 1908. The most likely counties are Conway, Pope & Yell but any county around these is a possibility. I would really like to determine if there was a fourth marriage that I have overlooked. I received a death certificate that is not mine. Hazel R Booth born 7/6/1885 in Selma Tenn d 1/13/1933 in Searcy White county. If someone can prove relationship to her I will send the death certificate to them. Thanks to all of you for your help.
