Gary Telford Family Roots Descendants of Fielding Price Generation No. 1 1. FIELDING11 PRICE (RUSSELL10, JOSEPH9, CHARLES8, DANIEL JR.7, DANIEL SR.6, JOHN JR.5, JOHN SR.4, RICHARD (III)3, RICHARD2, RICHARD1) was born 1818 in Thickety Creek, Spartanburg District, SC, and died February 01, 1865 in Yankee Prison, "Rebel's Hell" Little Rock, AR Buried Unmarked Grave. He married MARY MARTHA "POLLY" GUTHRIE November 19, 1837 in White Co., AR Marriage Records* Book A 1836-1858, daughter of JOSEPH GUTHRIE and SUSANNAH WOOD. Notes for FIELDING PRICE: Fielding Price Story It's easier to learn more about the deceased, sometimes, than about those who are alive. I received an inquiry the other day asking for help in researching information on the Fielding Price family of White County. Fielding was the inquirer's great grandmother's (Mary Ann Loyd) grandfather. He was her guardian due to the fact that her mother had died in childbirth. His family had floated the White River into Arkansas in 1835 having originated in South Carolina. Fielding's widow and family were left in terrible conditions after the war. The inquirer wrote that Fielding Price died February 1, 1865, in the Yankee prison in Little Rock, according to Rebel's Hell and the national archives information. Fielding's brother, Frederick, was a first Lieutenant with General Sterling Price who had ridden by Fielding's home place asking for fresh horses apparently after their raids into Kansas. Apparently these men under Fielding's leadership sat out to connect up with Gen. Price but were unable to do so. There were four men with Price, that survived, who could have descendants that may be living in your area. I am interested in information about the descendants of those men, she wrote. She is in hopes they may have handed down information regarding this incident. Fielding Price of White County, according to the inquirer, was taken prisoner by the Union forces in Woodruff County near Augusta. He was picked up by the 61st Illinois on patrol from DeVall's Bluff. In the Rebel's Hell, published in 1993, it lists Lt. Fielding Price of White County; Lt. J. Pemberton; Lt. A.W. Jones; Pvt. Wm. Tatum; Pvt. John Forsuth and Pvt. Wiley Dunn. They were sent to the Union Prison in Little Rock and they are listed as being admitted November 26, 1964. Fielding Price died February 1, 1865 of variola (smallpox). Forsuth died of the same on May 10, 1865; Pemberton, Jones, Tatum and Dunn took the oath May 7, 1865 to be released. Of all these men, Pemberton said only that he was with Davis County. Jones said he was with First Arkansas Rifles and everyone else is listed a unassigned. Pemberton signed the papers for Fielding Prices widow, Mary, called "Polly," to receive a one-time payment of $25 in 1897. Mary "Polly" Price said he was with the 1st in Arkansas. I had information on Price's family tree. I'm sure she didn't know about all of his ancestors and descendants. The inquirer also wanted information on Sam Davis, who was a member of Coleman's Scouts who, she said, was captured November 20, 1862 near Minor Hill and believed to be a spy. He was murdered November 27, 1863. The sons of Confederate Veterans authorized a posthumous medal of honor, the first was awarded in honor of Sam Davis. I have researched three books and I have found nothing out about Sam Davis of Minor Hill. But if anyone knows anything about any of the above subjects, I would appreciate being contacted in order to document the information and in order to pass it along. © 2004 William Gary Telford, Family Roots Genealogy Research, P.
