James Polk House was a successful merchant in Augusta, Woodruff Co., AR. He believed to be successful in any calling in life a man must be honest, industrious and savings, and with these essential qualities he could not fail to accumulate property, and at the same time hold the respect and esteem of his fellow man. James P. House was originally from Hardeman County, Tennessee, and was the son of Archibald Bedwell House, born 1822 in Maury Co., TN, and Elizabeth "Eliza" (Wilkes) House, born about 1823 in Tennessee, a daughter of Thomas and Ruth Wilkes. Archibald and Elizabeth were married November 21, 1840 in Hardeman Co., TN. Archibald was a planter, who later resided at West Point, White County, Arkansas. Elizabeth died after 1884 and is buried in West Point Cemetery, West Point, White Co., AR. Archibald and Elizabeth were the parents of five known children; (1) Alcy, (2) Mary, (3) Thomas, born about 1842, (4) Col. Joseph Warren, born June 12, 1847, and (5) James Polk ! House, born March 14, 1850. This is a great story, full of genealogy information on the House family, their ancestors and desendants.
