I need someone to locate information on the Shivers family of Woodruff County. Roderick James Powell Shivers died in 1852 in Augusta, Woodruff County. He was the Sheriff of Shelby County, Tn and listed as a Regulator in Arkansas and Slave Runner. His wife also died there 1 yr prior to his death in 1851 and this is somewhat a mystery. Did his wife die that Tennesseans knew, or was it one of his "Guardian Children" that was incorrectly listed. Either Amy Caroline Shivers, or Nancy Caroline Williams would be the listing I am looking for and RJP's info. Roderick is buried in Hardeman County, but his wife has yet to be located in any Tennessee burial ground. So are there any early burial records that exist listing "ANY" Shivers burials in Woodruff County ? People I can not stress enough how important these two pieces of data are to understanding and unraveling a large part of even your messed up history. There was a large cover-up of informaiton in Woodruff County and some very shady things going on. Data does not match up and the last place that any sanity existed was in Woodruff County in 1851. The Gregory family ended up with the Shivers property and slaves due to the marriage of Evelina Permelia Shivers to Tillman Gregory. This would have been property that originally belonged to Thomas Shivers 1780, Benjamin Shivers 1820, RJP,Shadrick,Jesse and John Shivers 1852. Other related families would have been the famous William Thomas Jackson who married Margarette Almeta Shivers and lived in St Francis County, Ar after moving from Nagadoches, La upon inheritence of other mysterious properties not accounted for yet in anyof the wills or estate settlements. I am willing to defray your costs for any copies of archived documents you can supply to me. Transcriptions are worthless in my document archive but I would be willing to collect those also. I don't have any other information on the parents of Adaline or the mother of Custis Fleetwood, Narcisus Urbana Eleanor Rice. I do know that Narcissa was born May 4, 1852 in Douglas, MO and died July 26, 1934, death place unknown but probably Missouri. You should be able to obtain a death certificate on her from the state of Missouri which will usually give her parents name and other info. such as, cause of death, and where she was buried. Francis Marion "Tie" Fleetwood was born March 3, 1852 in Ozark, MO. and died June 5, 1933. The same info. as above on him. In regards to an Augusta paper for that time period here is what I have: Woodruff County Free Press, Augusta Advocate The Free Press was established in Augusta in 1892. In 1906 it was purchased by J. Ross Chambers who operated the weekly for a number of years. In 1921 it was sold to C.O. Wahlquist and the name was changed to the Woodruff County Free Press. In 1924 it was purcahsed by Lewis M. Layer who changed the name to the Augusta Advocate. Layer was the editor and publisher of the Advocate until 1929 when H.V. Alexander assumed the two positions. In 1930 Mr. Laura Davis Fitzhugh and her son, Davis Fitzhugh, purchased the paper; Davis Fitzhugh became editor and publisher. After operating the paper a few years the Fitzhughs leased it successively to Fred L. Hedges (1935-36), Arthur Wilson (1937), and Randall Ford (1937-38). In 1938 Fitzhugh sold the Advocate to Edwin Tillery; the next year E.B. O'Bryant was listed as editor and publisher. In 1940-41 Artie Peffley was the publisher; he was succeeded by his son-in-law, David G. Griffin. Griffith edited the Augusta Advocate for 15 years, selling in 1956 to Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Tyson, former editors of the Atkins Chronicle. LeRoy Tyson was editor and publisher of the Advocate until June 1, 1959, when it was sold to Star-Progress, Inc., of Wynne. The next year Tyson returned as editor and manager of the Advocate for Star-Progress. In 1961, Harlan V. Walker withdrew from Star-Progress and took with him the Augusta Advocate, the Cotton Plant Democrat, and the McCrory Leader, all of which he printed at his McCrory plant. Walker was editor and publisher of the Advocate until February 27, 1967, when it was sold to R.E. and Mary B. Dickson of Dickson Printing Do., Inc., McCrory. The Woodruff County Monitor was established on October 1, 1990. The MONITOR purchased the McCrory Leader and the Augusta Advocate on May 11, 1995. The Leader was established in December 1923. In 1988 it consolidated with the Cotton Plant Democrat. The Augusta Advocate, established in 1858, was the successor to the Woodruff Free Press, the Augusta Vidette and the Sentinel. Paula Barnett is the Monitor's publisher and manager. The Woodruff County Monitor is rapidly becoming the most popular newspaper in the state of Arkansas for it's genealogy information. The paper publishes obituaries, wedding announcements, birth announcements, birthday celebrations, family reunions as well as anniveraries that are celebrated and other sources of genealogy interest.Gary Telford, Family Roots columnist, has a weekly column entitled "Family Roots" which tells the history all of the old families who have lived and died in Woodruff County and also the history of Woodruff County. Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AW.2ADE/788 Message Board Post: Chappell, McCrory Pioneer, dies at 102 Richard Cabot David Chappell, resident and pioneer of McCrory, died October 15, 2003 at his residence at 311 North Fakes in McCrory. He was 102 and died after a long productive life. Services were held October 18, at the McCrory Civic Center in McCrory with Rev. Steven Waggoner officiating. Interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Following the services, Barker's Cafe catered a luncheon-reception at the McCrory Civic Center in Mr. Chappell's honor. Thompson-Wilson Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements. Mr. Chappell was born in the Chappell Grove Community near McCrory on July 9, 1901, son of the late Sebastian Cabot and Mollie Johnson Chappell. He graduated form McCrory High School in 1921, one of only seven students in his class of which he was the oldest. All of his classmates preceded him in death. With only $6.50 and a lot of determination, Mr. Chappell, a mere 20 years of age, established Chappell's Drug Store. He had taken some training at the University of Arkansas to become a druggist. In September of 1929, Mr. Richard met Miss Velma Scallion, a junior high school teacher at Laura Conner School in Augusta. They were married May 20, 1931 with no money left after paying the preacher. A house was built for them by Vance Thompson and they were allowed to pay for it "as they could." There was never a mortgage or any papers signed, they were just trusted. They lived in that house all their married life and that is where Mr. Richard was when he was called to be with Mrs. Velma in their new home. Mr. Chappell's brother worked with him in the drug store, and this allowed him to take a job as county and probate clerk in 1931 with Mrs. Velma as his deputy. Six years later, Mrs. Velma was elected county treasurer and he was her deputy. After 10 years in county government, they came back to McCrory, he at the drug store and she at McCrory Junior High as a teacher. The couple did many things for the town of McCrory and Woodruff County. They were instrumental in the building of the McCrory Clinic and the construction of the building that houses Fred's Dollar Store. When Mrs. Annie Sue Ridgeway donated the old Pete Dobbs Grocery Store Building to the city, it was mostly Mr. Chappell's money that paid for the renovation. The Chappells were named 1997 Citizens of the Year, and July 9, was proclaimed Richard Chappell Day in 1999. Mr. Richard danced a few dances and celebrated with friends this past July on his 102nd birthday. Survivors are two nephews, Elwood Reynolds and R.C. Reynolds, both of McCrory; two nieces, Betty Scott of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Fayrene Bowen of Cherokee Village, as well as his extended family, neighbors, friends and his wonderful care giver. Casket bearers were Craig Reeves, Ellis Reeves, Aaron Chappell, Donald Chappell, Woody Renolds and Barry Alumbaugh. The family requests memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, % Rev.
