    3. I am wondering about a place and if it is still there . Porter liquor store . If you live in McCrory. Is it still there ? Does anyone know if Porters still live in McCrory? My grandfather lived in McCrory in the 1910 census with his son Jack Porter and wife Emma. His name is James Milford Randell Porter. On the census he lived on Edmonds avenue next to Porter Best and his family. Does anyone know where that street is. I cant find it on a regular map.His brother was Andrew Jackson Porter was a preacher there and he is buried in Fakes cemetery. I do not know where J.M.R. Porter is buried. Sincerely, Donna Porter Davis

Quite a few Thorntons lived around the Tupelo area and I have been trying to find information on George Leon Thornton and brother, F.M.(Roan or Merinie) Thronton. They married sisters Sally and Lillie Brazealle. George and Lillie had daughters Annie and Bessie. Do you have any Thorntons in your records particularly these two men. They had several brothers and sisters. I have some information but have run into a brick wall with these two. Some of them were in Jackson Co and some I think in Woodruff. Thanks. Nathaniel Burdine (son) is the person telling us that Elizabeth was a Fesperman/Vesterman. 2 of the Winchester children (one being my GGgrandmother) tells us they were born and raised in Calhoun Co. These probates include original letters of debtors, inventory, affidavits, and newspaper notices of pending actions. It is about the history of the county and history of the families who have lived and died here. I looked in the cemetery records for the names you mentioned and did not find them. These records are up to 1976, so if any have died since that date they will not be listed. If you could provide some dates for each I will see what else I can find for you. Regarding the sawmills that were operating at that time, I can probably get that information for you also in the next few days. Regarding your other query wanting to obtain a copy of the cemetery records, I don't know who has these now or if they are still available. The historical society is no longer active or meeting to my knowledge. If you need a look-up on someone in the records who died prior to 1976 I will be glad to do a look-up for you. I am publishing the greatest "Tribute to the War Veterans of Woodruff County, AR that has ever been published in a newspaper in the state of Arkansas to my knowledge. I am starting with the War of 1812 and coming forward to the Civil War in this weeks issue. Next week will be WW I and WW II War Veterans with a lot of genealogy information. The following week will be the Veterans in the Korea and Vietnam wars. I don't know where you live or if you already subscribe to our paper, but be sure you don't miss this if any of your family served in these wars from Woodruff County. 3. The following information is taken from a book written by Adelia Huenefeld Kittrell entitled, "History of Point Township in Wooduff County" Page 249. SHIVER - Roderick James Powell Shivers moved to Arkansas in 1850 from Shelby County Tennessee, settling in what is now Point Township, where he had earlier purchased land. His wife, Nancy Caroline Shivers, died during the first year the family was in Arkansas, leaving three children, a son and two daughters: James Norborn Shivers, born October 23, 1844; Nancy Charlotte Shivers, born in 1847; and Repsey Shivers, born 1849. Roderick James Powell Shivers died in November of 1852. His brother, Jesse Marklin Shivers was the administrator, as were his sisters. Roderick James Powell Shivers was a son of James Marklin and Repsey (Powell) Shivers. The father had been born near Lucy in Shelby County, Tennessee. After the death of his parents,James Norborn Shivers was placed in the care of his paternal grandparents, who were living in Hardeman County, Tennessee, as were his sisters. This information is also on page 249 Autobiography by James Shivers I (James Norborn Shivers) was born October 23rd 1844 about five miles northeast of Raleigh, Shelby County, Tennessee. About 1850 my father, Roderick James Powell Shivers, moved to Arkansas near Augusta. The first year my mother died and the next year my father died, leaving me and two sisters, I was placed with my grandparents in Hardeman County Tennessee, and was raised to the age of sixteen near Bolivia. I was sixteen when the Civil War clouds began to look dark. In April 1861 I went in the Confederate Army in the Pillow Guards (Company B, 4th Tennessee Infantry), under Captain (afterwards General) B.P. Neely, the first company leaving Bolivia. The regiment was organized in Germantown, Tennessee, where I was sworn in the 15th day of May. The company was in Missouri and Kentucky and went from there to Shiloh. I was in charge that captured McCalister's Battery and was wounded about thirty minutes after the capture, Being crippled for life (as was thought), I was discharged from my old Company B. 4th Tennessee Infantry and came home, but I could not be satisfied, I tried to go to school but the Yankees took my horse from me the first day. I went without a crutch, (these were the first Federal soldiers I had ever met on easy terms.) I had another horse, and knowing where Captain McSpadden's Company was, I went to join his company, but I had a heel on my wounded foot about three inches high and the wound had not healed up. I was advised not to be sworn in so if I could not stand it, I could quit without so much red tape. I had server, sworn in May 15, 1861, discharged July 19th 1862, and had received two months pay so it mattered not about the money. I was with McSpadden's Company of Scouts, Forrest's Calvary until the captain died.. I was placed on detached service and sent home with the captain's horse and effects. I did not have to go back, being still a cripple until the end of the war. I am still a Rebel. So it is but not far away from home, but not long before the bugle will call. I was married the first time to Miss Clara Andrews, daughter of Warren A. Andrews, June 18th 1866. By her I had 13 children, 7 boys and 6 girls. She died February 28, 1889. I married a second time in May 1891 to Mrs. Virginia A. Bennet Gruber, by whom I had born 4 girls and 2 boys. I hope this information is helpful to you.
