Steven is listed as 45 on the census, born in 1835 in Tennessee (Father born in Virginia, Mother in So. Carolina); wife is Louisa, age 39, born in Tennessee (Father & Mother born in So. Carolina); children are Decatur (12) , Foster (10), Mary C. (8), Virginia (6) - all children are listed as born in Mississippi. I believe this family to be in someway related to the BURTON LITTON BERRY families as descendants of Steven Berry ended up in the same County in Texas (San Patricio Co., Sinton City) as did some of the families of Burton L. Berry. IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFO RELATIVE TO STEVEN (OR STEPHEN) BERRY (father born in VA, Steven born in TN, children born in MS with migration into AR) PLEASE BE SO KIND AS TO CONTACT ME. THANKS! kathicook@msn.com
Gary... Perhaps you could share with me the records on John R. Shelton. I have one of those infamous brick walls with that name engraved upon it. I just do not have time to attend the meetings. I have plans to join this year but I'll have to wait and see. to be a member you only need a connection to the CSA. Here is a link where you can research surnames and units from any state, both armies. Go to CWS&S @ http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/soldiers.htm The messages boards are being moved as soon as they are up again, I'll send you a link. Before you add E. O. Grigsby to your CSA Veterans list, we still need proof that he is the same one who served in the 7th and 9th Miss. I used all my sources and it led me to you, so I am 90% sure we are on the right track. My Purvis kin, I know very little about. James H. Purvis born abt. 1812, place unknown, died unknown, Marion Co. Miss. is as far back as I can get. I have no idea about parents or bothers and sisters. I am going to see if a friend of mine will help you with information. He is writing a book about the 7th Miss. do you mind if I give your email address to him? George Purvis 7th Miss. Yes, you may use the information and my name as a source reference. I am not a member of SCV but would like to have the membership information, as I write a lot of history on the Civil War Veterans of Woodruff County, AR. I did a large column, nine pages in our newspaper last Veterans Day on this subject and others. I did not have Edward O. Grigsby listed as one of the Civil War Vets who are buried in Woodruff County. I will be adding his name to my list after viewing the webb site that you gave me. I noticed that he was listed as Assistant Surgeon between August 1862 through July 1863 in the 9th Mississippi. His name has sparked my interest in him and I will be doing some additional research on him in Woodruff County. I will let you know what else I find. I am going to the Odd Fellows Cemetery today to see where he is buried, to see his headstone and see if it gives any additional information on him indicating his Civil War record. I will also take a digital picture of his headstone and e-mail it to you. Many of my ancestors were from Mississippi, Marshall, Union, Ponotoc, Tippah, and Lee counties, etc. I have many people in my file with the surname Purvis who were from Tennessee and migrated to Mississippi and some on to Texas. I was wondering about your ancestors, and if I might have them in my files? Hope to hear from you soon. Best regards, Gary Telford Family Roots Woodruff County Monitor

I have to say that is more than I expected. Do you object if I use your replies as a source reference? I know some of my heroes (Mississippi) received pensions while others did not. I never fully understood that. Thanks for shedding some light on that subject. Are you a member of the SCV? The reason I ask is if Edward O. Grigsby proves to be a former member of the 7th Miss., and he does not have a headstone, perhaps we could work together to remedy that oversight. I would also like to invite you to our 7th Miss. site so that you may see firsthand what we are doing. We are at: http://www.geocities.com/poboy1961/index.html George

Because the act of secession invalidatated the rights of southern people, the ensuing results of the Civil War left veterans little recourse for financial recovery. Senator Walter Raney's Pension Bill proved to be a magnanimous step toward recognition for many Confederate families, as well as financial relief from the Civil War burdens. "Senator Walter Raney (1887-1966) a native of McCrory, Woodruff Co., AR, was the author, introduced the bill, and secured the enatment into law which paid all of the then 6,000 confederate veterans and widows $50.00 a month pension. He signed the Pension Bill in 1922. He also published and edited the Arkansas Central Leader newspaper from 1927 until 1945. CONFEDERATE----Pensions for Confederate veterans were issued by some former Confederate states, including Tennessee and Texas. Many soldiers, widows, and children received pensions from the government following the war. For soldiers who served the Union, the pensions were paid by the U.S. Government. For soldiers who served the Confederacy, pensions were paid by some of the Confederate states. In addition a son of W. B. and Nettie Miers is also buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, south half. Grigsby and his wife Eliza are both buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, south half. This cemetery is located about 2 1/2 miles south of McCrory, Woodruff Co., AR. I will see what else I can find regarding his Civil War record. Since his death occured on May 17, 1899, he could have not filed for a pension, this would also apply to his wife who died April 18, 1908. I believe the pension fund started in about 1910 (will give you the exact date later). Walter Rainey of McCrory was the arthur of the Civil War Pension.
