    1. [ARWHITE] Brooks, KKK,1867-1870
    2. The list Mom, Kathlen, requested a little activity. My name is Jim S. Brooks and am seeking information on my gggrandfather, C.B. (Cornelius Bradford) Brooks. He was born in South Carolina (Grassy Pond, near Gaffney) in 1834 to Jesse and Anne Phillips Brooks. He was a printer's apprentice to T.J. Eccles in Lincolnton, N.C. from 1844-185l-He was an orphan and apprenticed at 10) He ran away in 1851. Have no idea where to. Shows up in Darlington, South Carolina, as the owner (for a short period) of the Darlington Flag and Family Friend) Business was not too good, he was sued in absentia concerning paper connections) He was living in Livingston, Polk County, Texas at the time. There he started the Argysus and The Rising Sun. The Civil War came and he joined Wauls Texas Legion. Captured and paroled at Vicksburg in 1863. Then became a printer for Confederate Army in Shrevport, La. After the war he moved to Memphis. The steamboat sank in the Mississippi in summer or fall of 1866. (Not Sultana). Wife died of complications and left him with 2 year old son and 4 year old daughter. He ran a newspaper in Memphis called Dailey Review with one B.F.C.Brooks. There were bad race riots in Memphis(1866), many people killed. KKK began formation there and in Pulaski. C.B. moved to Searcy, White County, Arkansas in 1866 or early 1867. In August he married Mary Catherine Mallicoat. A sturdy lady who had plenty of heartache all her life (Will not here elaborate too much). She was a widow of a Tennessee soldier(William Mallicoat). She had three daughters. One married a Jones, one married a Whitley and one married a Gilliam. Ed Jones died young and widow remarried. About the same time C.B. moved to Searcy-so did Jacob Frolich. Frolich started the Weekly Review. I wonder about C.B.,s connection with him, Gov. Clayton was investigating the KKK. A fellow Parker got killed (He was a spy for the Governor) Frolich left town but a deal was struck. He came back, was tried, acquited and later became Sect of State for Arkansas for two terms. He later ran for Treasurer but died in 1890 before the election. In any event C.B. died young at 36 in 1870 in Searcy. I wonder if it was connected to KKK problems. Do not have a clue as to C.B.,s politics. His family, brothers and brothers in law were split-North-South. The main purpose of this note is to find any information for any connection and SPECIFICALLY to see if an extant record exists for Frolich,s trial in 1869 or 1870. KKK was disbanded in Arkansas at this time (Officially at least) and Arkansas was not humiliated as were the other Southern State .In about 1872 many congressional hearings were had in the South and trials over the KKK.These KK problems led to a brief military occupation. Incidentally, James McCallister, from White County helped with much of this information. His assistance was invaluable. Incidentally, Catherine Mallicoate Brooks married Thomas L.Milner in 1879 in Searcy. He was County Coroner for about three terms. They both died about 1899 and had no joint childrenJim S.
