A township is a division of territory in surveys of U.S. public land containing 36 sections or 36 square miles. Townships lines on a survey map are marked off in degrees either North or South from a fixed location and interscted by "Range" lines either East or West from a certain meridian. Example on land records might read somethin like this: N-1/2 of Sec. 30 laying in Range 9 East, Township 13 North. A township can also be an electoral and administrative district of a county in the southern U.S. Hope this helps. James R. Rasco
