Surnames: DAVIS, BURDESHAW Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/wV.2ADI/883 Message Board Post: I'm searching for information about Richard W. DAVIS and his wife Mary Ann BURDESHAW (also spelled Burteishan, Birdeshaw, and Birdshaw). Both born 1831 in Georgia; married 9 Dec. 1849 in Randolph County, GA. Listed on 1850 Census, Randolph County, 7th Dist. p. 389. Moved to Henry County, Alabama, where they are listed on the 1860 Census, Kirkland Beat #4, p. 190, with five children. Around 1875 moved to White County, Ark. Listed there for 1880 Census, Kentucky Township, E.D. 292, p. 193, and 1900 Census, E.D. 140, p. 47. Buried in Old Hopewell Cemetery. Richard W. was a circuit-riding Baptist preacher, supposedly the fourth generation to preach the faith. Mary Ann, according to family lore, was part Indian. Son William Harvey DAVIS moved to Texas, also a preacher. In the 1850 Census, poss. candidates for the parents of R.W. DAVIS are Willey and Timey A. DAVIS; likely candidates for the parents of Mary Ann BURDESHAW are Daniel and Rebecca BURDESHAW. Would like cites to any documents confirming that these were their parents; also information about their more distant ancestors and siblings. R.W.'s father must have been a minister, and his mother was named Permilla according to 1880 Census; thus there is reason to doubt Willey (listed as "farmer") and Timey A. were his parents. Please contact me if you know anything about these DAVIS and BURDESHAW family lines. I'd particularly like to know the cites to any primary sources confirming their ancestry (deeds etc.) so I can order copies. Many thanks for any information you can provide. 3. Hi Theresa The cemetery is on the south side (I think) of the fairgrounds - beside the highway department. There are only two stones standing. I am currently working on obtaining info about this cemetery. It was used for many years. You can look at www.rootsweb.com/~arwhite under cemeteries and find a picture, listing and description that a great volunteer put together. I'll let the list know when I find more info. In a separate matter, the Pioneer Village at the fairgrounds is being relocated. The fair needed the space for expansion and the village needs to be down by August. Don't worry though, it will be put back together again at a nice spot in Searcy around the same time. It will have more space and the area will be nicer. Thanks for your question, Shelly Wyatt Keech for the White County Historical Society ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, January 26, 2002 11:30 AM Subject: [ARWHITE] Fairgrounds Cem. Hi, I am behind in my email but saw the post on the Fairground Cem and wondered if anyone had more info on it? I am wondering if anyone knows how long it was used and where the burial info would be now. Does anyone know exactly where it is at the fairgrounds? I live across from the fairgrounds and never knew it was there. I would like to take my 12 yr daughter over there since now she is very spooked that there are dead people buried across the street:) I think taking flowers over there and showing it to her will ease her fears plus let her learn a little bit about history. Also curious is there a website that has info on the old buildings at the fairgrounds? Does anyone know why they took one of them down a couple of weeks ago? Thanks! I'm sorry it has taken me so long to respond. My email address on the message board is old and I go to the site every few months and check to see if anyone has responded. I have just started researching the Massey family. I don't have a lot of information yet. My grandfather was William T. Massey, of ElPaso. My grandmother is Audean and my mom is Sandra. Do you have any information on your Grandparents? My grandmother said that she really didn't know anything since John Lee died before her and my grandfather got married. She said that he never really talked about it and said that John Lee was an orphan. However, I think that John Lee's parents were William S. Massey and Mary Massey. I found them on 1880 White County Census Records. There are three children listed Mary L. age 5, John L. age 7, and Jesse 8 months. I haven't found out what happened to them. The children I have listed for John Lee and Louella are (I found this information in my Grandparents family bible): Baby Boy Massey - born 1892 Roy - born Feb. 26, 1893; died Apr 18, 1976 Love - born 1894 Evelyn - born Nov 22, 1895 Myrtle - born March 11, 1899 Jim - born Feb 1901; died July 8, 1956 Eugene - born between 1905 & 1908 William Thomas - born May 3 1909; died Apr 2, 1994 Fern- born May 27, 1911 Ruby - born Apr 15, 1914 Glen - born June 15, 1917; died Oct 11, 1971 (I see from you message that your father's birthday was in 1916). Burl - born Nov. 20, 1922 I don't have any information on spouses and children of my grandfather's brothers and sisters. If you have any information, I would love to hear from you.

    3. Since the question about Short in Clay Township has arisen, I'm curious if anyone on the list has any knowledge of brothers John and Bill Short of Clay Township in the early 1900s. My parents bought land on the south bank of Big Creek from these men in the 1930s but by the time I discovered America, they, nor any of their descendants of which I was aware, no longer lived in those parts. Where did the Shorts relocate? Did they have children? John and Bill Short lived on the north side of Big Creek near where Briar Creek empties into it. (Big Creek was a south and sometimes westerly boundary of Clay Township.) My recollection is that their houseplaces were on the Hardcastle land near the gravesite of the child that died from scalding during hog killing and was buried in the yard. (I think this tragedy and gravesite was mentioned on this list a few months back.) And while we're in that vicinity and speaking of isolated graves, does anyone know the identities of about 4 persons who were buried on the bank of Big Creek near State Hwy 16 at the site of the "old" bridge (probably on the old military road)? This site is about 200-300 yards north of the present Big Creek bridge on Hwy 16 and then due west on the near side of the creek. If any gravestones were ever there, they were probably washed away long ago in floods. My recollection of the legend about those graves was that some travelers were camped there, unable to cross the creek and proceed on their journey due to high water, and when these deaths occurred, the people were buried there on the creek bank. I don't know when that old bridge was constructed but these deaths could have occurred even before the bridge was built when there was only a ford across the creek there. My GrGrandfather John Smith homesteaded the land where the graves are located. And speaking of John Smith, he was the one-armed lawman (Constable?) who rode his mule to Clay and arrested the man who had drowned his wife in their dug well. (He threw her in the well and held her under the water with a fence rail.) John Smith put this man on his mule at Clay, brought him to his home, probably just a few hundred yards north of the above mentioned gravesites on Big Creek, gave him a bed for the night, took turns with Mrs. Smith guarding him with a shotgun throughout the night, gave him his breakfast the next morning, put him back on his mule, and took him into Searcy, where he was hanged from a tree on the courthouse square after being found guilty. (Most everyone in this area recalls this notorious story. I think Mrs. C. Presley wrote an account of this a few years back.) Looking forward to any input on these questions and legends, Wendell

A new cemetery search feature will be added soon as it works for some of us but not all. No sense in having one that does not work. If you have requested a census lookup in White County, bear with me, these take a while.
