    1. [ARWHITE] Smith/Smyth/Belle/Wells late 1800's early 1900's Look up would be appreciated

    3. I am trying to hunt down my paternal grandmother's family. I wasn't raised by my father and my grandmother passed in 1980 (I was born in 1961)and when quizzed I discovered my grandmother left very little clues and they are all informationally challenged. What little information I have is from my paternal grandmother's application for social security benefits, her death certificate, the 1910 soundex index for white county which has an ed mistake in it, and family rumor. Not to mention her last name was Smith--oh joy and all of the troubles for researching that brings up. My grandmother was Francis Louise/Lousia (depending on what document you are looking at) Smith born in 1905 in Arkansas. She was rumored to have to use the 1910 census taken in June 1910 along with her family Bible to be able to get her social security since her birth predates birth certificates in Arkansas. On her social security application, she lists in her own handwriting her father as Amaziah Smyth and her mother as Jeannie Belle Wells and says she didn't know where in Arksans she was born. She spells her maiden name as Smith even though she spelled her father's name as Smyth. She is rumored to have to lived in the Arkansas back woods and worked as a telephone operator when she got older. She married Samuel Andrew Cline in the 1920's and had four children: Patricia, Buddy (H.H.), Barbara and James E. She died in 1980 in Florida. I knew she had a sister and a brother but not much more. Her death certificate states her mother's name was Jeannie Belle (not Jeannie Belle Wells) and her place of birth as Blytheville. I searched the soundex and the only Amaziah Smith I came up with was in White County in ED district 167 and when I cross referenced to the census for that year there was no ED district 167 for White County. However, the soundex lists Amaziah Smith age 43 born in Illinois head of household, Guannie B. age 28 born in Tennessee wife, Willis age 9 son born in Arkansas, Ova B. age 6 daughter born in Arkansas, Francis age 4 born in Arkansas daughter, Lillian born in Arkansas. I think this is my paternal grandmother's family. No my family has absolutely nothing for me to get a lead on. No, I found nothing in Blytheville. This is closest match. Any leads on any of the names would be greatly appreciated. I didn't find them yet in 1920 or in 1900 so I don't know. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

My Grandfather lived several years with them before he passed away in the Eighties. My Grandmother lived in a nursing home for many years after that and passed away in 1993 at the ripe old age of 95 I believe. My Father has also passed away in 1992. I do not know very much about their history prior to this time frame. They did live somewhere around Pangburn, AR, this much I do know but beyond that, I am in the dark. 1. Re: [ARWHITE] Shorts near Short, Ark.
    2. I for one am very thankful for your post. I often felt that I would never see anything on my family. <<<.I erroneously referred to "brothers John and Bill Short". The information in these land abstracts do not lead one to conclude that they were brothers. Their kindred relationship, if any, is now unknown to me.>>>>> Actually think that they are brothers. According to 1860 Lafayette Co AR census for gg-parents, BB & Almentin Short, minor children are Wm F, John R, Robert H, Joseph B and James F( my line). Then 1870 A. Short shows up in White Co Clay Township, with same children, William is missing tho, I am sure because of age. <<<<<In a dispute over rents that John W. Short rec'd and failed to share with co-heirs Edna Tate and Frank Baker>>>> According to Book C p230-231 July 18 1910, E. M Short appointed J. W. Short sole heir and appointed guardian of gr-children, Joseph Franklin Baker and Edna Tate. (unfortunately did not get copy of complete info when there) Have wondered relationship of Isaiah Hardcastle age 2 with parents, was a boarder in home of Almontine Short in 1880 Clay Township census. <<<<[Although not stated explicitly, I conclude that Emma M. Short was the widow of Joseph B. Short, since no record of conveyance exists in the the land abstract.>>>>>> According to White Co marriage records. J. B. 2. Wendell Wyatt
    3. Since my last post on this list I did some research on the Shorts in some land abstracts, found some of my "knowledge" flawed, and answered some of my questions about the Shorts which I will share with the list. I apologize for the length of this posting, but am hopeful that someone will make a connection with a lost family member among the names. Many family names will be recognized by those familiar with this area between Clay and Big Creek. In an earlier post to this list, I erroneously referred to "brothers John and Bill Short". The information in these land abstracts do not lead one to conclude that they were brothers. Their kindred relationship, if any, is now unknown to me. I also learned that my parents did not buy land from these men, although they referred to the parcels as "the Bill Short land" and "the John Short land". Hmmm..., interesting how repeated references lead to erroneous impressions! However, both John Short and Bill Short owned land in Section 31 of Twp 9N Range 7W and at least one of them lived in the north half of that section. Bill Leach informed me that the Short PO was in section 34, so the Short PO was approx 3 miles east of where the Shorts lived and where John Short operated a blacksmith shop. I do not know if there is any connection between these Short families and the Short PO. The land abstracts list these owners of land in the south half of Section 31 of Twp 9N Range 7W. Military Bounty Warrant USA to Samuel Lynch, father & heir of Robert Lynch, dec'd.. 1849 Samuel Lynch (single) to Presley D. Tharp, 1856 Presley D. Tharp & wife to Hiram C. Baker, 1859; Jobe Siddall, mortgagee Hiram C. Baker & wife, Mary Baker to J. W. McKay, 1860 E. H. McKay (single) to Joseph B. Short, 1887 (inconsistent McKay initials) St. Louis, Iron Mtn & Southern Ry Co. to Manual Teer, 1888; Manual Teer (widower) to Joseph Short, 1894 John W. Short (single) heired land from father, 1914 (signed his name with an X) conveyed to L. D. Davis, E. M. Bennett, P. E. Bennett, & R. L. Bennett, 1931 E. M. Bennett and wife, Tessie Bennett to my parents, 1946 Included in this land abstract is the last will and testament of Mary B. Tate, deceased (Will record "C", pg. 61, 4 Oct 1901). Mary B. Tate was the daughter of Emma M. Short. Mary B. Tate had minor children, Jasper, Frank Baker, and Edna Tate. Witnesses: J. P. Findley & S. L. Golithan W. D. Tate became the guardian of Edna Tate. W. D. Davenport became the guardian of Frank Baker. In a dispute over rents that John W. Short rec'd and failed to share with co-heirs Edna Tate and Frank Baker, the following gave testimony: J. F. Wise, Travis Barber, Isaiah Hardcastle, Mrs. Beck. Commissioners appointed by the court: A. J. Spears, W. P. Howell and W. M. Howell [Although not stated explicitly, I conclude that Emma M. Short was the widow of Joseph B. Short, since no record of conveyance exists in the the land abstract. "Mrs. Beck", listed above, could be the same as a Bertha Beck noted in another document.] In another land abstract, St. Louis, Iron Mtn & Southern Ry Co. to R. H. Short, 1888; In an Affidavit dated 31 Jan 1931, it is stated that R. H. Short died in White Co. AR more than 20 yrs ago, leaving survivors A. E. Short, his widow and children, J. Ed Short, W. J. Short, Ida King, and C. Ola Hill Kate L. Short is listed as the wife of W. J. Short Later owners of lands in this section are listed as: Fannie H. (Gardner) Gulley and sons Albert Lewis Gardner & Willy Wimbish Gardner. Mrs. Fannie H. Gardner died on 7-5-1924 in Tunica Co., Miss. Daughters: Mrs. Minnie L. Roycroft, Mrs. Linnie Leigh LaRue Grandson: Edwin Gardner, a "cripple" Granddaughters: Mrs. Lucy Wimbish Myerhoff; Fannie Bell Gardner, dau. of Albert

    1. [ARWHITE] Wills in White Co.
    2. Mary Henderson
    3. Hi! I have an ancestor who died in White Co. and I'd like to determine if she left a will. Her name is Jincy KILLMAN. I have conflicting dates of death - but she either died July 13, 1872 or July 13, 1877. And it may have been the 18th of July that she died. I think she's buried in Fredonia Cemetery. I'd love to find a will for her, but would a female typically have a will during that time period? I may be misguided in this notion, but for some reason I don't think of women as having wills at that time. She looks to have been living with a son in 1860, and a daughter in 1870, so she may not have had much of an estate, but that's just another assumption I'm making. Anyone have any thoughts? And, also, does anyone have access to a will index for that time frame that could tell me if there is a will for her? (I'd be interested in any KILLMAN/KILMANs that show up, if there is an index.) Thanks very much!!! Mary __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Great stuff seeking new owners in Yahoo! Auctions! http://auctions.yahoo.com

    3. Hi, I just want to thank everyone helping me out on info on the fairground cem. Did the fairground know they were using part of a cemetery for their parkinglot? It is just hard to believe that the county(?) built over a cemetery unless they didn't realize it was there. Maybe during the next fair they can use some of the money for a small memorial in honor of those buried there. The whole thing seems so sad. I suppose even sadder since it was a pauper's cem. Thanks again, Theresa
