The two oldest church buildings in the county are Smyrna Methodist ( circa 1857 -located on hwy 36 between Searcy and Center Hill) and First Methodist in Searcy (sanctuary built in 1871-2 - located at Main and Market in Searcy) The oldest school building is the 1885 Little Red School - located at the White County fairgrounds - the building will be moved to a new location this summer. The oldest bridge is located at the south end of Judsonia and crosses the Little Red River - called the Judsonia bridge. It was built around WW I. We also have the oldest functioning courthouse in the state (1871-2) located on the court square in Searcy. All are on the National Register, except for the Little Red Schoolhouse (named for the community it was moved from, not it's color which is white) ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, March 14, 2002 5:48 PM Subject: [ARWHITE] Old Churches, Schools & Bridges > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wV.2ADI/913 > > Message Board Post: > > Could anyone tell me the names and general location of any old churches, schools, and bridges that still exist in White County? > Thanks > > > ==== ARWHITE Mailing List ==== > Checkout the other lists being watched over by your List Mom; > http://mailing_lists.homestead.com/lists.html > To learn more about my world visit http://dwp.bigplanet.com/kburnett > Arkansas Cemeteries Volunteer Website http://www.rootsweb.com/~arcemete/arcem.htm > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >
On the White Co. website listed under the link, Residents of White County, listed in Prairie Co., Ar. Marriages Records, there is a listing for a couple and they were married by James M. King, JP in the year 1856. My question is this: Would anyone have any knowledge of who this James M. King, JP would be? Judy Sanders

William L. Varner age 20 married Julia Holiman age 19 on Sept. 14, 1890. Both were of White County. L. A. McMahan, J. P. performed the ceremony. J. H. Cook signed as security, O. S. George was County Clerk, W. G. Caldwell was Deputy Clerk. License located in Book I page 312, but in the older books they won't do a photo copy due to the condition of the books. I think you can order a copy from the archives in Little Rock, but I don't know what the address is. If you should care for the address, let me know and I will get it from the courthouse. There are several Varner names for Brides and Grooms, but I didn't find Doris Elton Varner. There was a F. L. Varner who married Ina Sweeten in 1922. I think he was from Beebe, White County, Arkansas. There were some of the others who may have married here, but it would help to know the bride's and husband's names. Also, do you know if they are mostly from Kensett and West Point area? Kensett and West Point are in the same general location. Transportation wasn't as streamlined then as now, so chances are they sorta stayed close to home to marry and settle down. Let me know if you have some more info on the others.
