I have a land deed for William Carver dated 1821 in the Territory of Arkansas. I charted it out and it was in Judsonia Ark. Township. So can someone help me figure out how to obtain more infomation on this? I understand that White County was not formed until later. My Grandfather was bn Judsonia in 1878 and I would asume that this William was his Grandfather maybe? I also found a land transfer from William Carver to Isaac Carver, it states he is William Carver's brother. That the said land is to be share with brother and other hiers. Are there any Isaac, or William Carver Families looking for Family conections In this area also? Thank You so much, Carolyn in Spokane, WA
Dear Mary Ann: There was little or no mental health care available in White County during the 1930s and 1940s. The only facility was called "The Poor Farm." The intent was for the homeless but it basically was a place for people with mental problems-usually those born with mental retardation. It was located east of Searcy on what I think is now the White County Fair Grounds. My uncle lived across the old highway that ran between Searcy and Judsonia and crossed the Little Red River about 2 or 3 miles further to the east. Arkansas operated a large State Hospital with many buildings in Little Rock as well as Benton. I remember visiting this facility on several occasions because my Dad's older brother had a stroke in 1945 and after the family could not care for him at home he spent most of the next three years in the hospital in Little Rock where he died in 1948. It was not a "pretty sight." There was little hope for improvement and the care was pitiful! Hope this helps. If you want to, you may write to me. Sincerely, Milton Davis May I grew up in Rose Bud and graduated from Rose Bud High School in 1949 and from the University of Arkansas School of Pharmacy in 1953. I have lived out of state most of the time since then. I now live in the St. Louis, MO area.
Could someone tell where someone would go (back in the 30-40's) for mental help in White County. And where can you find arrest reports for that era, in that area? Mary Ann Ralston
This message is kind of related to both the present roll call and to the township messages. I have a connection with at least one DYSON family that was in Marshall Township around 1860. The one DYSON to whom I know a definite connection migrated to White Co. from Marshall Co., KY. I note that there is also a Kentucky Township near (I think) Marshall Township. I also note that some of the surnames I notice on records during that time period are surnames I have seen or have a connection with in the general area of Marshall Co., KY. Knowing that a good deal of folks migrated from the western part of both TN and KY, I am wondering if Kentucky and Marshall Townships were originally populated by folks from those areas and if that is why they are so named. Anyone have any information on this? Thanks, Gary

A township is a division of territory in surveys of U.S. public land containing 36 sections or 36 square miles. Townships lines on a survey map are marked off in degrees either North or South from a fixed location and interscted by "Range" lines either East or West from a certain meridian. Example on land records might read somethin like this: N-1/2 of Sec. 30 laying in Range 9 East, Township 13 North. A township can also be an electoral and administrative district of a county in the southern U.S. Hope this helps. James R. Rasco

Kay, I have a Herbert Holleman, born 25 September 1902 in White County, who married Norah Elizabeth Murdaugh. They had at least 2 children. Both died in Tulare County, California. Is Herbert a member of your Holleman family? I would like to find Herbert and Norah's family. Michael Barton
Marla, I am very interested in contacting you about the J. Kelly you mentioned. He was Johnithan Kelly, born abt. 1820 in TN (I did not know where), died 17 June 1866 in White County. I knew he married a Catharine ?(Now I know Hughes) and they had at least 9 children, including my gr-gr-grandmother Sara Elizabeth Kelly who married David Barton. I have alot of information to exchange on these families. Please contact me at [email protected] Michael Barton
I have seen a number of posts mentioning townships. Could someone please explain how these townships work? In Texas, we have city/town - county - state. There are no townships that I am aware of. I had thought that township was just another word for town, but recently I read that there were several towns in a township which is in White County. I don't understand.
Michael, I may be mistaken, but I think he is one of the children of Henry Thomas and Pairlee Mintora Lassiter. I do not have the information recorded in my new computer file at this time, but if this is his parents, then yes, he is kin to my Holleman's. My Henry and Elizabeth would be his great grandparents. That line is: Henry Holleman and Elizabeth Cotton > Andrew Jackson Holleman and Cassie Duncan > Henry Thomas Holleman and Pairlee Mintora Lassiter > Herbert Holleman I have information on the Cotton family, if this proves to be your line. And by the way, my brother's middle name is Barton. It was also my Uncle's middle name, and we do not know where it is from. (The uncle was born in White Co, in 1907,) Kay
I show no Kelley who married a Hughes in Warren or White Counties.
