This cemetery was listed for the first time in December 2001 by Leroy Blair of the White County Historical Society. Another Society member, Sam Holloway of El Paso, had told him of this site. Blair prepared the following directions to reach it: From Antioch, take Jim Corbitt Road about 1.2 miles to Louie Pruitt Road. Turn right and go about 2.2 miles to Walker Lane. Turn left and go .2 [two-tenths] mile to Bull Creek Cove Road. Take this road about .4 [four-tenths] mile to Cemetery Ridge Road and turn left. The cemetery is in the woods on the right, about 200 yards from the road. It is in very bad condition. Blair found some 30 to 40 depressions that are probably unmarked graves. Only three stones were discovered. I talked to a Mr. Riley who lives near the cemetery, Blair reported, and he said at one time there were several stones but they were destroyed by vandals. Blanche Belew Hicks, 89, who grew up at Antioch, told a Society member that she remembered the cemetery but did not know a name for it. She said her Uncle Ray Belew farmed near the cemetery and that there was once a Methodist church and a school, Maple Springs, nearby. She said her brothers used to find lots of arrowheads near the creek. Shortly after Blair discovered the cemetery, the news reached Frank PRICE of Searcy and his brother Coy of Beebe, who visited the gravesite of their great grandfather Russell PRICE for the first time. Coy PRICEs son Mickey of the Little Rock Air Force Base accompanied them. I was thrilled to learn about this cemetery, Frank PRICE said. The Russell PRICE buried here is my great grandfather. I have been searching for Grandpa Russells grave for years. Russell was born in 1821 in Spartanburg, SC. He was the son of Frederick PRICE and Delia (Richards) PRICE, who are buried in Weir Cemetery. They arrived in White County about 1835. If you have corrections or additional information on this cemetery or the three people listed, contact the White County Historical Society, P.O. Box 537, Searcy, AR 72145. PRICE, Russell died February 8, 1878 age 57 years stone is broken Bearden, Charles T. August 31, 1862 March 1, 1870 son of J.W. and J. Bearden B.E.B. no dates or other information initials on a foot stone the head stone is missing Best wishes, Ed Hello. Thank you for telling me that. My folks were at Floyd at one time. I know that as my grandfather was born there. What I am actually interested in is the burial places of my great great grandmother Mary-called Polly-- PRICE and my great great grandparents, Pleas and Jane Loyd the daughter and son-in-law of Polly PRICE. All of this was 140 years ago for the couple and probably a 100 for the Polly as she outlived the younger ones. Thanks for the reply. ------------------------- Weir Cemetery Searcy, Arkansas Updated December 31, 2002 This cemetery is located about 10 miles south of Searcy on Highway 267, in Section 10, Township 6 North, Range 8 West. Comprehensive records on burials here were prepared October 13, 1976, by Linda Rowe and Cloie Presley of the White County Historical Society and published in the 1987 White County Heritage. The cemetery records were updated March 24, 2000, by Tommy H. Treadway of the Historical Society and alphabetized at that time for convenience. Rowe and Presley listed graves that Treadway could not find in his visit to the cemetery but they were added to his list. Similarly, when an earlier survey was made of the cemetery in 1963 by Historical Society volunteers Mrs. Lloyd Henry and her son Lloyd Jr., graves were listed which Rowe and Presley could not find. But these names remain in the list. What has happened to the markers that were in the earlier reports is unknown. As the 1976 report points out, They may have been carved rocks, funeral home markers or even old tombstones now broken and gone. Many of the ones I listed are badly damaged. It is interesting to note that this cemetery is the final resting place of Delia PRICE, who died July 6, 1840. This is believed to be the oldest marked grave that has been listed in White County. Her age was listed as 79 years in an early survey, and repeated many times since. This would have made her 21 years older than her husband Frederick PRICE. At the request of the White County Historical Society, volunteer Leroy Blair inspected Delia PRICEs tombstone again on July 28, 2002. He found that it was broken into two pieces, and the fracture ran through the portion containing her age. After careful scrutiny, Blair reported that the stone listed her age as 39 years and 5 months On that same day, in an old section of the cemetery, Blair made a startling discovery. Several grave sites had been cleaned by a Weedeater the previous day, uncovering an old native stone which had Steve L. inscribed on it, with a birthdate of April 22, 1775, and death date of October 31, 1795. Blair reported the name and dates were very clear and easy to read. Historical Society officials are investigating this puzzling find. Blair and his wife Ellen had visited the cemetery May 18 and May 21, 2001, and again in late 2002 and updated the listings. Jennie Morris Green Lawrence Michigan ---------------------------------- My question for you is this, Was this Thomas PRICE the brother of Fielding PRICE and Frederick PRICE? Linda Acrey Lonoke, Arkansas great great great grandchild of Polly and Fielding PRICE great great grandchild of Mineriva Jane PRICE who married Pleas Loyd in 1854 and great grandchild of Mary Ann Loyd who was under the guardianship of Fielding and Polly PRICE Subject: Thomas PRICE There was a Confederate soldier from White County named Thomas PRICE, but he didn't die young. This Thomas PRICE enlisted in Co. E, 7th Battalion Arkansas Infantry, at Pocahontas, Arkansas, on November 16, 1861. The 7th Battalion was consolidated with the 8th Regiment, and Thomas PRICE was transferred to (new) Co. K, 8th Arkansas Infantry, on May 7, 1862. He was captured at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, on September 19, 1863, and was received at the Federal military prison at Camp Douglas, Illinois, on October 7, 1863. He was held there until the end of the war, and was released on June 14, 1865. He applied for a Confederate pension from White County in 1901. He died on September 23, 1908, and his widow Susan E. PRICE applied for a Confederate pension in 1909. The pension file number is 14156. You can order a copy of the pension record from either the Butler Center or the Arkansas History Commission. You'll need the pension number I cited earlier. Since this Thomas PRICE enlisted in White County, seems to have lived there most of his life, and died there, he should have left plenty of footprints there. You might take a look at the White County USGenWeb page to see if he shows up in the census, marriage and cemetery records. If you should connect with this Thomas PRICE, please let me know so I can update my Arkansas Confederate soldier database. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Gamage - Sartin Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/wV.2ADI/1468 Message Board Post: When my gggrandparents arrived here in 1880s from England, they settled in Judsonia and worked a farm between Judsonia and Kenset. Deodatus Richard C. Gamage died about 1882 or 1883 and is buried in Judsonia. There is probably no marker unless one of his children put it on later after they were well established in their careers. Also, his youngest son "Baby" Jim was born and died in Judsonia after his father's death. 1883 - 1885? I understand that Elizabeth Rogers Gamage married James Sartin, an English man, who was a tanner in Jusonia. They later separated and maybe divorced. Can anyone tell me if there were any children born to Elizabeth and Sartin?
