The Arkansas chapter of the Trail of Tears Association will meet Saturday, October 25, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in downtown Springdale. The meeting will focus on the Trail of Tears route through Northwest Arkansas. In 1839, some 12,000 Cherokees traveled through Northwest Arkansas on the so-called "Northern" and "Benge" routes, according to Kitty Sloan of Paragould, president of the Arkansas chapter of the Trail of Tears Association. Speakers at the meeting include Dr. Ann Early, state archeologist with the Arkansas Archeological Survey, who will discuss "Indian Removal and Arkansas Archeology," and Kirby Sanders of the Heritage Trail Partners, who will discuss the work of that group to document historic trails in Northwest Arkansas. The meeting is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Arkansas chapter of the Trail of Tears Association, 1-800-441-4513.
