Hi Carolyn! I suppose you know that Lewis Evans compiled the first census taken in Washington County, Arkansas in 1829. To quote the first two paragraphs from an article in Flashback, the quarterly published by the Washington County Historical Society: "Because of the demand for the lists of names in the early censuses of Washington County, Arkansas, the Washington County Historical Society is publishing the names of heads of families as given in the Sheriff's Census of 1829 and the Federal censuses of 1830, 1840, and 185O. "The 1829 census was compiled by Lewis Evans, the county sheriff. Evans was a store-keeper at or near what is now Evansville, in the extreme southwestern corner of Washington County, almost on the Indian Territory line. It is doubtful if the sheriff was able to list all of the early settlers, although he covered the Cane Hill-Vineyard area thoroughly. It can be supposed that he visited the new county seat of Fayetteville at least once or twice between October 1828 and October 1829 - 40 miles on horseback. But it is doubtful if he was able to learn and record all of the early settlers in the northern and eastern parts of the county. The record shows the omission of some family names known to have been in the area in the summer of 1829." For what it's worth, John Latta was not listed in Sheriff Evans' 1829 census. -- Robert W. Both served as post master during this time and Evansville was named after Evans. Lewis was a licensed Indian Trader and also sheriff. Carolyn Kent
