My ggg grandfather, who was in the 1840 census in Vineyard County, would show up as being from Kentucky. Actually, he was born there before it was a state. However, he was married in Indiana, was in the 1830 census in Saline County, MO, went to Greene County, MO, probably before it was a county. He shows up there in 1833, just after it became a county. In 1850, he was in Dade County, MO. He died in 1860. He is in the mortality index for Scott County, AR, for 1860. All census records show his birth state as Kentucky, which is correct. But he really spent most of his life in Missouri and Arkansas. So look in other states. Particularly Missouri. You never know. These guys were pioneers, and they traveled. Another ggg grandfather, born 1804 in Beaufort Co, NC, wound up with land grants in Calloway Co., MO, lived in Lawrence Co., MO, and died in Greene Co., MO. Also, if you haven't done this already, check the land grants site. Does anyone know if some of the early families appearing on the 1830 and 1840 census of Vineyard Township may have come together to the area from someplace in TN? The Samuel Lewis and wife Bricey who was a settler there came from TN according to most Census records although one has him from NC. We have been unable to find any record of them in TN or NC. Any help is appreciated. Greig Lewis
