Hi, Would anyone be willing to tape that TV show about Arkansas Post and the measuring, etc. for me?.... It has content in a number of areas, especially the visuals that sound perfect for the historical research I'm doing. Since John Tennant, of WA county, my subject, descended from a grandfather who was one of the earliest people in Arkansas Post and his part-Quapaw wife... this could be an important reference for me. I am happy to pay for tape, time and postage if anyone could do that. I have no other way to access it. Sincerely, Candace Wellman Bellingham, Washington
Hi folks; It is in the beginning stages but I wanted to announce that the Northwest Arkansas Genealogical Society is now online at the following URL; http://www.rootsweb.com/~arnwags/ The NAGS serves the Arkansas Counties of Washington, Carroll, Madison and Benton, but their publication, The Backtracker, includes information from many Arkansas Counties to the NW. Be sure and visit often as we are going to be adding data as time permits. And special thanks to all of the officers and members that made it possible! Tami P. This wasn't to me, Robert, but it answered the message I just sent also. Thank you so much for the information. You are ALWAYS so helpful. I too am very anxious to have a copy. I do hope there is someone in the area where it is shown that is willing to make copies that we can purchase. Diane Taylor Northern California > I am happy to pay for tape, time and postage if anyone could do that. > I have > no other way to access it.
Hi Folks! The Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) is broadcasting the program "It Started Here" tomorrow night, Monday, 26 May 2003 at nine-thirty in the evening and again on Friday, 30 May at six-thirty in the evening.. It is about the establishment of the basis for land surveying in the Louisiana Purchase which is still used today. If you own land, the deed to your property at nearly any location west of the Mississippi describes the location of your land (and that of your ancestors for the past two centuries) with respect to the lines these early surveyors established. We've discussed this topic several times before in the past, but this is a good opportunity to learn more about the subject. I'll be watching - will you? >From AETN's web site: "It Started Here: Early Arkansas and Louisiana Purchase, chronicles the people and land of Arkansas, between the signing of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, leading up to Arkansas statehood in 1836. The 30 minute documentary, written and produced by acclaimed filmmaker Larry Foley, tells the story of the 1815 land survey that began in a swamp in eastern Arkansas, establishing a starting point for land surveys of Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and the Dakotas. A monument erected in 1926 by the Daughters of the American Revolution, recognizes what has become an obscure footnote in American history. The historical state park is off the beaten path, and like the story it honors, is not well known. "You have to have a starting point, and that's what is critical about that spot over there in the middle of that swamp," said UALR history professor Charles Bolton. "And having established that point, you could go on and continue the survey for the rest of the country." The land survey was commissioned by President James Madison. The War of 1812 had been won, and a grateful, yet financially strapped American government, had promised its soldiers property in the new territory. Thanks to the Louisiana Purchase, the young nation had plenty of land to give away. But except for the area that became the state of Louisiana, none of it had been surveyed, and until it was marked off, could not be awarded as bounty to the war veterans. Two federally deputized land surveyors, Joseph Brown and "Prospect" Robbins, were hired to establish the initial point. They hacked their way through thickets and briars, fending off cottonmouth snakes and mosquitoes. They laid out four townships, cutting blaze marks into trees, where the historical monument now stands. "The reason they came together at that place is an accident of geography," aid Ann Early, Arkansas State Archaeologist." "You needed a datum point, a starting point for the surveys, and the two most fundamental landmarks that you could find were mouths of the Arkansas and St. Francis Rivers." The documentary also tells the story of the land ripped apart by the New Madrid earthquake in 1811, four years before the survey. It tells of the 1817 founding of Fort Smith, a small log and stone stockade built by soldiers to keep peace between the warring Cherokee and Osage Indians. The film features the story of Arkansas Post, the oldest frontier trade center west of the Mississippi River. The post was a melting pot settlement that became the territorial capitol in 1819. Also featured in the saga of the Quapaw Indians (Arkansea), who were forced from their native homeland in 1835, one year before statehood Larry Foley Associate Professor Lemke Dept. of Journalism University of Arkansas 479-575-6307 This program was produced in cooperation with the Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial Committee of Arkansas. There is a G. W. BATES in the census for Washington Co in 1870.( the index says G. H. but I have looked at the film and am convinced that it is G. W. ) He is listed as 33 years old, born in KY with wife M. A. (age 22 b. AR) and dau W. A. (age 1 month b. AR). I am pretty sure this is the same as George W. Bates who is in Lincoln Co in 1880 (age f52 b. KY) with wife Martha (age 32 b. AR) and children, Willie ( F age 10 b. AR), Robert ( M age 8 b. AR), John ( M age 5 b. AR) and George ( M age 2 b. AR). There is an age discrepancy but we all know that is common. Does anyone have a connection to this family or know any thing else about them? I need to know where they were in 1860, her maiden name, marriage date, etc. Any hint whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. Frances

It eliminates trivial errors in spelling etc. Just take the mouse and "Wipe the address--while holding down the left mouse button". It should hightlight the address. then click on EDIT COPY Place your mouse cursor in the window for the email address and CLICK. It should stay there. then Click on EDIT PASTE and it should appear there. then click on GO or hit the ENTER KEY and it should happen. Particularly useful for long and complicated addresses and hard to read items like 1 l i I and m or rn. I defy anyone to tell the difference in capital i and a lower case L (I l ) It looks the same on my computer . The rn looks a lot like m, as well. if you use AOL 8.0 you can paste it into an Email body by the same method and it will create an automatic hyperlink. This lets the reader simply click on the address and it should work that way.
