I am not a descendent. I am a researcher and am working with others of the Trail of Tears Assoc to locate and document the Trail of Tears. Our chapter is the Arkansas Chapter and we are working mostly in AR. The AR Heritage Dept has gotten 3 sites to date nominated to the National Register and is working on the documentation for several more. Carolyn Kent
Carol, I am looking for Caroline (or Carolyn) Victoria ARNETT who left MO and went to either Boone or Washington Co., AR in 1880s. Do not know her married surname. Flora Arnett Roe [email protected]
Good Morning All, I am looking for my ggg grandfather Jesse NEAL. He shows up in the 1860 Census in Fayetteville Cove Creek Twp, then died in 1861 But the info I got (somewhere) said he died in 1861, buried where I don't know. I am assuming it is somewhere in Fayetteville. His first wife was Elizabeth Bilyeu, b: bat 1813-1819, d: ?. I have no exact date but she doesn't show up on the 1840 Census. I am wondering if she didn't also die in Fayetteville too. He owned 40 acres of land there. There were four children to this union. After she died he then married Narcissi Jane Atkinson, May 29, 1845, having an additional 7 children with Narcisa. I can find Jesse in several Census' but not where he died and is buried. Is there anyone out there that can help me locate what Cemetery and where his grave? IF you find Elizabeth or Narcisa ( think she was refered to as Jane) Please contact me at: [email protected] ANY help will be appreciated. God Bless Kat [email protected]
Carol, Both of those men were very well known. There are articles in the Flashback I think, about the Lattas and if I'm not mistaken, the house is still there. As for Evans, he led the first wagon train over the Cherokee Trail. 2 professors here in WA State are the experts on that train and the trail, and have published 2 books on it. They spent several years tracking down where Evans is buried. I have corresponded with them, and I have the books. If you are a descendant, I think they would want to correspond with you. I think they've been looking for descendants without success. Candace Wellman Bellingham, WA
Hi Carolyn! I suppose you know that Lewis Evans compiled the first census taken in Washington County, Arkansas in 1829. To quote the first two paragraphs from an article in Flashback, the quarterly published by the Washington County Historical Society: "Because of the demand for the lists of names in the early censuses of Washington County, Arkansas, the Washington County Historical Society is publishing the names of heads of families as given in the Sheriff's Census of 1829 and the Federal censuses of 1830, 1840, and 185O. "The 1829 census was compiled by Lewis Evans, the county sheriff. Evans was a store-keeper at or near what is now Evansville, in the extreme southwestern corner of Washington County, almost on the Indian Territory line. It is doubtful if the sheriff was able to list all of the early settlers, although he covered the Cane Hill-Vineyard area thoroughly. It can be supposed that he visited the new county seat of Fayetteville at least once or twice between October 1828 and October 1829 - 40 miles on horseback. But it is doubtful if he was able to learn and record all of the early settlers in the northern and eastern parts of the county. The record shows the omission of some family names known to have been in the area in the summer of 1829." For what it's worth, John Latta was not listed in Sheriff Evans' 1829 census. -- Robert W. James and Nancy (Halloway) Riggins I am not sure of there death dates, but I know that it was after 1850 because they are listed in the Washington County census. George D. and Mary (Cornwell) Riggins George died in camp durng the civil war (1863). Mary died before 1870. Again thank you for your time. [email protected]
Members and contributors of the Franklin County ([email protected]) claim the James boys had cousins who lived in that county and were occasionally visited by the gang. Fayetteville is a short distance by horseback from the Old Pig Trail that passes through Turner's Bend and Cass into Franklin County. The Turner family was once visited by the James gang who stayed the night and gave them a $20 gold piece for their courtesy. If you are getting the message "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail" you should be able to fix it by doing the following: In Outlook Express - Go to tools -> Options -> Security Uncheck the option that says: "Do not allow attatchments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus." I had this problem after upgrading to Windows XP. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dorothy" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, September 30, 2003 6:08 AM Subject: [ARWASHIN] Re: ARWASHIN-D Digest V03 #85 > This is the 2nd message from this address that I can't open due to a virus > or something.
